• A:Answer Yes, it will work with a mac. All external drives work with a mac. Don't let anyone tell you different. The only thing you have to do is format it to Mac's standard. You will see drives advertised as "works with mac" or "for mac". You can ignore all of that. Any hard drive will work with a mac. Computers talk in 1's and 0's. Nothing complex about it. • A:Answer Just a guess is that they found better ways to do backups and or security issues. Why wouldn't you want the latest and greatest software? Usually before it updates it tells you what it fixes. Check with WD

• A:Answer Yes, I'm doing the same, I was using flash drives, but since I'm also transferring videos ,(mp4 files), I need more storage space. This hard drive is formatted. It also comes with software to automatically back up the entire laptop and set a password for the drive. The file name on the drive is "WD Discovery". You don't have to use the software, you could just do it my favorite way; drag and drop files to this hard drive.

• A:Answer Yes, there are quite a few external Hard Drive models that run on power - instead of relying on USB power. I actually prefer these myself and have a few of them. If you are looking for Western Digital (WD), I would take a look at the "My Book" model or the "WD Elements Desktop" Seagate is another model, the "Expansion Powered drives" Another one is "G-Drive" (no relation to google). These will plug into an electrical source - another cord that connects to your computer using USB. These are larger, not small little drives you can fit in your pocket. The USB powered "Passports" are nice, they are perfect to take with you if traveling.

• A:Answer It should be under the Western Digital folder on you computer drive. However, I just installed this product yesterday and the WD Discovery software did not recognize the My Passport drive when connected to the USB port. If you experience that problem, you will need to download multiple software programs individually from the WD internet support section (path listed on the drive's retail package) in order to use your My Passport. The available software from the WD website includes WD Backup, WD Drive Utilities, WD Security, and Install WD Discovery.
