• you do not have to hook up cable. you will need to have wifi though. you can use the free options such as; roku tv, pluto, tubi tv, plus several other free choices, and they all have tv shows, music, and movies. you may want to use a tv antenna if you want some live local channels. .

• No but you need an internet connection to use the apps. Then you can use the apps to watch tv. A lot of free apps available and the ones that charge usually give a free trial.
