In general, customers find it comfortable to type on - your palms generally rest on the laptop and the lip on this laptop stand is rounded and sinks below most laptops. Having used this product for many years, I personally find no comfort issues when typing (I have used a 13.3", 14" and 15.6" laptop with this product). I use this laptop stand all the time - especially as a lap desk for computing on the couch or in bed. When used as a standing desk, you generally have 2 choices for "optimal ergonomics" - either position the stand so you can type on the keyboard at about elbow-height OR position the laptop so you can view the screen at eye-level. Based on a height of 5'9", you should be able to position your laptop to accomplish one of these standing objectives.
