If you're like me, what you expect to see when you look at an Ultimate Ears speaker is a cylindrical brightly colored unit, almost garish in its color choices. They sound great but are usually on the small-to-medium size side of things. Enter the UE Hyperboom. This device looks unlike anything else in the UE catalog. It is not cylindrical, it is not brightly colored, and it's massive. The unit is over a foot tall and is rather hefty. They do market this as a portable device, and fortunately they were thinking about it when they said that. There's a beefy rubber strap attached to the side that collapses flat to the unit when not in use. Something else that this has going for it over UE's other offerings is the connectivity. Of course it is bluetooth, and it even has an aux jack for standard audio cables, however this takes it a step further with an optical jack. You might ask why this is on a unit like this, can it really support the quality that an optical jack provides? I can say unequivocally, yes. What's interesting about that as a connectivity option is TVs. Most of us are familiar with sound bars for TVs, but some of us, and I've been in this situation, just dont have a place to put the sound bar for whatever reason. The form factor of this, being vertical standing (btw, this is ONLY vertical standing, the feet are on the bottom of the end of the unit, there are no feet on the sides) could potentially lend itself to a situationally better position than many sound bars because of their form factor. And it falls within the price range of equivalent sounding sound bars as well (this probably gets louder). Which brings me to the point of the sound. First and foremost, this thing gets LOUD. It is marketed as a party speaker, and you can literally have a party with it all by itself. On medium settings within 10 feet of the unit the volume can approach painful levels, so jacking it up to the max would be nigh on earth-shattering. I can really appreciate this because so many speakers say they can or should be used outdoors, but once you get them outside they fall flat without walls to bounce the sound off of. There's no chance of that with this unit. On top of that, if you're really crazy, it is compatible with pairing with other UE devices to create a truly multidimensional and immersive experience. I dont have any other UE devices, but it definitely sounds like it would be fun to do. The sound quality is fantastic. Due to the size of the unit they really did not have to skimp on the size of the speakers. One of the most important things about speakers, particularly as it relates to bass and midrange speakers is the size. Some units claim to have "booming bass" but those same units are no larger than your hand. This device has a true subwoofers in it, and they deliver. The mids and highs are impressive too, as again, a device of this size does not have to skimp. An important note on the size of those speakers is that it also means at high levels they are less likely to distort. I can attest that when I jacked the volume way up, the device was still exceptionally clear. On top of it all, the device is splash proof. I wouldn't drop it in the pool or anything, but it should still be safe to use outdoors and you'll be alright if it gets a bit moist. Really in all of this I only have one negative comment. The sound is definitely directional. Most of the UE devices taut 360' sound. The sound from the Hyperboom definitely comes out of the front two sides (the side opposite the hand strap). The cutaway view on the UE website shows the internals and direction of those speakers, so positioning will be important. Honestly, with as loud as this thing gets, it's really being nit-picky, because you wont have any trouble hearing it from behind. This thing is fantastic. Just understand that it is not small, so portable means take it with you, put it on a table and get out of the way. You won't want to carry it around with you. I've uploaded an image of it next to a first generation Amazon Echo just so you understand what you are getting. By the way. These are not competing products. The UE Hyperboom is not a smart speaker (which I actually appreciate, I think too many devices have 'smart' functionality built in where they don't need it) and the Amazon Echo is not portable.

I like to think I start parties. THIS starts the party! No really, this speaker not only looks nice but can get loud as well. Design With big buttons atop the speaker and mesh type material surrounding the physical speakers, you can tell thought went into the design. The tactile volume buttons are a nice touch! Drinks can be placed on it and you wouldn't have to worry about the speaker getting wet or the drinks tipping over. Of the design changes made, I loved how it includes a rubber strap on the side that makes it easier to transport around since it is larger than the UE Megaboom or your typical smaller type portable speakers. Another design touch I noticed was the rubber at the bottom of the speaker. Its a nice touch to keep it from scratching or hearing a loud thud when placing it on the floor or a countertop. Audio Out of the box, I like the current audio configuration; not overly boomy from the bass in songs and it can hit highs without fatiguing your ears. When playing songs at the highest volume, I did not get any distortion. This speaker can definitely fill up large room and even a house! Is it a replacement for your DJ equipment for music at dance halls? Definitely not, but it's not meant to be. Although larger than most portable speakers and the UE Megaboom, the speaker drivers sure compensate for it with the ability to play music for over 20 hours and play it multidirectional. With it being square, you can place it on the floor and expect to hear music from behind and the sides of the speaker. Features The Boom and MegaBoom by UE app is great; a user can turn the speaker off/on, change the volume, and change the EQ settings of the speaker right from their phone. If you prefer more bass, you can change it from the app too. It also comes with an adaptive EQ setting that I found to play music to my liking also. A cool feature added was the ability to connect multiple devices to it and play music from each device (one at a time). No more passing the phone or device around to switch songs! Another thing I particularly liked of the Hyperboom was that it had multiple inputs (digital, aux) and even a USB out for the ability to charge devices as well. Overall This speaker does well at checking the right boxes - portable but powerfully sounding speaker, water resistant, and super long battery life. This will last for years to come and that is the reason why I recommend it over others.

