That is a bogus answer you received from the other person. Wifi calling is a feature that can be implemented by either the manufacturer or carrier of your service. I know this because I bought a Samsung Galaxy S10+ and it was the unlocked variant. I added my existing sim card to it and wifi calling was in the options setup. My girlfriend has a Sony XZ2 Compact and it isn't an option. I also had the XZ Premium and it did not have wifi calling either. My Pixel 5 also has wifi and I bought the unlocked variant as well. Like I said Sony is just dropping the ball with wifi calling. I know this because the Xperia 1 II didn't include it either. I'm sure the Xperia 1 III won't have it as well. That being said I still pre ordered and will just take my pixel along with me in case I need that feature when traveling and if I have to I'll swap my sim card. It's amazing Sony gets so much right but they leave out such an important feature.

NOTE: bestbuy verizon kiosks seem to intentionally mislead people about this, even the verizon reps there at best buy. Go to a verizon store AWAY from bestbuy. Here's what I discovered with my OEM S10+ (bought *directly* from Samsung, not verizon) phone setup for verizon: 1. If you ask BestBuy, or a Verizon rep AT bestbuy, they'll tell you "The entire point of getting a locked phone is to get wifi calling." Lie. Even Verizon corporate (I asked) said that's simply not true. 2. If you go to an *independent* verizon store and ask to have your phone enabled for wifi calling, it's a simply procedure. Some tap/tap/swipe/tap on their ipad then configures your account to have Verizon download *their* wifi software automatically. The reason is that having your phone communicate from phone->wifi->verizon network (in a call mode) is a verizon software specific thing that they don't for some reason require the manufacturer to fold in when you buy from Samsung a "verizon configured phone". A little silly really, since Verizon corporate *themselves* admit that they don't prohibit this, and they simply don't know why it is this happens. The truly odd thing is that often this feature will automatically just work from Samsung purchased phones. Mine was not one of them, and a trip to the local verizon store (again, not bestbuy!) solved the problem. If you're encountering resistance that I didn't, tell them you're escalating this, because no where does Verizon ever say in writing that you cannot have wifi calling. In fact, it's completely the opposite.
