What is air frying? It's certainly not deep frying, and that's a good thing health wise. We owned a deep fryer but got rid of it many years ago. The smell, oil disposal, and health risks of deep frying outweighed the great taste of the deep-fried food. Not many people have deep fryers these days for those very reasons. After you have tried this appliance, you may also be saying goodbye to pan frying as well. An air fryer does not fry food in the traditional sense. It circulates very hot air to cook your food and can successfully make it crisp on the outside like deep frying, but without the high calories you would consume if you fried the food the old way. And it cooks the food in less time as well without the greasy spatter and inconvenience of deep or pan frying. The taste? Just wonderful! I am posting a picture of the chicken we prepared, as well as the sweet potato fries we made as a side dish. Both were cooked and on the table in just over 35 minutes. The Ninja has an ample basket which holds 5 1/2 quarts. It was certainly large enough to easily hold the 3 1/2-pound chicken we cooked. There are many recipes available, but I found one which used a seasoned rub to coat the chicken. The product was well-cooked and extremely moist on the inside. We chose to roast the chicken, using that function on the Ninja. The skin was well-flavored, but not crispy. Air frying could produce a crispier skin, but we have not yet tried that with chicken. You do not generally batter the food like you would if you were deep frying, but it is possible to use a more traditional battering approach. If you do, Ninja advises that you must use the proper breading technique. "It is important to coat foods first with flour, then with egg, and then with breadcrumbs. Be sure to press the breadcrumbs onto the food with your hands. Because the air fryer has a powerful fan as part of its mechanism, breading can sometimes be blown off. Pressing the breadcrumbs firmly on will help them adhere". The sweet potato fries were also superb: sweet and tasty on the inside, crisp on the outside. At least the second batch was. I was guilty of an initial boo-boo. When I prepared the fries, I had forgotten about the juice from the chicken underneath the crisper plate at the bottom of the basket, and I was anxious to get the fries finished to go with the chicken. As I tossed the fries out of the basket, out came the chicken juice on top of them! I quickly cleaned out the basket. It is ceramic coated and dishwasher safe, so cleaning is always a breeze. I quickly prepared another batch of fries and we sat down to enjoy the feast! There are several important tips to remember. It is recommended that before cooking the food, you pre-heat the basket for three minutes. I always do this. Second, you are generally going to have to move the food around in the middle of the cooking session. It is easy to do. When you pull the basket out, it automatically stops the timer. For fries, you just give them a good shake. The chicken had to be flipped over. Push the basket back into place, and the timer picks up where you left off. We also tried frozen fries, and the results were as good as any french fries I have ever tasted. So crisp, and not a drop of oil or grease! Note that this model comes with a broil rack. I have not yet used that function, nor have I tried dehydrating food for snacking. I look forward to trying out both. One note: the crisper plate, which is used for preparing some foods, including the chicken we cooked, has what look like rubber feet. I am sure they are not rubber, because rubber would certainly melt or deform at some of the hot temperatures these cookers use. I was tempted to remove the feet before placing the crisper plate at the bottom of the basket, but the instructions did not mention doing this, and shows illustrations with the feet in place. I left them alone, and they have weathered the temperatures just fine. This wonderful appliance is going to change the way we prepare food. We have enjoyed every minute of both using it and tasting its wonderful results. .

    My Wife's New Favorite Appliance

I have been hearing about the wonders of air fryers for a long time and was anxious to give one a try. I am happy to report that they are as great as everyone says. When I opened this thing up my wife's eyes got as big as saucers. She loves chicken wings and couldn't wait to make a batch. A recipe book comes with great instructions on how to cook wings, fries, and many other items. For our first dinner we made wings and fries, purchasing them both in the frozen goods section at our local supermarket. They both turned out amazing! The wings were crispy and delicious plain, but we also melted some butter with some hot sauce to toss the rest. You can fit about 8-10 good sized wings inside the extra large basin which makes for a good sized batch. You don't fry them on the wire rack like I have them pictured below. We figured out pretty quickly that the rack is really only for broiling. The fries also turned out crispy, which is how I like them. A few were a little too crispy but we can just take a minute off the timer next time we make them and I think they will be perfect. We have already purchased some frozen onion rings for our next go around! I was worried that cleaning this fryer might be a pain. However, it was not nearly as difficult as we thought. The basin has a rack at the bottom that can easily be removed and washed and the basin itself is easy to wipe down at that point. Other notes: - For the kids we have also tried out some chicken nuggets and they tasted way better than when we heat them up in the oven. - We haven't tried it yet but this device can also be used as a food dehydrator which is pretty cool. If you are looking for a healthier way to enjoy foods that are typically deep fried, this is a fantastic option. And I definitely suggest going with a large model so that you can make large portions if you are serving multiple people.

