Can headphones be used with this tv? null

Yes, This model does support bluetooth headphone connectivity.

I could not get my headphones to pair with it. The troubleshooting tips in the manual and on the web were spotty. It would be nice to have clarification on WHY some bluetooth headphones won't work. Do they need to have more recent or more powerful bluetooth technology designed for Smart TV's?
