Customers are saying

Customers regard the A40 TR Wired Gaming Headset as having excellent sound quality and comfortable design, with many praising the MixAmp's functionality and customization options. However, some customers find the headset expensive and have noted compatibility issues with certain consoles, along with concerns about weight and setup complexity. The headband's durability has also been questioned by a few users. Overall, the positive feedback on audio and comfort is significant, but potential buyers should consider the price, compatibility, and weight before purchasing.

PROs: - Excellent build quality; though the headphones feature predominantly plastic construction they still manage to feel incredibly solid and reassuring on the head--the newly redesigned Gen 4 MixAmp Pro TR feels about as heavy and solid as a block of metal - Some truly inspired elements of usability and interface design: -- Metal earcup sliders feature hash marks to take the guess-work out of re-sizing the cans to your head after an adjustment, storage, or cleaning -- New mute slider control on the redesigned headphone cable features a slider switch and visible red mark to indicate it's engaged--not only does the switch stay in place so the mic stays muted when you activate the control (unlike last year's momentary push-button interrupt control), but the LEDs on the volume and MixAmp dials turn red -- Helpful but unobtrusive LEDs indicate whether the MixAmp is in PC or PS4 mode, which of four onboard EQ profiles is activated (which can be switched on the fly with a push of a button), and whether Dolby processing or pass-through is enabled (marked with a lighted Dolby Headphone logo vs the Astro "star" icon) - Giant volume dial oozes with premium feel and movement (reminds me of the giant volume dial on the ultra high-end Astell & Kern ACRO L1000 headphone amp); smooth analog pot turns reassuringly through 180 degrees left to right--the definitive rotary stops stops at 270 and 90 degrees give you lots of room for fine volume adjustment without feeling like you have to turn the dial FOREVER to go from 0 to 100% - The Mixamp dial features similar premium-feeling movement but a helpful detent right at the 12 o'clock position to let you know when you've got a perfect 50/50 mix of voice and game audio - I was surprised at how good the A40 TRs actually SOUNDED--with a multitude of presets and customizations possible with the Astro Command Center's 5-band EQ, I ultimately found a very pleasing setting for gaming and was even MORE surprised at how well they work with music and movies; the bass especially was visceral and almost hefty without feeling sloppy or muddy; mids and highs seemed clear without being sparkly, sibilant or harsh - Surround rendering was incredibly convincing with continuous panning and depth cues easily discernible - Clearly designed with the competitive, serious, or e-sports gamers and content creators in mind: -- MixAmp Pro TR supports daisy chaining to other MixAmps to allow private, 100% lag-free local chat with other MixAmp users without having to go through a chat/game server -- Mic profiles allow you to adjust mic input level (obviously), but also tailor noise gate performance to suit the environment (quiet studio, noisy tournament, etc.) and adjust the side tone to tweak how much of your own voice you'll hear over the headset -- Astro Command Center gives simple, intuitive slider adjustments to allow customization of mix levels for game audio, chat audio, microphone, and even AUX signals into a single analog-out "Stream" signal - Sport mesh earpads and headband cushions don't retain heat so they can support long-term gaming sessions without getting sweaty - These are Astro A40s after all--deep physical customization options allow you to change up styling cues with themed and custom eartags (which handily are held in place by magnets rather than dodgy snaps and catches) and mod kits that convert these cans from semi-open to closed-backed with leatherette ear pad materials, leatherette headband padding, and an even better noise-cancelling microphone - Speaking of the eartags, imagine my surprise to find that when you remove them, there's a mic port on the backside of BOTH drivers...this allows you to configure the A40s so that you can wear the microphone on either side of the headset! CONs: - Slightly confusing setup on Windows--ultimately you're directed to download the Astro Command Center from the Windows Store even if you've downloaded the original package from Astro's website - Portability takes a blow to the face here--you're given no case or even silken bag to carry the A40s; but even if you do buy a case for the headphones, you still have to cart around the MixAmp Pro TR (doesn't have a carrying case/kit even on Astro's website) which is now even bigger, bulkier and heavier and than previous years' more vertically oriented models--oh, and a headphone