You do not have to pay unless you want to upgrade ( for example get free battery replacements or another feature is Tile pays you for the lost item that the device can't find. That's $30 per year. I don't subscribe to that so the only thing I've paid for was the tiles. The device has located my keys many times. Totally worth it for me. I use the lithium 2032 batteries and they last at least a year for me. (The app lets you know when it's a good idea to replace the batteries. )
