They are options you can adjust to fit your needs. I work in a super loud steel mil. I have these on 24/7 and it performs better then my hearing protection at work. I have mine programed when I talk it turns ambient noise on while still providing protection. After 15 seconds or so it switches to noise canceling. I pray this helps just go to settings on the phone app until you fine tone it to your lifestyle.

I turn on the 'focus on voice' mode while I listen to music at lower volume and it does a great job of blocking other noise (fans and treadmill) and piping through the voice of the trainer when I turn 'focus on voice' on. You can adjust the level of ambient sound to your liking too.
