A SATA hard drive is the current standard for computers which replaced the older and slower (P)ATA interface. SATA is Serial ATA and PATA is Parallel ATA. The current SATA is faster and uses a much thinner cable from the drive to the motherboard. If you look at the picture, the wider black cable is (P)ATA hooked up to the DVD drive and the thin red cable is SATA hooked up to the hard drive.

Please try again later.Parallel Advanced Technology Attachment (sometimes referred to as IDE, PATA, or simply ATA) is an older connection using a parallel ribbon wire to connect the hard drive to the motherboard. This method of attachment has since the early 2000's been outdated due to maxing out at a transfer rate of 133 megabits per second (roughly 4 music files a second) and replaced with Serial Advanced Technology Attachment (or SATA). SATA III is the current standard with a transfer rate of 6 Gigabits per second (1 movie a second) and is backwards compatible with SATA I and II and will simply be limited on transfer speed. Long story short if your computer was made within the past 15 years SATA is your main option and yes SATA is much much better than PATA (ATA).

Multiple drives needed to be arranged as "Master" and "Slave" drives sharing the connection to the motherboard SATA is a newer standard, it uses only a few wires and cheaper connectors and cables, and it transfers data much faster than ATA. Individual faster cables also allow for easier multiple drive arrangements. ATA is only found in very old computers (older than 2008).

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.ATA is for internal desktops. It's the connection type for the HD to the desktop. Serial-ATA is a newer connection that is faster. Look at images online and you'll see the difference easily.
