A dual hose system is the only type of portable a/c to consider. This is why. A/C units work in two parts, condenser and evaporator. The condenser is normally outside and the evaporator inside. Air flows through the condenser and cools the hot Freon which then goes to the evaporator and is expanded which makes it cold. Room air circulates through it and cools your room. The hoses are for the condenser side or hot side. With two hoses outside air comes in and passes through the condenser and is expelled outside as hot air from cooling the condenser Freon. In a single hose system the room air is passed through the condenser and expelled outside. This is not very efficient as your wasting your conditioned air to cool the condenser then venting the hot air overboard. This also causes a negative pressure which will cause hot outside air to be sucked into the room through every crack to equalize the pressure.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. If I was you I'd make that little window work. If it can open six inches it can be made to work. AC works by pumping heat. The evaporator side collects the heat. It does this by using a fan to blow your warm room air through a radiator of little tubes and find. Inside the tubes is a gas that is very sensitive to pressure. When you increase the pressure it gets hot, when cooled under pressure it will turn into a liquid. When you release the pressure it gets cold. Back to the evaporator side. The air used to warm the evaporator coils or tubes has to have warm air in and that same air cooled going out. They will not label these. They are just on the front of the machine. Once the air has warmed the evaporator gas that gas is then pumped under pressure to the condenser where the increased pressure makes it very hot. Hopefully much hotter than the outside air. The condenser needs air to cool it down. In one hose portable air conditioners that air comes from the inside of the house. In two hose units the air comes from outside. If the air comes from inside the house it needs to be replaced or the pressure will drop till the fan can no longer overcome it and the unit will stop cooling. Most houses are not sealed that well though and the replacement air comes from the hot outdoors. This of course defeats the purpose of cooling the house. The only place this can even be expected to be useful is in a larger building with central air where just one room is hot for whatever reason. The main reason these one hose units exist is because most people do not realize how they work. They should never have been made since they literally prey on the ignorant people. It does not cost more to make a two hose system though the extra hose will cost a bit more but you know those are dirt cheap made in china for less than $5.00. So always get the two hose and tell all your friends that the one hose is virtually useless.
