Q: QuestionCan this switch be installed by just using three wires (hot, neutral, and ground) in the house, and be able to use the push button on the front of the Kasa switch to turn power on/off to a smart plug outside to be able to turn some string lights on/off?

• A:Answer Yes, all you need is the 3 wires to connect it. It can control the outlet by either a smart app, or the button on the switch. You do not need to install a smart plug on that line then. All you need to do is either install a smart plug to control the lights. Or just the smart switch to control the non-smart outlet. If you installed both, you'd have to turn them both on to work.

• A:Answer Yes it does. We put these all over the house and they work perfectly. Set up from your cell phone or ipad. Talk to alexa to tell them what to do. I put the 3 ways in also. We lose power all the time in FL and these pick up where they were when the power comes back on.

Q: QuestionCan this be used to trigger a routine through Google Home? I have several RGB smart bulbs, and my hope is that I can use this switch to override a red hallway light for instance, and make it white or similar, or change brightness to 100% without a phone.

• A:Answer No, I don't think so. I just checked in the Google Home app and it seems that routines can only be triggered in 3 ways: 1. Voice command, 2. Time, or 3. Sunrise / sunset. So pushing this switch cannot be used as a trigger for a routine, as far as I can tell. This is one of the reasons why I installed Home Assistant recently on an old laptop so that I can create all types of fancy automations in my house, including using this switch and other smart devices made by TP-Link or other companies.

• A:Answer I downloaded the KASA app to do all the set up. I don’t believe you can do the actual set without it. But could be wrong. The KASA app is very simple. After the set up is done both Alexa and Google recognize the device and can be controlled with them. The KASA app does all of the TP Link smart devices.
