When Toshiba released the first portable PC in 1985, a portable computer was considered a "satellite" computer to the main desktop. You'd normally do your heavy work on the desktop, and use the "satellite" model for work on the go. Toshiba named their mainstream portable computer series Satellite, and we still use the name today. For the record, it doesn't mean that you can access the internet via a satellite orbiting Earth.