    Ninja's "Magic Cooking" with Air

The Ninja Air Fryer XL model AF161 is a must have for the kitchen. It uses super hot air to cook food. You can use frozen foods like chicken nuggets, fries, wings, chicken tenders or simply reheating. The temperature ranges from 105 F to 450 F, so you know the Ninja Air Fryer XL can cook your food fast, keep it moist and crispy. This kitchen must is easy to use, including recipes and a time guide for cooking. • The Ninja Air Fryer XL has 7 ways to make your food: Max Crisp, Air Fry, Air Roast, Air Broil, Bake, Reheat and Dehydrate. • A ceramic coating that is easy to clean makes up the “basket.” It is 5.5 quarts or about 3 lbs of wings, tater tots, etc. The cord is an okay length at 2.6ft and the wattage used is 1750. It also comes with a Broil rack to assist you. • When you cook with the Ninja Air Fryer make sure you have plenty of air space. The air is taken from the top, heated and then expelled from the rear vents. Once you are done cooking, cooling and cleaning the Ninja Air Fryer you won’t have any trouble putting under your cabinets. It also has a great tech look about it that will enhance any modernized kitchen. • I tried 2 different frozen foods with the Ninja Air Fryer. First up for cooking, was frozen tater tots. I really like tater tots but hate going through the hassle of making them in oven. So I made them in the Air Fryer on Max Crisp 450 F. No matter what your temperature is, allow for 3 mins of preheating. After reading the time and temperature (from start guide included), I put the frozen tater tots into the pre-heated “basket” at the bottom of the Air Fryer. I let the Air Fryer do its thing and cook the tater tots. It is recommended you check your food in the basket around every 3 mins. When I pulled out the “basket” the Air Fryer paused where I was at in cooking. Also worth mentioning is the fact the front of the Air Fryer is always cool in the front, so you won’t burn yourself when pulling out on the “basket” front handle. I was sure to mix up the tater tots so the bottom ones would not be burned and the top could cook evenly. It is recommended that you “shake” the “basket” around to mix up the food. I found that is ineffective. I used a pair of tongs and moved around my tater tots that way. It was much easier. I let it cook another 3 minutes and moved around the tater tots again. Another 3 mins passed and I checked on the tater tots and they were definitely done. Everything in the “basket” was cooked. While some tater tots were a little toasty and other were a little softer but cooked thoroughly. I tried my tater tots and was very satisfied, the Air Fryer worked great. • Next I cooked some frozen breaded chicken fingers in the Ninja Air Fryer. I put about 2 lbs of chicken tenders in the “basket” that was preheated for 3 mins at the temperatures of 390 F (this falls under the category of Air Fry). I checked on them in 3 mins and moved the chicken fingers around. Then I let them cook another 3 mins and moved the chicken fingers around again before putting back into the Air Fryer. 2 minutes later I pulled out the “basket” and the formerly frozen chicken fingers were now crisp, moist and required no oil. I am pretty impressed by Ninja Air Fryer. The chicken fingers tasted great and were easy to cook. • For cleaning, make sure that the “basket” is taken out and cooled off. Then use a little dish soap and water to clean the non-stick ceramic inside the “basket” which also housed the cooking plate. It is also worth mentioning that the Ninja Air Fryer is dishwasher safe, which is great news. Why is the Ninja Air Fryer XL so amazing in the kitchen? It pre-heats fast, cooks fast and the food tastes great. Although the Ninja Air Fryer XL is a larger countertop appliance, you should not have any trouble placing it in the kitchen. If you are tired of waiting for your oven to warm up or don’t want to use it in the summer, the Ninja Air Fryer XL is the answer. Frozen foods cook into crispy foods in no time. The convenience of cooking with air along, being dishwasher safe and a non-stick ceramic surface in the “basket” only add to the benefits of the Ninja Air Fryer XL AF161. If you are in the market for an Air Fryer, put this one at the top of your list.

