It was time for me to get a new vacuum and was searching for the perfect replacement. I have been using the shark brand for years due to it being a reputable and reliable brand. I chose to give the Shark Ion X40 a go and I am glad that i did. There is a lot to like about this 2 in 1 vacuum. :::Pros::: - Lightweight - Cordless - Battery powered (batteries are user replaceable) - Compact design - 2 in 1 design (both hand vac & floor vac) - Large variety or attachments & parts :::Cons::: - Small waste canister The X40 is a modern take on what a vacuum should be. I only recently became aware of the 2 in 1 design. I was using the traditional no frills hand vacuums that you disposed of and replaced due to not having user replaceable parts like the battery. As I stated earlier this 2 in 1 is great because it works on both hard floor and carpet. I have a combination of shag carpet and tied floors at my residence. I found that the floor vacuum performed well and had plenty of suction on a full battery charge. The hand vacuum performs well and really gets in those places where the hand vacuum can't reach. It is lightweight and compact and easy to store in a closet as it does not take up much space. The had vac conveniently docks on the floor vac itself and whomever thought of that is a genius i love not having to drill a hand vac dock onto my bedroom wall like with my previous hand vac. The hand vac really shines due to its portability and practicality. It can be used in a number of paces due to not having to rely on a power source. I tested it out on my car and boy was i impressed. It is much better than the cheap hand vacs meant for cars. Batteries and attachments are sold on the official website. The battery took around 3 hours to charge and it has a battery light indicator to let you know roughly how much battery you have left. All of this is a plus in my book because not having to buy a new vacuum every few years is awesome. Extended batteries are sold and you can purchase multiple batteries depending on heavily you use your vacuum. I will buy other attachments and a battery or two soon. :::TL;DR::: The Shark Ion X40 is a great vacuum at a good price and is a great value. It is portable 2 in 1 vacuum that is compact and has user replaceable parts that ensure you own it for years and not have to buy another every couple of years.

We'd wanted a small stick vacuum for little messes and the Shark X40 fit the bill. There are 2 suction power levels, regular and Ion Boost. Regular feels a bit weak but in Ion Boost mode, the X40 picked up everything we ran it over. Ion Boost can be run in 1 minute intervals or continuously. Battery life is supposed to be 30 minutes but I would guess we get 10-15 continuous run time on Ion Boost mode which is more than enough for our intended use. The website description states a 40 minute charge time but in the instruction book included with the X40 it says 3.5 hours for full charge. That's quite a discrepancy. Our initial charge time from a brand-new, out-of-the-box, partially-charged battery was a little over 2 hours. As for the main vacuum head, the soft brushroll in the front does an excellent job of getting dust off hardwood and in Ion Boost mode the carpet setting did an admirable job on both long and short pile rugs. It's not a substitute for a larger, more powerful vacuum but it's easy to store and very light to maneuver, making it ideal for small jobs. Speaking of storing, my one BIG complaint is that the X40 will NOT stand up by itself. With the suction motor attached, the unit is top-heavy and will fall backward Every-Single-Time you let go. Having to lean it against the wall or a piece of furniture to move something out of the way or pick a toy off the floor is a huge inconvenience. Additionally, the highest part of the machine off the floor is also the heaviest part and contains all the more sensitive components; motor, dust bin, battery and controls. When it tips, that part is going to hit the floor. Hard. We have not let it hit the floor yet but there have been a couple close calls, especially with the kids using it. Good thing it has an 8 year warranty. I have dealt with Shark's warranty department to resolve an issue with another of their vacuums and I can say that their service was top-notch so that's a plus. To safely store the X40, the power plant has to be removed from the wand and hangs on a hook just above the main cleaning head. I considered 3 stars for the tipsy nature of this design but I am very pleased with the X40's cleaning performance and it warrants 5 stars for that aspect. So with 5 stars for performance and 3 stars for design, the X40 is a solid 4 star product as long as you hold on.

