Hi Mike564, Standard turntables that do not have a built-in pre-amplifier require a specific amplified PHONO input on the A/V receiver in order to operate correctly. If the A/V receiver does not have a PHONO input and the turntable is connected either through an AUX or audio input, the turntable signal will need amplification from an external pre-amplifier (or an inline amplifier). You'll need a phono equalizer between the turntable and this receiver. If the RCA connections on the rear of the TT have a ground wire attached (spade/fork type screw to post connector) then you would need an external pre-amp (the signal from old tables is very low & needs amplification). You can find pre-amps for $50ish all the way to thousands of dollars. The external pre-amp will go like this [Turntable]--(Red/White RCA & ground wire)--->pre-amp--->(Red/White RCA cables out of preamp)--->into Reciever. The preamp will ground & amplify the signal then send it out via standard stereo RCA cables to any receiver/amp with open stereo inputs. The external preamp will need its own power plug. I used an older player for years with a modern amp using this method. I then upgraded to a modern turntable with an on board preamp so it will work with any amp/reciever (however the new receiver I purchased has a dedicated Phono input which means it has the amp for the TT signal built in, and the built in (Sony BT1060N receiver) has a better amp then the onboard turntable one (which can be turned off on the TT) so it gets the amplification from the receiver rather than the table. (It's a TEAC TN-300 table & Definitive Technologies speakers in a 7.2 configuration).
