Wrong. In order to use the features of TiVo, you must activate it and pay a monthly fee. You still need an antenna to receive the channels, but you need TiVo service to record shows. LB

There is also a TIVO subscription fee.. When I bought the new TIVO at Best Buy, the salesman told me that my life-time TIVO subscription on my previous TIVO should be transferable to my new TIVO. This was not the case . Each time you purchase a new TIVO you will need to purchase a TIVO subscription. This is 19 dollars per month, or a little over 500 dollars for a life-time subscription. Another problem with my new TIVO is that it has a very distinct somewhat unpleasant buzz compared to my old TIVO Premiere which is much quieter. I like the TIVO service, but there are some negatives. If you have an older TIVO such as a premiere that is malfunctioning, I recommend replacing the hard drive (extremely easy) before buying a new TIVO. You can purchase an upgraded TIVO hard drive replacement kit online for a lot less than the price of a new TIVO and TIVO subscription.

But be careful... if you are using this box with an antenna TiVo will charge you the more expensive monthly plan because this box also supports cable card. If you truly want just ota and will never need a cable card consider the TiVo Bolt OTA and then the monthly rate is closer to 7/month. I bought this one to have the flexibility if I ever needed to use a cable card and TiVo refused to give me the lower ota price.