    Party speaker

I researched for about two weeks before I purchased this beast. The Ultimate Ears Hyperboom has had me feeling like a kid getting what he wanted for Christmas. I couldn't be happier with what I got. Yeah four hundred bucks is a lot, but I've always found you get what you pay for... Where do I even start, first off the quality of sound that comes out is incredible, at any level there is absolutely no distortion. Bass is the kind that you feel in your chest. If you happen to be right next to it when it's cranked up full blast it is actually uncomfortable, you have to literally yell to talk or else you can't be heard. App was easy to download, with this it makes controlling the speaker a snap. With four different ways to play music. It is definitely versatile. The optical cable can connect to your favorite game/movie on the TV. PARTY speaker to the max with 2 bluetooth ports. Everyone knows how annoying it is to have silence in the middle of a party because someone's playlist has got to go. This all goes away, seemless with crossfade even... Auxiliary is there as well if you want wired. Usb port is on this thing as well, which allows you to charge your phone if it is dying. Not too heavy at 13lbs to take and set up a mini concert where ever you are. I truly have enjoyed having this speaker all week and the battery life is ridiculous 24 hours is correct even at critical battery this thing still plays loud I would recommend anybody who wants the baddest speaker on the planet to buy this speaker. I plan on buying more Ue products to multi-connect all around my house to play in stereo no matter where I'm at. Being splash proof when the ports aren't exposed is a definite plus as well. UE has got sound down to a science and I can't find ANY reason to not be happier with this purchase. Big thanks to the awesome team that created this truly one of a kind speaker that will be bumping for years to come... Sincerely one satisfied lifetime customer

    Another hit from Ultimate Ears!

I had read many good reviews for months about UE products, so finally for Christmas I got my first, the Megaboom 3. It did not disappoint. Then a couple months later, UE releases the Hyperboom, so I started reading reviews from customers and tech reviews, concerned mostly that it was a little pricey. Let's face it, $400 is alot to drop for a bluetooth speaker! After a month of it being on the shelves, I decided I had to have it. And the Hyperboom as well did not disappoint! To let you know up front, it is a large speaker and bulky, not just something you're gonna throw into your backpack. If you want that, stick with the Megaboom 3. But it's not so large that you cant bring along to the next tailgate or pool party, in fact...its the perfect speaker for those because it's the speaker that you can actually HEAR with a large group of people or in a large area. Anything smaller minimizes the music in the room to barely background noise, where the Hyperboom brings the music back where you want it to be, front and center...commanding attention, hyping the mood, supporting the exact reason to even take a speaker along in the first place. And it also pairs easily with my megaboom 3, so if I put them on opposite sides of the house and pair them I have music through the whole house, easily. If you love your music, then your music needs the Hyperboom. And if you don't have ANY of the Ultimate Ears speakers yet, please do yourself a huge favor and go buy yourself one of them...it doesn't have to be as high priced as the Hyperboom to understand that Ultimate Ears makes quality speakers in many sizes for many different occasions, and once you hear your favorite song on one of their speakers, never again will you want to hear it on another speaker, it just can't compare...I'm hooked, I'm glad I invested the $400 on my happiness, and I will never use another brand of speaker again. I've given away or sold my Bose sound link 2, my sound core flare, my jbl charge 3 and 4 and also my jbl flip 4.

