4-way switches are part of three-way switched circuits that have more than two switches. There are 3-way switches at each end of the circuit with 4-ways "in between". Find those with three terminals and you will have found the 3-ways. Replace one of them with the smart switch.

With your four-way set up is you have a too 3 way switches in the set up And one four-way switch in the middle of them so all you have to do is replace one of the three way switches in the four-way set up with a smart three-way switch and leave the four-way switch as a regular dumb 4 way switch and leave the other three way switch as a regular dumb three-way you don’t have to use all of them in your set up and don’t put a three way switch Where you would put a four-way switch