cable...and a USB cable...and an optical cable for the PS4...and maybe a daisy chain cable to connect with friends--eventually your desktop or tabletop will look like a bag of snakes unfurling from the MixAmp which, due to the resident volume and preset control buttons, is clearly designed to be sitting within arm's reach; if you game from a couch or easy chair a ways back from your TV or console/PC, that bag of snakes is going to be following you across the room - Don't be fooled--Dolby Headphone processing only works natively (via the Dolby Headphone button) on the PS4--you are NOT getting a hardware Dolby Headphone surround solution, or even one vested in the Astro Command Center, if you're a PC gamer. This is a DEFINITE let-down for those of you picking up this unit for its apparent cross-platform surround capabilities because this limitation isn't really made clear in the manual or via Astro's marketing materials. To enjoy surround on a PC, you have to keep the MixAmp in bypass mode and activate Window's own Sonic Spatial enhancements, or spend additional money in the App Store for Dolby Atmos provisioned via the Dolby Access app, or a DTS-based solution via DTS's forthcoming DTS Sound Unbound app - Speaking of the MixAmp--as a USB sound card, it's pretty...just okay. Windows only sees it as a stereo soundcard and it appears to be locked at 16 bit/48 kHz sampling (DVD quality) which means no hi-rez audio capability. While I understand the SQ takes it up a notch from previous MixAmp models--and don't get me wrong, the A40s do SOUND good when driven by the MixAmp--don't think you're getting a top-shelf DAC (digital-to-analog converter) in the MixAmp Pro TR - Though the microphone was swappable for either side, the same cannot be said of the cable port--granted, there are more people who mouse with their right hands than their left (I'm one of them), but I'm willing to bet there are some lefties out there who would appreciate having the headphone cable snake out from the other side of their HPs...just a thought for the good people at Astro who clearly put a lot of time and thought into the design of their gear - Here's where I was shocked--despite all the Astro zealots out there extolling the virtues of the A40s, I actually found these headphones to be very uncomfortable. Despite being mostly plastic, they're actually kind of heavy; I found clamping force to be uncomfortably high both downward and inwards; the earpads, though comfy to the touch, have VERY small openings that qualify the A40s as on-ear at best--combined with high lateral clamping pressure and my earlobes were screaming at me to take the A40s off; and the small headband cushion created a very uncomfortable hot spot on the top of my head after about 10 minutes that I could never eliminate no matter how much I resized, re-adjusted, or took breaks from my gaming session--a BIG disappointment given how well-renowned these headphones are for comfort Summary review: There's a lot here to [potentially] like about the new Astro A40 TR/MixAmp Pro TR package in terms of design, features, usability, and even sound quality--and perhaps I'm an anomaly given the large swathes of the gaming community that swear by these cans, but I just couldn't get into them. Honestly, I grabbed them specifically because I wanted to see what all the fuss was about, and because I've been looking for a surround-capable headphone that would work seamlessly across the PS4 and PC platforms. Sadly, the latter is not the case here. Though fully featured for tournament and e-sports gamers, streamers, and content-creators, the MixAmp Pro TR is just a fair PC USB soundcard and doesn't actually provide on-board Dolby Headphone surround as the design would otherwise imply. If you're exclusively a PS4 gamer, you probably aren't going to care; but given that one of the selling points of this Gen 4 package was compatibility across multiple platforms, this is a big letdown. Though sound quality on the headphones themselves is actually quite good, I found them to be so uncomfortable that it was a chore to try slogging through even a few hours of gaming with them; I can't imagine the leatherette earpads and headband cushion from one of Astro's storied mod kits would do anything more (for me) than simply make my ears hotter. Given my strong negative reactions for ergonomics and comfort, I STRONGLY encourage you to audition the A40s for yourself before investing in a package this pricey, especially if you are also a PC gamer hoping to capitalize on what appeared to be onboard surround processing. Having said that, there are probably good reasons the A40s are so popular and they actually do SOUND pretty nice; so if you already know what to expect in terms of fit and comfort, if you're a PS4-only gamer, or a PC gamer in need of some powerful streaming, content creation, or tournament-oriented features, this package still just might fit your needs.

