No you don't need it but in my case I attached it to a tv that is NOT 4k and it looks just fine.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. My Sharp Aquos Q+ upscales all signals sent to it and upscaling can not be turned off. With the Sony 6500 Blueray player in stream, the display looks even more impressive. I think It must double upscale. My Sharp Q+ will display any 4K content.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. An upscaling TV by itself will upscale only the app content(assuming its a smart TV obviously) such as netflix, and vudu. But if you want to upscale your bluray movies, then you would need the upscaling bluray player...but im not sure if both upscale tv and player together is required for the blurays.. I got both myself just in case. I think upscaling in general does make a difference particularly for new movies such as the new terminator movie. (On a sidenote- 4k upscale tvs and this (sony bluray player) does NOT mean they can stream actual 4k MOVIES from for example VUDU UHD movie choices, even though 4k tvs (upscale or not) can already stream 4k content from apps such as Youtube and GO Pro. As of today 4k is soo new, that not all 4k tvs dont have this capability(such as my upscaling LG 43uf6400). However It may be possible in the future to get tv or bluray player software updates that allow 4k movies, but unlikely.) Netflix 4k Movie capable Tvs List: https://help.netflix.com/en/node/13444
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. No but having a dvd that plays 4K and a tv that does 4K is great. Can't get any better than that.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.upscaling is work intensive... ie... we die usually from a worn out part. I would rather put the load on an cheap, easily replaced unit rather than the TV. the work it does in processing the image crates heat which might not be all that good for the other components of the TV. Spreading the load out might add to a longer life.. I would at least test a 4K upscaling player and compare it to the TV's upscaling. I am happy with the S6500. Just remember to plug it into the 4K hdmi port on the 4K TV.
