The rack is safe for microwave use. It is so you can heat two dishes at a time. However, they recommend removing it if only heating one item. That I do not really understand. I was leaving it in place when only heating on lower level and it was fine. But, when I placed a bag of popcorn on the bottom, it sparked when the paper bag inflated and touched the rack above it. Fortunately, no harm was done. Luckily it removes very easily because I really do not want to store it someplace else.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. An appliance shop video says the rack, if designed for that microwave, is safe to use. (It has no sharp edges, among other design features.) But if left inside while just using the bottom turntable, there's a chance the items on the turntable may knock the rack off its supports and touch the inside of the oven. Expanding popcorn, for instance, can also do this. So better not to leave the rack in if just using the turntable.