I upgraded from Logitech G933 Wireless, and I have to say that while the sound from those were good, this headset really blows it out of the water. I immediately could tell that the sound quality was improved, and the ear cups are more comfortable for long gaming sessions. The dials to adjust voice volume vs game volume is also very convenient. Add in the equalizer options and you have got an amazing headset for all your gaming needs.

I had originally bought this just to use with my PS4, but it has seen use with PC and my phone, oddly enough, as well. I haven't tested it on my PS3, but I imagine it would work just fine with that console, too. You will need to use the included optical cable with your PS4 if you want to use the dial for voice chat/game audio mixing. You can plug in a phone or any other device to the AUX line. If you use the right kind of cable, you can even use the headset to talk on the phone while you keep playing your game. I'm not a big sound person, I just wanted a nice pair of headphones for playing my games at night. These get plenty loud without the sound getting distorted and the bass sounds nice and punchy without being overpowering. The cables are higher quality rubber—not braided, which may be an issue to some.. The headset itself feels like it will withstand punishment, although for the price (I got this bundle on sale for $200) I sure wouldn't be rough with them anyways. I've worn it for hours and never felt like I needed to take it off due to discomfort. The sidetone (feature where you can hear you're saying into the microphone) is turned ON by default, but you can adjust the volume (or turn it off) if you plug the mixamp into your PC with the USB connection and use the Astro Command Center. You can also make changes to the preset EQs or even the noise gate for the microphone and save that to the mixamp as well. I can't really comment on the quality of the microphone, because I don't really use it for much. The few times I've used it to talk with someone on the phone, no one complained about the sound quality on my end. In the few weeks I've had this, I would say it's really easy to recommend this headset if you're looking for something a little higher end than the sub-$100 choices.

Upgraded from a generation 1 Astro A50 (battery only lasts 3 hours and volume rocker is messed up) and Razer Kraken Pro. I wanted the Mixamp so I can control my volume easily (inline volume controls on the wire is cumbersome). You can order customizable tags for the sides of the headset which I will do in the future, the mic is crystal clear (it's like hearing me in person), headset is great for the PC, PS4, and soon PS5. Comfort is pretty good too.

Okay, so I'm 45 day in - using this Headset. I use it mostly for gaming, but also for watching videos occasionally ! Love the Mix-Amp, which allows for separate adjustment of the Microphone and Headset volumes. The Mix-Amp LEDs are not only very helpful with volume control, but they look pretty cool, too. The microphone is fully adjustable and swings completely out of the way. The Headset is independently adjustable, from both sides, and its cushioned ear-muffs make it very comfortable. Great product from Astro Gaming !!!

This headset and mix amp are amazing. The sound quality is excellent and mic is really good also. Plus they are really comfortable. I wear these for hours and forget they are on my head. If you sit far back from you tv, these might not be for you. The cable can get annoying at times. I only sit about 4ft back and have pulled the cable out of mixamp a couple of times. If you don't mind spending a lot of money on gaming headset you won't be disappointed.

You can't beat the sound quality and comfort of these. I mainly got them because of the fact that Astros are the only headphones that I can wear for hours without any fatigue. The second selling point for me was the mixamp. I like being able to easily control chat vs game volume. I thought I'd use the surround more than I have. It seems like most modern games simulate a surround-ish sound stage with the stereo setting. Turning on surround adds a ton of reverb and makes music sound a bit off, so I only turn it on when I'm trying to do something semi-competitive. Cons: The quality of the finish on the plastic parts is far below what it used to be. I own a much older pair of astro a40's (a discontinued set which came with a "wireless" mixamp) and the finish on the old pair has shown minimal wear, while these, not even a year old, have a severely chipped finish. Whatever paint they used on the plastic was not properly bonded meaning they probably did not use a proper primer when applying. These look very ugly now compared to my old set which have absolutely no chipping paint whatsoever.

