“Can I use this to turn off my lights while I am away from home? Also, do I get the starter kit and then multiple bulbs or do I need to get a box thing for each room? Thanks so much”

Yes, you can control lights from outside your home using the Google Home app on your phone. Technically, you only need the bulbs, if you already have a google home in your house. It's just easier if you have multiple minis around your home since you can call out from anywhere.

You don't need this starter kit per room unless you want multiple Google Home minis throughout your home (I have several) but obviously the number of smart bulbs (should you want them) will outweigh the number of Google Home minis you need. In other words, one Google Home mini could control all of the smart bulbs you have in your house. You would just need to be within earshot of that one mini when asking Google to turn lights on and off. For me, I keep one Google Home on each floor of my house

The system is also compatible with any number of other smart lighting products from Lutron, Phillips, or LiFX, so you can really build it out however you want.

Also, any CbyGE bulb can be connect to any Google Home device...so you only need to buy additional bulbs, no additional bundles (unless of course you want more Google Home Minis!).

You can get multiple lights and only have base like the mini, but multiple devices are useful around the house I have one in my kitchen/living room and one in my bedroom. You don't even need a base item as long as you have google home on a compatible cell phone or tablet to control the lights. The base devices just make things easier and more hands free. Hey google turn on/off which ever light. I use mine for an alarm clock as well as a kitchen timer. Multiple devices can work as an intercom system. I think you have to have something extra to use it outside of the house.
