I hooked up two Rockville Rock Shaker 8" 400w Powered Subwoofers. They work great and you can switch the phase and frequency. They also have their own volume control, multiple input/output options, and an auto switch on/off option. They are listed as 4 ohm but since they have so many options to dial them in and of course they are powered, they do not seem to create a drag on the 8 ohm rated outputs of the RX-A780. Just make sure the amp is well ventilated. I'm sure there are several other subs out there that do all those things as well. I think the receiver is rated at 110 watts per channel so it will limit you no matter the watts allowed by your speakers. Oh, the rest of my 7 surround speakers are all 8 ohm - so they match nicely with the amp. Hope this helps.