Large Capacity Air Fryer Makes Great Fries

This is our first air fryer. We had heard good things about them so were excited to try this one. The Ninja Air Fryer Max XL is big! If you have a large family to cater for, this fryer should be more than enough. However, if like me you generally are only cooking for two, it is not that hard to adjust the cook times and still make some great, air fried food. I already said this is a big fryer but I think it is the height that is a slight annoyance. I have a fairly large kitchen but it really did not fit in any of the spaces I had available for storage. We moved some of our less used appliances upstairs to a utility room with well-spaced shelves but this may not be an option for everyone. You may have to leave it out somewhere as it is so tall and will not fit in many kitchen cupboards, as is. Enough of the negatives, how does it fry? It is fast and a lot easier and efficient than firing up the oven or broiler, I find. We could cook a half bag of oven fries in about 8 minutes (with 2-3 minutes of pre-heat) and a full bag was done within about 14 minutes. The oven would cook them in about 18-30 minutes but you would find the smaller fries a bit burned – we have yet to burn the fries in this air fryer. The fries are definitely a little drier than oven baking them but still delicious and crispy – my wife and I both enjoyed them and although maybe not a good thing, I find myself eating more of these than the oven baked fries. Hopefully the “healthier” tag still sticks? You can add a little oil or spray to get the food crispier but I haven’t felt I needed to do that yet. I may try it though just to see if it makes it any better. The fryer comes with a broiler rack and lots of recipes to broil and fry all sorts of other foods, other than fries but to be honest, I just wanted it to do healthier fries and have not yet tried the other cooking styles. It is very easy to set up and use and I especially like that cleanup is so simple. You pull out the insert that the food goes in, remove the crisper tray that sits at the bottom and then put both pieces in the dishwasher. They come out nice and clean and ready to cook again, which saves me dealing with a greasy, stick oven tray any more. The bulk of the fryer does not get dirty and might just need the odd wipe down now and again. It’s a great fryer and would do a larger family very well. It is perhaps a little overkill for a family of two like us but I like the flexibility if we have visitors staying. It seems very versatile, is easy to use and maintain and I would definitely recommend it.

First I want to say that I’m a pretty good cook, but I’m new to using an air fryer. I followed the directions completely and tried to make sweet potato fries and chicken tenders. I tried twice with the fries and they never browned, just burned. The chicken turned out dry as leather. I’m returning it.

Love my Ninja XL air fryer! I’ve had it for several months and I make all kinds of food in it: roasted potatoes, different veggies, meats, burgers from frozen, even use it for making toast and reheat frozen homemade waffles in bake mode. I use it almost every day. For food that’s lightweight, in air fry mode the blowing air moves the bread around so for toast use bake mode. Food like chicken thighs is crispier. I bought an instapot pot small round cake pan that fits inside the air fryer basket for when I add sauce or cheese like after I bake chicken breasts on the rack (which don’t dry out, BTW), then I can add marinara and mozzarella. It really is a mini oven and I rarely use my big oven now. The best thing: the basket and rack are nontoxic (no plastic smell like others) and dishwasher safe. I dishwasher it in the top rack. Recommended it to my sister who also uses hers all the time. I’m waiting for Ninja to make their dual air fryer baskets dishwasher safe (currently only the rack insert can be dishwasher), then I’ll buy the dual one.

Have already used this bad boy at least a dozen times since purchase. Washed it out of the box, dried and went to town. Cooks much faster than anticipated to a nice, crispy perfection. Have not tried burgers in it as of yet, but made the best Hillshire sausage I've ever had. Not much time to preheat. Not loud at all that others have mentioned. My instant-pot air fryer I had was much louder. Definitely has a hum to it, but very tolerable. Outside gets warm, but not hot to touch or anything. Have used all options except the dehydrate thus far and all results have been great. Very spacious. Eats up some counter space, but worth it. 100%