Awesome gaming headset, Super comfortable like wearing a pillow on your head, ive tried like 15 different pair of headphones and these are the best ones by far that ive tried on and wore over an extended period of time. Great sound Quality and using the mix Amp to turn chat volume vs game volume up is really awesome. makes it easy to stream as well as game. use astros command center software to get the most out of these headphones. awesome audio quality and great mic quality no complaints from teammates. you get mod kits through astros website that allow you customize the way your headphones look and feel, for example you can change cushions from the standard ones to a leather type cushion with a mod kit. different color speaker tags . super helpful if the ear cushions get worn over time due to basic use, more longevity in the headphones over time. mod kits come with two speaker tags two cushions, a mic and the headband replacement cushion. i cant stress enough how much better these headphones are then the competition. any parts you would need are all on astros website making these headphones practically brand new if you need to swap a mic or cushion out. totally worth it.

This is my first Astro purchase ever and I have to say that I’m not disappointed. The sound quality is great and the mix amp is very useful. I love the removable magnet plates and the customizable options that it gives you. The set up can be a bit tedious, but if you follow the instructions it should be a breeze! You won’t regret it! I just wish the cable management was easier lol.

Upgraded from a Turtle Beach Recon 50. Major improvement in terms of audio, configuration, and mic performance. However, I do think the A40 w/ mix amp is a little overpriced. The headphones do have some weight to them and long use can become uncomfortable on the ears. However, the mix amp is awesome for quick audio and mic control. Don't know, if I would purchase again, but buying the mix amp separate I would recommend.

I honestly am not a gamer but I got this at a great price because they were open box. I work from home and I really needed a good headset to listen to my music and be able to take phone calls on. These actually turned out to be the best purchase I had ever made! With having the MixAmp Pro TR Controller, I am able to turn down the music I was playing and turn up the speaking volume when someone calls me. Someone had also made the comment, "You must have really good headphones if you can hear me typing. I can't hear what's going on in your background." I am glad nobody can hear what's going on in the background because my work desk is right next to the other side of my bed where my boyfriend sleeps and I was worried people could hear him snoring like a bear. The sound on the headphones is amazing! especially when you hit the Dolby button. I was sold once I heard my music and it sounded as if I was there listening in person. The only downside to what my boyfriend thinks is that when he calls me from the other room, I can't hear him. My music is a bit loud. :D

Purchased these to use for gaming and for work-related phone-calls on VOIP and in-game live chat. Only had them for approx 24 hours so I can't speak to things like durability and I have yet to try the telephone features, BUT based ONLY on the gaming/surround sound quality these rate at least 4 stars. Microphone is a bit flimsy but works very well and the Mixamp while slightly gimmicky is pretty cool and feels very solid... keep in mind so far I've only used it for chat in COD so YMMV. Now on to the MOST important factor in headphones for your truly ... my BIG FAT HEAD rotfl! I'm joking here but also serious having gone through 7-8 expensive sets because even without my glasses most are just too tight! (WITH glasses they become physically painful after about 40 minutes) To be fair I DID have to adjust the A40 TR to its maximum size setting, BUT at maximum they fit me perfectly and are comfortable after HOURS of gaming! FINALLY!!!! FIVE stars and they deserve every one.