Quick touch up with no cord

The Shark ION X40 is a fairly small, lightweight cordless stick vacuum. Easy to just grab it and get a mess up or a quick touch up without having to unwind the cord of a standard vacuum. The DuoClean brush is great for cleaning hard floors and carpets. The standard mode power is ok if you are just trying to clean up a light dusting of crumbs or something. However, to pick up anything of size the ION Boost does the job. Like any battery operated item though, battery life is dependant on use. Using it with the brushroll and ION boost pretty much the whole time you will get about 10-15 minutes of use. To do a quick touch up of my first floor it was plenty of time to get the whole floor and furniture. Though it comes with a crevice tool and upholstery tool, it has nowhere to store them. However, interchanging the parts is easy, even detaching the brushroll from the wand to reach high or low areas. The chargers is plugged directly into the battery, so it can be charged while still in the vacuum or separate on its own. For instance, the closet where you store typically does not have a plug, so you can pull the battery out and charge it elsewhere. There is also a drop in charger sold separately. This is in no way a replacement for a larger stronger vacuum, but it’s priced like it is. That is the one thing that puts me off with it. It’s like getting half a regular vacuum for twice the price. However, not having to go back and forth with a cord and plug may be worth the cost for quick touch ups.

Solid Complimentary Vacuum for Smaller Places

Let me just say first, you cannot buy this vacuum to be your main clean-up machine. While it's great for its intended usage, the suction isn't powerful enough, nor is it big enough, to handle a full workload. That said, I've been using this off and on for about 10 days and it's a great lightweight companion vacuum. The first thing you’ll notice about this Shark is that it’s light. Overall, the vacuum is easy to maneuver with one hand, and it’s no big deal to pick it up, too. This Shark is one of the quietest vacuums I’ve ever used. Even with Ion Boost (turbo) engaged, it was pleasant to the ear. Speaking of pleasant, the advertised battery life is legit. I could routinely hit 38 minutes of usage with normal suction, or about 20 with Boost enabled. Shark includes standard attachments. There are a couple gripes that don’t make it perfect, however. One of the first things I noticed is that the vacuum propels forward when you push it, which sounds great in theory (and can be for bigger rooms), but the technical aspect of moving around the small head between hard-to-get areas while fighting a self-propelling device get annoying. Also, I found the best results with the Ion Boost suction mode was engaged. The vacuum picked up more and seemed to be better suited for pet hair and hard pieces of waste (like litter). Lastly, while it doesn’t claim to, this vacuum doesn’t include any way of wall mounting it. You can purchase an adapter to do so, but something to note. All that said, using this in conjunction with my upright, full-size vacuum is great. I can quickly grab the Shark for coffee spills, litter clean up, or an easy tidying before company. Again, I’d recommend this if you already have a powerful vacuum, or if you don’t have any pets and live in a smaller space.

Smaller, But With The Same Goodness

The best compliment one can pay a product is to buy it a second time. I recently got the ION F80 Cordless vacuum and liked it so much, I had to get its smaller brother, the ION X40. Over the years I've accumulated lot's of vacuums. With the F80 and X40, I now have the perfect combination of vacuums for all my needs. If you have a super large home, neither of these might be the best options, but for my 2200 square foot home, these are perfect. You get one long lasting Lithium Ion battery and it can be charged in or out of the vacuum. You can also get a charging dock if you want. Both the F80 and this X40 can be a bit top heavy with the battery installed, but you just need to rest it against something if you need to take a break. Otherwise, it just feels great in your hand as you use it. If you need extra power, there's an ION Boost button for up to one minute of extra power. It's immediate and powerful. It will run your battery down faster if you use it a lot. But for most needs, the standard power is more than enough. Unlike the F80, the X40 does not have Multiflex Reach, so it doesn't bend if you want to vacuum under spaces like a sofa or table. But that's the advantage of having more than one vacuum for differing needs. At the click of a button, the X40 instantly turns into a handheld vacuum. You get a couple attachments for things like stairs or tight places, like a Crevice Tool and an Upholstery Tool. Both work great in handheld mode. While the F80 is also handheld at the touch of a button, the X40 is much more comfortable in your hand for things like vacuuming your car. Registering the vacuum with Shark is simple. If you have a code scanning app on your phone, simply use it to get to the Shark Warranty page, enter your name, address, date of purchase and where purchased and you're registered. All in all, I have to say I'm mighty impressed with both wand vacuums from Shark. They do exactly what you want a vacuum to do and they do it pretty quietly and really well.

