Yes it will work when mic is not extended, but, works even(much) better when extened.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.You would have to pull the mic out to use it properly. You audio output would suffer if you don't use the mic as intended and you'll get noise feedback on your end which will hurt your ears
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.It should still work when retracted i don’t believe it has any kind of sensor if it is in or out, if you just want it out of the way but still have the ability to talk, just pull it out where the light in the mic is either red or not on.
