You do need a WiFi system of some kind and a smart device (phone, tablet) that is capable to load the TP-Link Tapo app. Then follow the directions to get your device, using Tapo, to communicate with the switch and set it up for your WiFi system (name, password). You can then use the Tapo app to control the switch or add the Tapo skill to Alexa or Google Home for voice command. Yes, it's a few hoops to jump through to get it going, but it works.
