    All-in-1 Indoor Grill Works Great

I should say up front that I received this item for purposes of review. And, I'm not going to lie, I haven't eaten this well in a while. The steaks alone made this a great item to review. The thermometer made cooking steaks extremely easy. The onscreen display tracked the progress of the steaks and let me know when they were ready to rest at my desired level of doneness. The air crisper produced crispy and hot french fries in a fraction of the time of a traditional oven. Somethings that I learned and weren't obvious to me up front: 1. Avoid using olive oil as it can produce more smoke. Instead use canola, coconut, or vegetable oil. 2. If you plan on using the thermometer, make sure your meat is thick enough for the thermometer to be effective. I tried using the thermometer on some thinner hamburger patties and the machine thought they were done when they clearly weren't. 3. If you should need more time or need to turn the device back-on, you can skip preheating by holding down on the preheat button. 4. Make sure that the FoodieXL has its own dedicated power outlet and that it is on a 15 amp circuit breaker. I wish there was a bit more space for grilling and air frying at the same time, but as it is, this is a large unit. It takes up approx. 15 inches by 15 inches of spaces with a height around a foot. It's going to need a decent amount of counter space or closet space for storage. Ninja sells a roaster rack and a combination air frying and grilling rack, but sadly they don't come included by default. Be sure to check out the ninja website for accessory options. The device is loud, but I didn't think it was much louder than my stove's exhaust fan. Using the approved oils, I never noticed much if any smoke. The food tasted great. If you have the space and are interested in an indoor grill / air fryer combo, the FoodieXL is easy to recommend!

    Indoor Grilling Done Right

The Ninja Foodi Smart XL 6-in-1 indoor grill is another combo unit from Ninja that aims to take the place of several kitchen appliances. Its main function is as a smokeless indoor grill, but also has the ability to air fry, roast, bake, broil, and dehydrate. This isn’t my first Ninja Foodi Combo unit, so I had some expectations out of the grill. My prior experience was positive, and I enjoyed the versatility of a combo unit, so I was excited to try out the grill. The XL Grill comes with the main unit (obviously), a 6 qt baking/roasting pan, a 9x12” grill grate, a 4 qt crisper basket, smart thermometer, cleaning brush, and recipe book. All cooking surfaces are nonstick, which makes cleanup less of a hassle. The interface is 100% touchscreen, which is surprisingly responsive and information packed. There are no knobs or physical buttons to clean up – just wipe down the touchscreen. The unit itself is quite large and will certainly take up some counter space when its in use. Since I have been using it so often I have just left it on my counter for the time being. This is not the long term solution for me because it really limits my already crowded counterspace. The XL Grill comes with a number of additional features to assist your cooking. It comes with a number of presets that utilize the smart thermometer – presets for beef, chicken, pork, and fish. After you select your protein you select your doneness level, which is determined by the thermometer (inserted into the center of your cut). Ninja also claims a couple of other features – smoke free grilling, and no need to flip. In my time with the XL Grill I have used it to air fry, grill, dehydrate, and bake. For grilling I made cheeseburgers and bbq chicken breasts. I followed along with the presets for the chicken, and the burgers to try them out. I think my chicken was sliced a little thin because it got a little dry, but that’s just a minor adjustment. The burgers went along pretty well also. I was a little thrown by the need to not flip. I made some burgers with a flip and some without. The burgers I flipped were well done, the burgers I didn’t were medium well (the setting I chose). So I guess the claim of not needing to flip holds up when you use the preset. I also made a few patties in manual mode, which did require me to flip it for my own piece of mind. These came out just fine with nice grill marks on both sides. The grilling surface itself is fairly large. I managed to cook 6 average size burgers at one time – it was crowded but doable. Since the grill is the main function of this unit I felt it was important that I test it out the most. I made 12 grilled chicken breast filets and 14 cheeseburgers (lots of people in the household), and it held up to the task quite well. The smoke free grilling was also not an exaggeration. I melted the cheese on the first batch of burgers, and had some runoff. By the second batch the cheese was totally burnt down in the grill grate pattern, and by the third batch it was carbonized. I never had a hint of smokiness in my house, which definitely would have happened in my stovetop grill pan. For the air fryer I just did some French fries. These came out just fine, and were comparable to my Ninja Foodi Tendercrisp (pressure cooker/air fryer combo). The benefit over my other unit was the size of the air fryer basket. It holds twice as much food, which is really beneficial. I did the air fryer the same night as the burgers, so I did have to experience the changeover of cooking methods, but it’s not the end of the world. The burgers cooked very quickly so the fries didn’t have a lot of time to cool off. There is half size basket available on Ninja’s website which would allow you to cook on the grill surface and do your air fry needs at roughly the same time. I used the dehydrate setting to make a big batch of jerky. I tried out different cook times to find the right setting. My cuts were about ¼” thick, and I used a fairly wet marinade. The recommended times were 5-7 hours. 7 hours ended up drying out too much, so a second batch was done at 6 hours. This batch was much better, so definitely do a test run with your jerky to get a feel for the cook time. For baking I made some brownies in the bottom pan. It was pretty straightforward on the bake time. Recipe used a 9 x 13 pan, and this pan is closer to 9 x 12, so I just increased the cook time a bit. They came out great, so I was happy with the result. As far as interacting with the XL Grill it was fairly easy to navigate as long as you read the manual for the cook type you planned to use. I did the same thing for awhile with my Tendercrisp, but stopped needing the manual after the 3rd or 4th time. The cookbook is invaluable though as it gives you estimated times for different cooking settings (grill, air fry, and dehydrate). I have made at least on of the recipes from the book – the honey mustard and bbq glazed chicken breast. It was pretty tasty, so I’d be happy to make that on again. There were a couple of pain points while interacting with the grill. We kept turning the grill off when we were trying to start a new cycle (think putting on the second batch of burgers). It wasn’t perfectly clear from the touchscreen interface if it had started the grilling routine yet. We did this 5 or 6 times at least, and it would have been nice if there was a prompt saying that it had started again. You do get used to it, but that was a bit annoying when we kept making the same mistake. I haven’t had a chance to try out the roast and broil functions yet, but I’d assume they work just as well as the other settings. I also haven’t used any frozen meat yet. My experience with using frozen meat in the Tendercrisp was positive, so I’d assume if you follow Ninja’s instruction here, you will have a nice result. Overall, I’m really happy with the performance of the XL Grill. It holds up well to a lot of food being cooked on it. The presets let you set and forget (more or less), and the cook type options really expand the versatility of the unit. I know heating up this small appliance for cooking smaller things is way more efficient than heating up my entire oven (also keeps my kitchen cooler).

