it depends on if your city uses encrypted radios or not, if they use standard radio frequency's then it should work fine but if they use encrypted radios with a trunking system then you would need a more advanced radio and the security code you should do some research first about radios and scanners etc.. first there is a lot to learn and this did take me a wile to setup but even if it doesn't work for your police department it is still fun to use for example you can tune it to walkie talkie frequency's and other broadcasts here is a good website for looking up frequency's and maybe what your town uses https://www.radioreference.com/apps/db/ hope this helps