Hyperboom first impressions Vs JBL Boombox 2

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

First off, here are the two main things about this speaker. 1) It gets loud with very good acoustics. 2) It is heavy. 13lbs doesnt seem like alot, but when carrying a portable speaker AROUND, it gets heavy fast. However, this is a great speaker to get the party started! Play it in the house around 80%, and it will have your guests shouting to each other while conversating. Outside it can easily carry an outside pool party, BBQ, or small gathering at the beach or park. Right up front, the sound of the UE Hyperboom is better than the JBL Boombox 2. The sound on the UE is more clear and crisp in the mids and highs. The voice has more clarity, and the bass has more punch, than BOOOOM that the JBL seems tuned for. The JBL sorta sounds great, and has some nice bass, but the vocals seem slightly muffled. From a distance the UE still sounds clean and you can still feel the punch. The JBL seems to soften up from the same distance (about 25'). From a style perspective, the JBL looks like it belongs outside. The larger handle makes it easy to carry and looks sorta cool as a huge portable speaker. However, the UE speaker looks more sleek, sorta like a piece of modern furniture. Very clean minimalist look, but also sorta boring (IMO). The strap on the speaker is very solid, but is also made of rubber. I'm sure it will last a few years, but it is also a stress point everytime I pick it up. Lets hope it becames a replacable part after a few years. If your moving this speaker from one room to another or the backyard, the handle shouldnt be a problem and makes it convieniant to move throughout your home. However, if you were to planning on taking this to a beach or a park, etc I would probably just place in a large student back pack and use as a carrying case. It is just not very comfortable to carry for extended periods. So although this is technically a portable speaker because of the rubber grab strap, the awkward shape and heft are something to consider. Another observation is that if you charging the speaker, their is not light indicator on the front of the speaker. The only indication you get is from a small LED light located on the back of the speaker near the charger. Despite these things I mentioned, at the end of the day a speaker should be heard and not seen (so much). Because of that I focused on the sound quality which the UE speaker outperformed. The multi Bluetooth connection between guests phones is also a nice touch, but both people must have the UE app to support the seamless changing between the different playlists. For me this speaker is a great house party speaker because it looks like it belongs in the house. However, because of its great sound and grab strap it can also moonlight as a backyard or outdoor speaker from time to time. I havent tried to connect to my TV yet, but plans to use as a sound bar in the near future will help add to the value, and the sleek design will be at home near my TV. I would gladly reccommend this speaker to anyone looking for next level sound beyond the basic 10" tube style most of us have become familiar with. The sound is amazing, loud and clear. The multiple connection options make it the clear winner over its competitors.

Every thing on this party speaker is big from its sound to its size and in this party speakers case it definitely works. This is a premium quality speaker from its material to the quality of sound it produces. I tested this speaker with different ranges of music there was no distortion at all even with the volume turned up all the way. This party speaker is a multi-function device. It can charge your phone while playing your favorite music at the same time. This speaker also comes with a variety of inputs incase you want to hook it up to something else. The only thing I was not a fan of was the weight. This speaker does have bit of heft to it but it is portable at the sametime. + Craftmanship + Material ++ Sound quality + Features - Weight

This speaker is awesome. I own the Bose SoundLink, JBL extreme and UE Megaboom just to name a few. For me, it was the Jawbone Big Jambox that started it all. It was the first bluetooth speaker which really impressed me sound-wise, but the speaker had it's flaws. The Hyperboom represents the biggest update to bluetooth speakers since the Big Jambox. The sound is massive. The speaker itself is massive. I bought it mainly to use as our main speaker to use with our projector. Our projector setup is somewhat portable. We currently have it setup in our formal living room, but we have setup it up in the back yard, even in hotel rooms on the go. Anyway, this speaker works really well for that use case. The speaker is thoughtfully designed. My only gripe is that it's really bass heavy. So much so that at medium to high-volumes, to me, it sounds muddy. Thanks to it's customizable EQ (iOS app), it can be adjusted. I reduced the bass on mine and now it sounds really crisp and balanced. To be honest, UE should have shipped with this EQ setting and allowed for bass boost for bass lovers. Don't get me wrong, I love bass, but not when it's not defined. Favorite features: - You can turn the speaker on and off via the IOS app - Speaker has 2 bluetooth inputs/channels - You can adjust all speaker functions including EQ even if you are connecting to it via Line in - as we do with our projector - Seems well-built I think in time this will become cheaper. For now, $399 is fair. It's not a steal by no means.