Great Vacuum... could use some minor improvements

SHARK has a brand new addition to their great cordless vacuum lineup - the Shark ION X40. This is Shark's current "low-end" cordless upright vac. The package includes the motor unit, long connector tube, carpet/floor main cleaning module, upholstery attachment, skinny 8" crevice attachment, ION power battery pack, wall charger, quick user guide, and full owner's manual. The vacuum comes with a 5-yr limited warranty and also a 2-yr limited warrant on the battery. PROS: ----------- * The unit picks up dust and dirt very well, regardless of mode. * Extremely EASY emptying of the dust/dirt collection area. Press a button on the side of the unit (while holding over a garbage can) and it falls out easily. Closes easily without any other parts shifting in place. Basically a simple door on a hinge. * There is no index finger trigger that has to be held down to make the unit run. Using your thumb, the on/off button is on the back of the unit. This is a MUCH better design IMO because it also helps to avoid accidental power-ons. It is also great because it makes pushing/pulling the unit more comfortable because your index finger doesn't have to stay engaged to keep the unit running. * The 2 filters are easily accessible for removing and cleaning. Clean with water only, dry for 24 hrs. * The vacuum does have an overheating shutdown capability; however, after 40 continuous minutes of running in non-floor mode (floor attachment not attached) and then also after 12 continuous minutes of carpet mode on ION Boost (high) mode, it never shut down. My guess is that the only way this could happen is if you have the vacuum continuously running with the end clogged where no air could get sucked in. * The floor module has 2 durable transport wheels on the back so it can be rolled from room to room with ease. The cleaning rollers do not engage unless the unit it bent down over the floor with your foot. * The battery can be charged either in or out of the base unit. It has an easy quick-release button to remove it from the unit. * The fact that this battery is not "built-in" is a great feature. If the battery ever fails, you can replace the battery, not the whole vacuum cleaner. Also, the remaining battery power level LEDs are built-in to the battery itself. * There are a lot of attachments and accessories that can be added to this cordless vacuum cleaner (good), but most aren't included in the box (bad). The most-needed part that might should be added to the box is the wall mount. * The control panel is well-lit and easy to read. Only 2 buttons control the functions, and also the power button. CONS: ----------- * The 2 small attachments (crevice tool and upholstery tool) do not *click" into place like some other brands. I like the click, and I like knowing it won't fall off and doesn't have to be pushed on with a necessary amount of force/torque. A minor issue, but a lacking convenience. * For me, this was a "con" but may not be for some people - this unit does NOT hang on the wall unless you purchase a $40 separate wall mount module. It is made to stand up on it's native base with the motor section at the top removed and clipped on to the main pole near the bottom (see picture). It has no problem in this state but it is a bit odd. In addition, when in this storage state, the pole doesn't stand up at 90-degrees, so it won't sit flat up against the wall and save floor space - it sticks out from the wall more. * If you want the rollers to activate in order to use on the floor, you must push down on the floor module; however, my unit was a bit difficult to "pop" loose. I had to step on the top of the floor module instead of the back side because it was snapped into place so hard to the neck of the module. It seems like there should be a foot button/lever to press and make the roller part bend at the neck easier. Mine sounded/felt like it was breaking each time I engaged the floor module. Extremely tight feeling. * ION Boost (high) mode is triggered by pressing the ION Boost button; however, it only stays engaged for 1 minute then goes back to normal ION Power (low) mode. There was no button sequence or holding it down longer to make this function stay active without having to re-engage after every minute of use. This is bit of an annoyance having to hit the button each time instead of just remaining on high the whole time if needed. On the plus side, to turn off "high" mode before that minute is up, just press the ION button. OTHER OBSERVATIONS: ------------------------------------ * The vacuum claims 40 minutes of run-time, but be sure to check the fine print and the "other" run times. Yes, I confirmed that 40 minutes is as long as the battery will last, per their advertising. I was able to get 39m:40s on the lowest setting and no floor module attached. Though 40 minutes is a stretch, it's there on the first few charges. Over time, that number will obviously decrease. In operating with the carpet setting with FULL power mode enabled (constantly), I was able to get 11m:56s of power until the unit died. These times were in line with the owner's manual table. Using the hard floor unit (low power) gets right at 30m of power while carpet mode (low power) gets around 25 minutes - so plan accordingly. If you need more time, you'll either need a plug-in unit or spare battery(s). * Vacuum has 2 different modes: 1) Hard floors 2) Carpet floors. Vacuum has 2 suction speeds: 1) ION Power (low) and 2) ION Boost (high). You may use any combination of these. * Regarding battery temperature: after 40 minutes of not using the floor module, the battery is not warm/hot at the end of that non-stop usage. Battery will recharge immediately. However, after 12 minutes of carpet mode with ION Boost (high) on the whole time, the battery is quite warm and requires about 20-30 minutes of cool-down time before it can be recharged. The battery physically won't allow it to be charged if it's too hot. The light-flashing sequence on the battery will let you know if it's charging or not while plugged into the wall unit cable. * A completely discharged battery takes around 3 hours to charge. CONCLUSION: ===================== Overall, this was a well-thought out product. You'll generally get around 25-30 minutes of continuous non-boost floor cleaning and between 30-40 minutes of using the crevice and upholstery tools. If you need more time that that, you'll want to consider buying an extra battery or 2. Each battery runs $70. Most people won't need 2; however since the battery isn't built-in, that's a huge plus for this unit. Other brands with built-in batteries have to be recharged before using again, but not this one (if you have a spare battery). Not providing an included wall mount is a downside for sure. I'm not interested in spending another $40 to have the mount - include it with the main unit to make it a bit more complete. The easibility in emptying the dust canister is a huge plus over other brands. I'd say overall though, this product holds up well against the competition. A few tweaks here and there would definitely help make this vacuum a serious cut above the rest.

