I don't actually know the answer but that is a good question. The person who answered didn't actually specify but it seems they are saying what you already thought. The 6TB will shrink down to 3TB when you mirror them. However I will tell you this one important thing -ALWAYS KEEP 2 COPIES OF EVERY FILE YOU WANT TO KEEP ON SEPARATE DRIVES. Many people think these external drives are safe but they fail at a higher rate then most drives inside your computer. I highly recommend that you mirror the drives because then you will have 2 copies, one on each of the drives. Then you can somewhat safely remove files from your PC if it starts to get full which is what I do. I had the misfortune of removing files from 1 PC that I had onto an external drive. Then that drive died and I lost a lot of files. When I called the Seagate repair person he asked how long I had the external drive, I told him 3 years, he said and I quote "you are lucky most of them don't even last that long". Well I learned my lesson. Don't rely on these backup drives to be reliable. Also keep a 2nd copy either on the original PC where you are backing up from, or on a mirror or RAID array or on 2 separate external drives. Or keep some in the cloud. Personally I don't trust these cloud services. Sooner or later they are bound to be hacked. Hackers hacked the CIA so they can hack the cloud too! My strong recommendation is to Mirror these drives so you can have redundancy of your data, then also buy a small 3.5" External USB drive and occasionally copy your important files to it. Store that at a friends house or your parents or other family member. That's in case God forbid you have a natural disaster and loose your entire mirrored set of drives. That is my strongest recommendation for your most important files.
