In simple terms, these can be used in regular PCs, but you are paying for features that you will not use or not very helpful for regular PC user. In fact, one could argue that one of the features supported by these drives is actually (mildly) harmful to ordinary user. Now the long explanation. RED drives are meant to be used with RAID controllers. RAID controllers manage error recovery differently and therefore need disks to limit the time they spend recovering data from platters. Thus there drives will not try as hard as they could try to recover data when something goes wrong. This feature is called TLER (time limited error recovery) NAS drives have TLER supported and usually turned on by default. It may be possible to turn it off. However why would you pay for this and other features (like vibration tolerance/sensors etc) and not use them? Note that desktop drives usually do not have TLER and you should not put them in a RAID enclosure.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Nothing special that will stop them working in any system that can take a SATA 3 drive. Remember these are only 5400RPM so I would not use them for a system drive (that really should be SSD anyway!). These are great for bulk storage for things like media.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. These Drives will work regular desktop...However..They are not meant for performance...They only Spin at 5400RPM...and Have a 64mb Cache... Also..Westerm Digital has replaced the Green Drives with Blue Drives. Black and Certain Blue Drives spin at 7200RPM and have a 128mb cache. Would only recommend REDs for Nas Boxes or Server Systems like freenas or unraid. Hope that Helps
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Eugene - These should not be used in a regular computer unless you have a RAID setup. The Red have a slightly different method of error recovery than the Blue, Black, and Green which allows them to perform better in a RAID situation but not as well in a desktop situation. If you are interested in the details, search "TLER". They also have different head parking settings which may not be desirable. There are ways to make the Red drives perform like a standard drive, but its probably not worth it... search for WDTLER for the program to modify these settings and make sure the drive you buy has firmware that allows this modification. Good Luck! SteveG
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. The red drives will work in the normal desktop computers, if they have the SATA connector. It would be best to match up the transfer rate of 6Gbp.
