Chill, when using HE powder detergent, we recommend dispensing the powder at the bottom of the washer before the clothing. Hopefully this information is beneficial to you. Thank you for your inquiry regarding our Whirlpool appliances!
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Yes, there is a plastic insert inside of the soap dispenser you'll need to take out, before using powder. I haven't used powder myself yet but pulling the insert out is easy.

When you pull out the tray to add the detergent, there is a removable tray within the detergent tray. Leave the tray insert in if you want to use liquid detergent. Remove the tray insert if you want to use powder detergent.