Good Portable Speaker, Potential To Be Great

The Ultimate Ears Hyperboom is so close to being awesome it kills me. It's well built, simple to use, sounds great, gets loud and clear, can go a whole day on a single charge, can charge your USB devices, is easy to carry, looks great, and is splash proof so I can bring it to the pool party with confidence. So why am I down on it? Simple. It won't hook up to my phone. Yes, I have an older phone (LG V20) which could be the issue, but I've never had an issue with the bluetooth connecting to a device. From cars, to headsets, to speakers, to headphones, to printers, to computers, to tablets, to my smartwatch, the bluetooth on my phone has never given me an issue, yet with the Hyperboom it does. They'll pair up just fine, but as soon as I play any audio the bluetooth on my phone crashes and is forced to restart only to keep reconnecting and crashing as soon as another sound is played. I've tried clearing my bluetooth data and cache, and reinstalling the UE Boom app, but nothing fixes it. Which is a shame, because I've connected the Hyperboom to other devices and it sounds great and would be awesome to use, if only it would work with my main device. It's a new release, so I'm hoping a firmware update will be out soon to clear this up. Could easily be the star of a few parties after the covid19 outbreak clears and I envision a lot of fun days at the beach with this speaker, but only if I can connect to it wirelessly. However, if you're in the majority that don't own an LG V20, you're in luck! Aside from the V20 bluetooth failure, I'm happy to say the bluetooth connects perfectly with the iPhone XR, Lenovo Tab2 Android tablet, and Alienware R9 Windows 10 PC. The latency seems low as I don't notice any delay in the audio when playing corresponding video. This means that it'll also make a good multimedia speaker, and I'm already excited about pairing it up with my Mars projector and a laptop for outdoor movie and game nights. With a battery that's rated for 24 hours on a single charge, and realistically probably 6 hours blasting it outside, the Hyperboom can go about a whole day on a single charge and only takes about 2.5 hours for a full recharge. What's nifty is that UE includes a USB port to charge your devices to ensure the party keeps going. The port is for charging devices only, so no playing mp3s off a flash drive, but it's hard to complain about inputs when there's 4 included. The Hyperboom has 1 optical, 1 auxiliary 3.5mm, and 2 bluetooth inputs. It's a bit odd to find an optical audio input on a portable bluetooth speaker, yet with the size, volume, and sound quality of this speaker, I think it reinforces the notion that Ultimate Ears envisioned this as a multimedia speaker. Optical makes an easy hook up to a Playstation, Xbox, laptop, or cable box for clean digital audio. And while I couldn't wirelessly connect my phone to the Hyperboom, it sounded great connected through the headphone jack, especially since I get to take advantage of the V20's 32bit Quad DAC hooked up this way. Visually, the Hyperboom is an attractive 14" tall black square with rounded edges. If you're an audiophile, it looks a lot like the Definitive Technology BP tower speakers, but obviously shorter and with matte surfaces. It's a high quality finish that's attractive without being flashy and should fit in with any decor. I especially love the hidden handle at the back corner. It's thick, sturdy, hides well and should hold up for a long time. Feeling along the speaker fabric, you'll notice all the speakers are protected by a sturdy cage so you can have peace of mind carrying it around without accidentally damaging a speaker cone. Great job UE engineers! If you're connecting the Hyperboom to an Android or iOS device, definitely download the UE Boom app. It could use some work, but it unlocks a 5 band EQ and an adaptive EQ feature. While this isn't needed to play audio through the speaker, the customizable frequency settings definitely help cater the audio to your liking. So, how's it sound? Fantastic! I think the bass extension is going to depend on the setting you're in, but a single speaker is plenty loud enough to power a casual patio party or cookout. The bass response is a lot more full and balanced indoors, but it'll play loud and clear just about anywhere and it def gets loud. Feed it good quality audio and it'll surprise you with its range and balance. However for a speaker in this price range and quality, I'm disappointed it doesn't use the high quality aptX bluetooth codec. Overall, I want to love this speaker, because it's likely a firmware update away from being great, but for now, it is what it is. 3.5 stars with a potential for 5. Make sure it connects with your device before buying it, and if it does, you have a great sounding, versatile, wireless, portable speaker.

I bought the Hyperboom speaker 33 days ago from Best Buy. I didnt purchase the additional $99 dollar insurance which would have put the total sale at $500 bucks!!! After just 33 days, the screw holding the strap came off and the speaker fell on my ankle and then to ground sustaining a lot of damage. Best Buy only covers you for 15 days. Buyer BEWARE!!! This strap to carry the speaker is a FLAWED design. Do not buy until they change the design.

After testing several models I chose this one as it had the best overall sound IMHO. When all of the reviews say this thing gets loud, they aren't kidding. Even when turned up the sound is clean, with plenty of low bass to satisfy most audiophiles. The Bluetooth connectivity works flawless and the unit holds a very long charge. While some other models have some other bells and whistles, this one had the best sound. If you are looking for great sound, portability, and solid materials and workmanship, then this is the one for you!

Day 3 review. This speaker could be so much more. I have 2 UE megaboom speakers and they all connect through party up feature in the UE app. BUT - on its own it just isn’t loud enough for how big and heavy it is. The current full volume should be about half volume. .. meaning: it should get twice as loud. My Harmon Kardon Onyx is almost the same volume but def less bass. After the 1st full charge I have been plying it quite a bit for two days and the battery is at 70% still - which is blowing my mind. Pros: Long lasting battery Great bass! Omnidirectional sound. Great controls Lots of inputs even optical input Cons Heavy Only gets down to 45herts For its size weight and price it is way too quiet Final con is the bottom front corner should be coated in rubber or the whole bottom of speaker. When carrying it by the handle the speaker tilts forward and when I try to set it down on hardwood floor or other slippery surface it won’t ‘grab’ and it wants to fall over. You have to kind of swing it forward or flat onto the little rubber feet to get it to grip. It’s a great speaker. I wish it got louder. Sound is much richer that my other Bluetooth speakers. Easy to set up and use.

