Thank you for your question, Edward. Yes, you can just have noise canceling function. There is a physical button on the WH1000XM5 labelled NC/AMB. Tapping this button will switch from noise canceling to ambient sound mode. In the factory settings, each time the NC/AMB button is pressed, the function switches as follows. • Noise canceling function: ON (You will hear a notification sound.) • Ambient Sound Mode: ON (You will hear a notification sound.) You can also select one of the following on the Sony | Headphones Connect app to set how you want the functions to change when you press the NC/AMB button. — Noise canceling function: ON → Ambient Sound Mode: ON → Noise canceling function: OFF/Ambient Sound Mode: OFF — Noise canceling function: ON → Ambient Sound Mode: ON — Ambient Sound Mode: ON → Noise canceling function: OFF/Ambient Sound Mode: OFF — Noise canceling function: ON → Noise canceling function: OFF/Ambient Sound Mode: OFF Hope this helps. Regards, Erin
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. Both the ANC and ambient sound are much improved over the last model. The XM5 cancels more noise than any other headphone I've used
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Yes, just turn the headphones and NC on. Turn your source off and enjoy near silence.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Noice canceling has different levels. Assuming you are turning the noice canceling to the strongest intensity noice will be significantly dampened, but it'll never be fully blocked. It also depends on the noise. It's best at lower end engine noises like that of a plane or bus. It has gotten blocking chatter around you like work or a cafe. This is with no music on. You play music even at low volumes and it virtually eliminates GOOD amount of noise.
