If the RCN Cable system is based on TiVo, that might work, but I’d suspect that would require getting an RCN branded and supplied unit. As I said in another response, TiVo is pretty much useless without the TiVo service. BTW, the TiVo subscription also include free replacement of failed TiVo for as long as it is under subscription. I’ve had to use this two times in the past after storms damaged my equipment.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Like jmadill said they MIGHT be talking about like that they (the cable company) can rent you a Tivo, and you’re just paying for service like that. Some cable companies use or offer TiVo’s themselves. A retail tivo needs service from Tivo though.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Doubtful. The cable card allows the TiVo to read the incoming signal from the coax; a translator, if you will. No card, no signal. You can’t watch or record. At least that has been my experience.
