You can wear either the left or right earbud independently to listen to music, take calls, or use other features without needing both earbuds connected at the same time. This is especially useful for situations where you want to stay aware of your surroundings or conserve battery life on one earbud. Just remove the earbud you want to use from the charging case, and it will automatically connect to your device (assuming it was previously paired).