This is a sturdy, lighter-weight alternative I preferentially reach for over the heavy full-sized corded push vacuum we also keep in our home. First, it was easy to assemble the 3 main pieces, insert the lithium battery, and use straight out of the box without ever referencing the manual. After the first use over the carpeted portions of our main floor which had been vacuumed only one week prior, I was impressed how much dust, hair and dirt was collected in the Shark’s canister. I suspect this is multifactorial, including the Shark’s carpet brush, relatively decent suction (for a small-sized vacuum), and the fact that its cordless build allowed me to breeze through all the dirty, distant corners I otherwise would have skipped over because they were outside the cord’s reach. It transitioned with ease from carpet to hardwood floor, where is also seemed to have adequate suction and picked up dog hair without wrapping around the brush roll. I also appreciate that the top quickly and easily detaches to form a handheld “dustbuster”, though after using this for less than 10 minutes to spot clean my car’s interior, it started to feel pretty heavy. The suction in this mode covers a small surface area even with the attachments and doesn't have outstanding suction strength, but then again, I’ve never encountered a lightweight handheld vacuum I would consider outstanding. Battery life seems adequate, as I was able to do our entire first floor of our 2,600 sq ft home on less than a half a charge, and when I was done it was easy to empty by holding the handle over the trash and releasing the canister’s hinged drop-down base. Overall, this was a worthwhile addition to our closet that will be put to use on at least a weekly basis.

I purchased this shortly after my daughter got hers. I have been using a large, cumbersome older vacuum and I love the ease of use. It is easy to charge the battery while it is connected, and I can do a “quick” cleaning of my entire house on one charge. If I am doing a deep clean, I still need to use my bigger vacuum. The biggest drawback I have is cleaning it after using. I have shedding dogs. Although the dog hair does not wind on the roll, it does accumulate on the brushes. I have to clean the hair off the brushes after cleaning about half of my home. Had I realized this, I would have gotten the one with the rubber roller instead of the brushes.

This is great to have for a second vacuum. I keep it upstairs and find it great for daily use in the bedrooms and convenient to use on the staircase. The suction is not as strong as my full size corded vacuum, but I find it sufficient. The battery stays charged long enough for me to vacuum the four bedrooms. It is great on hard floors, as the dual brushes prevent The dirt from being thrown behind as you go. I think improvements can be made on the canister that collects the dirt. There is a two part canister, and sometimes one side gets blocked, not allowing dirt into the other side, so you have to empty more often. For the most part I am pleased with this purchase.

Love this vacuum. I love that it is cordless and light weight. I had a older version of this and enjoyed it as well. Comparing the two i would have liked for this one to have a light on the front. Other than that it’s a great vacuum. I use it on my tile floor and carpet. Makes cleaning so much easier than sweeping. Battery charge last long before going dead.

Shark ION rock's it! Great cleaning, no cord!