My first impression of the Ninja Air Fryer Max XL was how can something so small have such a large capacity! This isn't my first air fryer, but an upgrade to a cheaper one I purchased at the beginning of the year to see if we'd even use an air fryer at all. We found out we do, so hence the upgrade to a more all round, better fryer. My last one was a 5.2qt fryer, this Ninja is a 5.5qt, yet is has a much, much smaller footprint on the countertop than the previous one. That is a huge plus right there! Opening the box, a non-traditional battleship grey air fryer, as opposed to the most common black bodied appliances greets you. This is a 1750W machine. A simple power cord and instruction/recipe guide and that is about it to complete the unboxing. Plug it in, it beeps, the display lights up in a nice white on black and gets you ready to choose your settings. You have the choice of 'Max Crisp' - temp of 450F, 'Air Fry' - temp range of 300-400F, 'Air Roast' - temp range of 250-400F, 'Air Broil' - temp range of 400-450F, 'Bake' - temp range 250-400F, 'Reheat' - temp range of 270-400F and 'Dehydrate' - temp range of 105-195F. Once you've selected a mode, and the temperature within that mode, you can adjust the time to your suiting. Default appears to be 20 mins, but you can choose up and down from there to dial in exactly what you want. It's recommended to pre-heat the air fryer for about 3 mins before using, and in my experience, that really helps out a lot. First test was reheating some left over pizza. Not incredibly taxing for a machine like this! But, 2 slices fit nicely in there, hit 'Reheat' and then 2 mins. Yes, that's it, actually in less than 2 mins you have pizza reheated to perfection, with a nice crisp crust again, and soft toppings! Absolute perfection! Next test was fried chicken! Who doesn't love fried chicken!?! We chose to do unbreaded, fried chicken, a healthier option. Take the defrosted chicken breast, spray the smooth side with olive oil, then put your seasoning on. Place the ceramic coated air fryer plate in the bottom before pre-heating, then lay your chicken breasts seasoned side down on the plate. Spray the second side, and add seasoning. Set to 'Air Fryer' and we chose 360F as the cooking temp and set the time to 20 mins. Closed up and hit start. Fryer kicked into life and beeped to let us know all was well. After 10 mins, I pressed stop to check on the chicken and turn it over. I have found that this is a mistake. If you press 'Stop', the fryer resets itself. You then have to put all the settings back in (temp/time/mode) and start again. I then realized that the basket doesn't actually lock in place, so if you just open the basket without stopping the machine, it retains all it's settings, and when you close the basket again, it continues where it left off WITHOUT having to reset everything. Hopefully that nugget helps people out when using it. Once learned, that's how I'll always use it from now on. After another 10 mins on the other side, the chicken was nice and brown, a lovely golden brown color, but I needed to check that it was cooked through. Opened the basket, took out a chicken breast and cut into it. It was succulent and juicy and a lovely white color. I gave the chicken another 2 mins and it was absolutely perfect! Lovely and crispy on the outside and a soft juicy and incredibly tasty on the inside! Next test was store bought, frozen Garlic Bread. The air fryer has the capacity to put a whole box, that's 8x 1" thick slices of Garlic Bread into the basket. Now that's high capacity right there. Stand the Garlic Bread on it's end, so they are all upright in the basket. This allows the air to circulate around them and heat them evenly. After about 4 mins at 360F, check on them. The outer ones will brown slightly, move them to the center and then the center ones to the edges and continue for another 2-3 mins, they will have a perfect crunchy crust with a soft buttery center to them. Perfect! Next up - fresh cut fries. These are a little trickier. Once cut up as you wish, they need to be dry. Like super dry. If they have too much moisture in them, the air fryer will have a challenge to make them crispy, as all its trying to do to start with it dry them out, so the cooking time takes a lot longer than you imagine. I wasn't incredibly successful with home made fries on my first attempt, but have learned that they really do need to be as dry as possible before putting them into the fryer. Frozen veggie tots. Theses are a new 'simple favorite' of mine. Simply dump out a bag into the air fryer, set the temp to 390, and the timer for 12 mins. Every 3 mins or so, shake the basket to move them around a little (don't be too violent or they will break up), but they are self sufficient. Easy and ready to eat in about 12 mins. Perfect with that fried chicken from earlier! You can use the included broil rack to stack different foods to cook them at the same time. Very handy! And as equally good as the air fryer is at cooking, it is an absolute dream to clean up. Something my previous air fryer was not good at. When I cooked the fried chicken, looking in the bottom of the basket when done, there was black, burned chicken juice and oil spattered all over the basket. I even said to my wife 'oh no, what have we done, this is going to be miserable'. To my surprise, I just touched the burned area with a wooden spoon and it completely slipped off the surface of the basket. Once cooled down, I could literally wipe the inside of the basket out with a paper towel, the ceramic coating was that slick! It was ridiculously easy to clean, which makes using the Ninja Air Fryer Max XL so much more enjoyable, knowing that you don't have to worry about clean up afterwards. Add to that, that all internal components (basket, crisper plate and metal rack) are all dishwasher safe is incredible! You never have to worry about messy clean up with this machine! The included quick start/recipe guide is a nice addition to help you get started, but at the end of the day, experiment! This machine is very forgiving and gives you incredible results every time! Very impressed with this machine, it's build quality is top notch and its functionality surpasses my expectations of the machine. Cons: My only negatives in this review would be the two tone beeping, the first tone is fine, the second is a lot higher pitched and annoying, which is a personal thing, but something to be aware of. Secondly, when first out of the box, the basket was a little stubborn at coming out of the opening smoothly. After repeated use, it's becoming easier to get in and out, so maybe there was some extra molding plastic on the catch for the basket that is now wearing down, making it easier to get in and out. Also, be aware that in my experience, all air fryers get warm on the outside of the machine. This is normal, but make sure you have a good amount of space around the unit for air circulation. And keep the cord away from the unit when in use. Aside from those two things, I couldn't be happier with this Ninja Air Fryer Max XL!