I was looking for a speaker to travel to use at hotels with a good bass sound. I usually traveled with the Apple speakers but got annoying with the Wi-Fi connection and home app etc so complicated where your traveling . This is pretty neat, I like it. I don’t love it because it’s a bit heavy for luggage on planes but made arrangements but other than that sound is great I love that it’s Bluetooth which is what I was looking for. Love that it’s chargeable and can use wireless to move around outdoors. Charge lasts a while depending on how much you use it. Right now I only use it when I shower so it’ll last couple days before it needs to connect and it will play while connected to outlet as well so that’s great too.

This thing is huge. It sounds huge. And it sounds very clean. I was stuck between this and the JBL boom box and found a distinct difference. The JBL has heavier lows but this UE speaker has a more balanced frequency response at all volumes and sounds cleaner overall. The downside is that the material is a fabric mesh rather than a hard durable plastic/metal and it’s not waterproof. I’d say that with most music, you’ll get a balanced sound, and the app allows you to Bass Boost, and it’s not overpowering like Sony. With that said, great speaker. No regrets, it’s apparently 200watts+ Peak and I couldn’t disagree with that, it pushes more power than my Marantz AVR. I like the feature in the app that allows you to power it on and off without touching the unit. If you are within 100 feet, it toggles power over BTLE, without a noticeable battery drain. Comes with a 90W barrel charger and supports 96KHz over optical, and my TV claimed it was encoding Dolby Digital, which this thing was plying just fine. It’s my new go-to for outdoor movie nights, and at 90% volume, lasted through a 2 hour movie with half the battery left, not too shabby. Unlike the other UE speakers, this is directional, but it does separate left and right channels in their respective directions 90 degrees apart with woofers on the opposite sides behind the unit. Fills up not only a room but a whole house. The microphone also is great for compensating indoors and outdoors; I’ve only seen this equalization in JBL, and even the , it’s a manual button rather than active adaptation. Pick it up, you won’t regret it.

Hi MasterEL, we're glad to see you're loving the big sounds of the Hyperboom! This speaker is the best and one of my favorites! Even though it has the mesh fabric, its still splashproof! If you have some of the other UE speakers, be sure to connect them with your Hyperboom. Continue to enjoy and happy listening!

The best portable speaker i have owned and have yet to find one that matches this one in terms of sound to the size of it. the display model they have at the stores does not do it justice. when you get in the software and mess with the equalizer or even set adaptive equalizer on, this thing really pops. keep in mind, there is a bug with having 2 of these things and using them together. the sound is delayed and is especially annoying if trying to karaoke or watch a movie that way. will work perfectly if only connected to one speaker though so perfect for its intended use

The best pound for bass portable Bluetooth speaker out there! These speakers pack a serious punch into a small 7.5” by 7.5” footprint, and reaching just 14.5” tall. With an amazing battery life, you can party at full volume, for close to 8 hours. Weighing just over 13lbs, these portable speakers can be linked as a pair in TWS stereo, or add multiple speakers from the Ultimate Ears Boom family (Megaboom and Boom) and create an incredible sound stage wherever you want; beach, tailgate, pool side etc etc… They’re rugged and well built, and can take a splash, just not a dip in the pool.

Feel The Bass - This speaker rocks. Last time I bought a speaker was about 8 years ago and even though that thing still hits (Beats Boombox), I felt it was time to treat myself LOL. I did my homework and originally bought the Party Box On The Go which is a super fun, cool, good sounding speaker but with 2hr battery life (super not okay!!). So did a little bit more homework, came down to this HyperBoom, Bose Pro S1, or JBL Boombox. So so glad I chose the Hyperboom, I've never even heard of the brand before but it sounds fantastic, hits the lows like dang near a home theater sounding bass! Gets loud but not super loud, I mean enough to blast through a house anyways. Battery life is great and build quality is good. Can turn the speaker off from the app, app also has a pretty good EQ with multiple pre-sets if you dont want to play with it. Speaker is a tad bit heavy, also no cases whatsover available for it, and the speaker is on the pricey side but in my opinion well worth it. Definitely would recommend and would buy again....hope this sucker last me another 8years!