The Shark Ion X40 is the perfect companion to my home of robot vacuums (I have one on each floor). I say that as robot vacuums become more and more prevalent, they cannot get certain spaces. They can’t get floor boards or steps, or other hard to reach areas. You can’t get rid of your vacuum for those cases. I own several older shark uprights that are very similar to this model in size and loved them. When I saw the X40, I knew that I had to give it a try, as the thing keeping me from sweeping the steps on a regular basis was the cord. The Shark ION X40 doesn’t disappoint. Lithium battery technology has come a long way, and the ION lasts a good while on battery (I cleaned for about 25 minutes and still had a bar of battery w/ a mix of carpet and hard floors). I have to say it cleans as well as it’s corded brethren, or better (the Duo brush tech does a great job, my original Rocket doesn’t seem quite as good, but the Rocket Duo Clean is still the champ). I love the ease of the controls and charging (you can charge w/ the battery in the vacuum or out if you want to get a spare - which Shark sells for $99 w/ a dock). The controls found on the top of the vacuum unit let you turn it on, switch between carpet and hard floor mode (roller brush power switch essentially) and ION power mode boost which is basically the ‘high’ setting for suction. I found the standard power mode pretty effective, and was surprised how much it picked up. We have 3 cats, so fur and dander are definitely a problem. The ION cleaned very well, and I appreciate that it has a washable filter. If you haven’t had a Shark upright before, one of the best features was the ease of switching from an upright, to a hand vac, to a extended hand vac by just unclipping different parts. This carries over to the ION and it’s made even better by being wireless. This means you can be sweeping, see some cobwebs in the corner of the ceiling, detach the power head and suck up then just reattach the power head and go. Another great thing about the Shark design is also the ability to reach under items since the head is so small. You can easily flatten out vacuum to get under tables etc. In the box you get the vacuum, battery, charger, manual, a crevice tool, and upholstery tool. There are a ton of Shark accessories that you can add on for more tools. I’m lucky in that at least some of my old Shark vacuum accessories appear to work so that was a plus. I had to charge it for about 2 hours before the battery was fully charged for first use. The vacuum is lightweight (it feels about the same as my original Rocket a bit lighter than the DuoClean version), and the materials feel great in your hand as the handle has a slight grippy rubbery feel. Unlike some other Shark models, you won’t find LED lights on the power head, but I can live without that in trade for better battery life. The main unit detaches and has a hook to store it near the base of the power head. All my shark vacuums have had this feature, but this one makes the most sense. It stores sideways, meaning that it takes even less space to store than previous models which hooked at the base of the main unit. It also feels more stable compared to my older models. Unlike the Rocket DuoClean, the dust canister doesn’t detach. This is actually ok since you aren’t fighting with 25ft of cord when emptying the unit. The release is easy to use and you can dump it directly in your trash can without making a mess. The filter housing is easily opened up top and like I mentioned previously it has a washable filter (which should be washed about once a month). Another interesting feature is the brushroll garage, which allows you to get at both sides of the brushroll for cleaning/maintenance. No longer are you pulling at strings and trying to extract hair without much surface area to work with. The vac comes w/ a 5 year warranty, and the battery a 2 year warranty for reference. So far I’m loving this vacuum. It’s so freeing to use, and complements the robots of the household well and gets where they can’t. You could easily use this to take care of a 1500-2500 sqft house on its own (and larger w/ an extra battery pack). The only downsides to the shark are the power head size, which is significantly smaller than brush rolls you’ll find on traditional designs. There are plenty of pluses to this design, so it's just something to be aware of. If you love other vacs, like the Rocket, you'll love this unit even more. To me it fulfills the original promise of the Rocket as a versatile and quick tool for cleanup. Overall, this is a great battery powered vac!

This is a good vacuum and worth the money. The only only negative thing about it is the way it stores and how long it takes to change it but once charged it last for a long time.

The great thing about this vacuum cleaner is that it's cordless. The bad thing about this vacuum is that it's cordless. The run time on this is about 35 minutes and depending on the size of the home means you will be charging it after every use. Not too bad. But if you come from a wired to cordless you'll notice this one does not suction up as much. There is a more suction power mode. But then it eats the battery and only lasts about 10 to 12 minutes. So it's your size or home is moderate you can definitely vacuum in 12 minutes and then recharge it. Other than that I love being cordless! Hope this helps.

Great light weight vacuum. Well engineered with removable battery. Battery charge time is long-three hours + for full charge. works well on all floor types.