Out of all the gaming headsets I've tried over the years the Astro headsets have always been the best. I've upgraded to newer ones not because the old one had any problems, but because I wanted the new features. All my Astro headsets are still working perfectly. I can't say that for any other brand that I've tried over the years. So I decided that I wanted to switch from last years wireless A50 to this new wired A40. I really like having the external volume & mix controls and happy to not have the 5GHz transmitter on my head for hours at the time. What I have been unhappy about with ALL gaming headsets is that NONE of them have been very good for general audio from listening to music or videos on the computer. So I always had to use another headset for doing my audio editing on the computer. But not any more. Not only are the new A40 really great with game audio they are also very good for computer audio in general. I am now able to use the A40 for everything which I am very happy about. Now they aren't going to make an audiophile happy for critical listening. But being an audiophile I can say they are good enough for most of what I personally want and need. And for gaming the positional audio is top notch. I can hear the footsteps behind me and better tell where things are coming from. The mixamp looks and feels well made. The knobs feel nice. The cable jacks are in the right place. It's heavy enough that it doesn't get pulled around by the cables. Overall very nice design. The only complaint I have is with the Aux port on the mixup. While I'm gaming I like to have that Aux jack hooked up to my computer so I can play audio from the computer into my headset while playing on the console. This is where Astro fails spectacularly. They went really cheap on that circuit and didn't isolate it in any way. So if you plug ANYTHING into that jack that is also plugged into the wall electrical outlet you are going to get noise. Unbearable noise. It makes this jack absolutely useless. Now if you are going to plug your phone into it then it will work just fine. I was able to fix the audio Aux input problem by spending another $50 on a Sescom IL-19-mini. This hum eliminator completely eliminates all noise from the connection to my computer. So I'm happy, just disappointed that I had to spend extra bucks to make it do what it should have done out of the box. Now I do have to say using the USB cable plugged directly into the computer it works just fine and there is no noise. Only when you use the Aux input jack connected to your computer audio out do I have the noise issue. When I use the headset for my computer work I use a USB switch to switch the headset from the console over to the computer directly and it works perfectly. Couldn't be happier. This headset is really worth every penny to me. I originally got it because I just wanted to get rid of the wireless headset on my head, but I was really blown away by the audio quality compared to the previous generation A50 and well every other gaming headset I have ever tried. So really don't even think twice about getting this headset. It really is a great value, even if I did have to buy something to fix that one problem. PS to Astro... I still see no reason why Astro can not build one headset/mixamp that works on both PS4 & Xbox. There is no way you will ever convince me that they could not put the software in one mixamp to work with both consoles. Same for the A50. At least with the A40 I can buy the Xbox mixamp seperate and use the same headset easily.

I had been searching for a headset to go with my ps5 and honestly I researched for a long time. After looking over many reviews from different sites I felt a little stuck because of all the negative feedback I've seen for just about every headset I looked at. I originally pulled the trigger on the astro a40 without the mixamp. Honestly I was disappointed with it. I didn't feel for the price that it gave me a big upgrade from my cheap headset. Thankfully I decided to return it and get the astro a40 with the mixamp. I can tell you the difference was night and day. The sound is amazing and the mic is very good. The headset itself is very comfortable as well. While it is a little spendy I have zero regrets with this purchase. I highly recommend this headset.

The mix amp itself is excellent. The actual headset quality is decent. It still lacks bass but at least it is comfortable. The biggest issue is the 2mm aux cable is made pretty cheap. Mine wore out in 3 weeks causing a lot of distortion to my audio. You can literally plug any other headset into the mix amp and achieve the same quality of sound. Not worth it's price.

In the past, I have owned nothing but Turtle Beach headsets and I thought that all of the previous ones that I owned were awesome! Then this little jewel came along and I read some pretty good reviews and it came highly recommended... Let me be one to tell you, for a gamer, this headset is a MUST!! The overall sound quality is bar none and the ease of sound adjustment provided by the mixamp make this headset extremely easy to use and user-friendly, as well as, provides some of the best sound quality I have ever received through a headset for gaming. There is a reason people use these in serious competitions and I now know why. I would highly recommend this to anyone who is wanting a professional quality gaming sound while playing. It will take some getting used to if you haven't had a headset of this quality but it is well worth it. From the design of how it looks, to the customization offered after purchase, to sound quality, and durability, this headset is by far the best I have ever owned over the years and I would HIGHLY recommend this product from Astro.

These are the best... if you're willing to put in a little bit of effort. Step 1 - Download the Astro Command Center Step 2 - Join the ASTROGaming discord Step 3 - Follow the directions to see all the presets available on the discord Step 4 - Find presets you like and test some out, save all the ones you like. If you are going to hook it up to PS4 or PS5 sync your favorite 5 to the Amp. Step 5 - Watch tutorial on youtube for PS5 settings so you can adjust audio settings to your liking. These headphones will take some time to adjust to your liking. It is not because they suck, it is because they are highly customizable. If you use them right you will find that being able to switch from a setting you like for movies, to one you like for general gaming, to one you like for music, one you like for FPS to hear footsteps etc... within an instant is awesome.
