In the past, I had an above average 5.1 system with a large subwoofer. For watching movies, the subwoofer really brings the action to life. In my present home, I needed a system that took up less room so I spent about $400 and purchased a Vizio 5.1 system with a sound bar and subwoofer. While the subwoofer could put out of lot a room vibrating base, I felt that the mid base was lacking and speech, at times, was not clear. It had many features including Bluetooth and HDMI but required another remote to change the inputs. After some research, I recently replaced it with the Sonos Playbase (and currently do not have the subwoofer). The Playbase has an impressive amount of base. For watching almost any TV show, I think you will find it to be adequate. If your intent is to watch action movies, then you should consider getting the subwoofer. This is also true for music. It is adequate for most music but if your intent is to play music that has a lot of "boom" and you want to feel the base, then you will want the subwoofer. What I really like about a Sonos system is the seamless interface. You turn on the TV, the sound is there. The Sonos app on your cell phone easily selects any number of music sources including your music library on your PC. Even my non-technical wife can operate it. For my needs, it performs well without the subwoofer. You can always add the sub at a later time.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. The subwoofer will give you the deeper thump but its not needed to get great base sound. Two setups: play base without sub an playbar with sub. Both sound great.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. If you're a bass head, you'll always need a subwoofer. But for small to medium size rooms and reasonable volume levels, it has a very nice bottom end. Much more than you'd think for its size.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. The sound is great without a separate subwoofer. It actually has one inside and sound is well balanced and full. We will eventually add speakers for surround sound and sound in other rooms. But really, this is a great stand alone system.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I’m using the Sound Base with two Play 1’s as rear speakers in a large room and I’m very pleased with the results. I also have a Sound Bar and a Sub with no rear speakers in another room. But the applications are completely different. I’m very happy with both solutions.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. No need for a Sub unless you want one. I think the sound is fine on its own and do not have a sub installed.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. No sub needed if you are going to add a sub. I would say you may want the paybar not paybase but paybase is like sound bar and sub put together.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. No it does not need the sub. I only have the base and two Ones currently and I actually turned the bass down a click. It has a great full sound by itself. Now ultimately it’s depending on your room size and material used for the floors and such but even in Best Buy in the big open room with concrete floors it sounded great. I do plan on getting a sub eventually but the sound without it is what convinced me to go ahead and get the playbase over a typical sound bar.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.No. If you want a subwoofer you'll need to purchase the bar not the playbase. The playbase sounds awesome plenty of base and clear sound.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. It provides moderate bass for the size of the speaker. If you have the cash add a sub.
