• The 3.1 channel version has a center channel - a separate speaker in the middle of the sound bar - in addition to the left and right end speakers. This can provide notably better dialog clarity as most dialog (voices) come from the center speaker. With only 2 channels the voices are mixed with the music and sound effects in the left and right speakers.

• The "3" is a center channel you can turn up to hear certain frequency ranges better, namely dialogue. This is handy for movies where the sound effects drown out the dialogue.

• The 3.1 has 3 speakers in the sound bar which lets you get closer to surround sound. It has a center, left and right speakers. The 2.1 only has 2 stereo speakers in the sound bar. Both come with the subwoofer.
