• Yes, but it is VERY easy to pull out and clean. Half a turn and it is out for you to clean.

• it has a plastic filter that needs removed occasionally. I have owned the dishwasher for 3 months and only removed it once to see how to do it. if you pre-rinse the dishes before putting them in dishwasher, I doubt this will ever need cleaned, as it is primarily there to catch food debris.
