No, you do not need two cables, nor need to use both HDMI Out ports. You can just run a single cable from HDMI port 1 to your TV, and it will work as you expect. HDMI port 1 had both the video and the audio that you will want for movies. HDMI port 2 carries audio only, which can be a useful option if you want to run a second cable to your receiver/tuner for example, and use that option to just listen to music on CD's. This disc player also supports Super Audio CD's which is pretty cool, since most disc players don't support that. But using the port 2 is strictly optional.
