You need to download additional content from the internet before beginning the game.

You'll need internet for updates and downloads, once those are out of the way you're good to go without a connection.

No you don’t! You’d only need it if you buy the physical version and then want to get all the extra ships and weapons without buying the physical toys. The digital version, which obviously you would need internet access to download, gives you all of the ships, weapons, and pilots.

Possibly for any updates. But internet is not required to play this game.

You need to connect to the internet at least once to download a required 4GB patch. Once that's downloaded, you can remain offline for the rest of the game. They could have used a higher-capacity cartridge to avoid this since the game isn't THAT big, but Ubisoft was cheap about it o_O
