“Is star link used as a hot spot? Like can I set it up at home and use it if I travel out of the country or do I need to take the whole thing with me and remount it? I see they have global roam but I'm not exactly sure how it works.”

The router sends out a wifi signal like any other wireless router. If you use it in a different location, you will have to take the whole system and use the Mobil-Roam plan.
