"Mechanical" hard drive isn't exactly a term used by the industry, but I think I understand your question. You want to know if this is similar to drives that are traditional drives (write data to a spindle) versus the newer SSD drives that use memory chips instead or whether this drive is faster or slower than most other traditional drives. This is a mechanical drive, in that sense of things. This is a traditional hard drive in a smaller size. It does not require it's own power source, however, which makes it more convenient. It's no faster or slower than most other drives on the market, but part of the transfer speeds you'll get will also be based on the USB port of your computer (whether you have USB 2.0 or 3.0 port). This drive comes with a USB 3 cable, so you can achieve faster speeds if your computer allows for it with a USB 3.0 input. 5GB/s is not the fastest transfer rate in the world, but it's pretty fast by today's standards. There isn't info provided on rpm speeds on this drive, so you probably want to assume 5400 rpm. This drive achieves pretty good speed for a portable drive, so I think you'll be happy with its performance. A 4TB SSD drive would be astronomically expensive at this point (1TB drives go for around $300 already, so....you get the idea).
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. So, this is a mechanical drive. So, on USB 3, it is about 70-100Mbs which is about as fast as possible when not on portable SSD.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Much slower than a mechanical hard drive. If you aren't planning on traveling with it, i would definitely buy a powered hard drive
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. My observation is, it is faster than mechanical old drives. Important is, doesn't require external power supply and not bulky.