Replaced our older GoWise with this one month before writing the review. Relative to the GoWise, the Ninja cooks better and faster. It makes things noticeably crisper. I has a great non-stick coating. Time will tell how long it lasts, but for now, it's extremely easy to clean. A couple other things that I like are that the capacity is good and the buttons are responsive. My only minor quibble at this point, is that it doesn't automatically pause and restart when you pull out the basket. Not really a huge deal, but got used to that feature with the GoWise.

We agonized over this purchase. I received so many positive comments about air fryers but my significant other was skeptical and wasn't excited about taking up more counter top space. We have not been able to use it as much as we would like but here is our results so far: Fresh cut French Fries: We overcooked them but they still turned out very good. Chicken Parm Breasts: Words cannot describe how great these turned out. Simply awesome. Fresh Burgers: Turned out awesome. Nice option instead of grilling. Frozen French Fries: Once again, simply awesome. Best fries I have ever had. We plan on trying frozen burgers in the next day or two. We like everything about the Ninja especially how easy to clean it is. Simply throw the bucket and plate in the dishwasher. It seems about the right size for our needs. I have two minor reservations. As others have mentioned, the fan is a shade loud when cooking. Also the inside of the bucket gets very hot quickly so you need to be a bit careful when flipping or tossing food. The edges can be hot. Without these two reservations I would have given the Ninja XL 5 stars.

This was my first experience using an air fryer. Living in a warmer climate I really like the idea that this doesn't heat up the kitchen anything like a conventional oven would. Pretty impressive given that the air fryer goes up to 450 degrees. The ceramic-coated, nonstick basket is plenty big enough at 5.5 quarts. It's a plus that the basket and accessories are dishwasher safe. The Ninja Air Fryer Max XL has an enhanced control panel of multiple preset programs such as max crisp, air fry, air roast, air broil, bake, reheat and dehydrate; in addition to up and down buttons for temp and time. Each preset program per Ninja is set to have optimized fan speeds for better results. One of the first items we tried was chicken breasts. Pre-heated the air fryer for three minutes as per the instructions and then placed the two chicken breasts in the basket. We flipped them once during cooking and then enjoyed the results. Chicken turned out moist and thoroughly cooked. The frozen French fries we cooked had a nice crisp exterior. We have really liked the convenience of the reheat button. Chicken wings that we brought home from a restaurant were quickly heated all the way through. I'm looking forward to trying roasted cauliflower and brussel sprouts recipes. I'd note that cooking times are usually a range so one has to keep an eye on items that they don't get overcooked or too crispy. It is very easy to just pull the basket out by the handle and then stop or proceed with cooking based on the desired doneness one wants. The air fryer fan will turn off when the basket is removed and then resume once pushed back in. The air fryer uses very little oil so it does seem to be a much healthier option than conventional fryers (75% less fat per Ninja). The applicance has a minimal footprint so it doesn't take up a lot of counterspace. I'm looking forward to finding some additional recipes online to experiment with the Ninja Air Fryer Max XL. Multiple family members also enjoy their air fryers and have mentioned multiple sources for recipes. We're glad that we chose to add this air fryer to our collection of kitchen appliances. It looks to be one that will get lots of use due to it's convenience and great results.

Takes frying to the next level! We’ve tried all sorts of things like wings, somosas, fish, nuggets, chicken drumsticks and quarters..they all came out perfect. Now does it taste fried? Not exactly, but hey it comes close to it and it’s healthier! Easy clean up. Fits about 6-8 drumsticks and about 3-4 salmon 4-6 oz pieces. Love it so far! We would’ve gotten the double fryer with two baskets but it takes up too much space.

Super happy with this purchase. The “fryer drawer” and rack inside are dishwasher safe. I’ve never felt that the fryer handle was hot when I pick it up. The setting is easy to use but I usually just use the air fry option. The size is really good because the benefit of an air fryer is cooking speed. Anything smaller than this would likely mean you have to batch cook the dish. We only have two people in our household but I wouldn’t go smaller than this size. This makes heating up frozen food like tater tots or fried chicken taste so much better and you do it in like half the time of baking. Follow the instructions, pre heat it for a few min, shake it a little in between cooking etc. and you’ll be rewarded with quick, tasty, crispy good food!
