It should. The box connects to your NY cable box- the only caveat here is that your son will be controlling the NY cable box- he will be accessing what is being played on it- and can control it. It is a perfect set up if you can connect the Slingbox to an optimum box that is not watched when he is away. If it's attached to your ONLY cable box then he will see only what you are playing- OR he will be changing the channels you see on your TV.

As long as you are subscribed to the channel on your home box, the Sling will send it. In NY (HOME), you will hookup the Sling device to a cable box and in OH or anywhere else, the laptop or tablet will need the Sling player software. On the software, you put in the email and password that you set the Sling up with and it will connect and stream the channels.