I like it but it kind of cooks to high for the setting especially when you have a great steak on the grill and it overcooks it. I like it but it’s not my favorite.

Great Results & Easy Clean Up

My aunt lives with me and normally does the cooking. I am a novice and she has been cooking for decades, but we both love this appliance. I found it easy to get good results the first time using the automatic selections. She was not so keen on some of the automatic features, but the results it delivers are undeniably great regardless of how you got there. Pros + Excellent results for everything food we have made so far (check out the pictures)! + Grilled burgers, corn and steaks came out with a good crust, but still juicy on the inside. + Air fried zucchini, frozen fish sticks and tater tots came out crispy and evenly cooked. + Cooking greasy items does not make a big mess, because fat is drained into a lower pan and the lid prevents splatter and cuts down on the smell. + Automatic preheating tells you when you should add food and it prompts you to flip items you are grilling - this ensures that you get some pretty decent grill marks on steaks and even cooking even for the novice. + Opening the lid pauses cooking so you don't get blasted with hot air. + It really does hold a good amount of food. We were able to grill 3 strips steaks and one rib-eye at the same time. The air fryer basket is wide, but not as deep as some other air fryers - this really helped the air circulate around the food and yielded better results that my regular air fryer. + Quality construction - solid feel and weight to the pans, grill plates, and hinges. + Non-stick works well and makes clean up easy. The instructions indicate the pans, screen and grill plate are dishwasher safe, but a quick rinse with warm soapy water is all that is needed. + Large display easy to read display for temperature and mode indicators. + The built-in temperature probe makes cooking meats to temperature super easy and the probe is stored in a compartment right on the side - so you will not lose it. I set the automatic temperature mode for med-well beef and it cooked the steaks perfectly. Things to Consider (no deal breakers here - just words of wisdom) + Storage - Either the air fryer basket (and pan) or grill plate (and pan) must be stored separately - it holds only one set at a time. It is XL, meaning that it does have some weight and may be too deep to store on some shelfs (like the ones in my pantry). This is a trade-off for the amount of food it can cook. I didn't find it hard to move around, but I would not want to have to lift it on to a high shelf either. + Some aspects of operation can be confusing, and I recommend reading the instructions carefully before you use it. While the automatic features and temperature probe are great, there are a couple of things that can be frustrating especially for those who prefer appliances with knobs: + The smooth display is easy to clean, but there is no feedback besides a soft beep that some people may have trouble hearing. When you change a setting, the display continues to flash for a few seconds and then locks in the setting with a beep - there is no "enter" key. + You cannot cook based on time and use the temperature probe to see a meat's temperature (the probe temperature is only displayed when you have it set to cook to a certain temperature). Hitting the temperature mode button causes it to switch to this mode and you cannot go back to the time without starting over. + If you want to cook something longer after the timer has expired or the set temperature has been reached it will make you start over again. It will try to preheat again and make you open the lid to add food - even if your food is in there and the grill is already hot. You can tap the flashing preheat indicator to skip preheat, then just open and close the lid to get it going, but it leaves you wanting an "add a minute or resume" button. Side Note - The included recipe book has an entry for hamburgers with instructions to use the "beef automatic setting". It should be noted that "done" is not the same for steak as it is for ground beef. If you try this recipe, consider using manual temperature mode set at 160F (recommended safe temperature for ground beef). You can adjust it up or down but start there - even well-done items came out juicy on this grill. Conclusion - The touch based / automatic controls may be frustrating for some, but even in manual mode it cooks better than any other indoor grill or air fryer I have tried. It is a quality appliance and every Ninja product I have had has been extremely reliable. I would recommend it and may end up buying another one for my mom.

First Impression and the bottom-line is I really like the Ninja Foodi Smart XL Grill and Air Oven. From the moment I unpacked the oven to our first meal that evening I was won over. A rewarding experience, to evaluate a product that captures one’s attention and covers all the bases of its intended role in today’s contemporary kitchen. The Ninja Foodi is brilliantly designed, engineered, solidly built, and implemented. The style and quality perfectly match its cousin the Ninja 8 qt Pressure Cooker. They make Fabulous Bookends on our kitchen counters. Preparing meals with the Ninja Foodi XL Air Oven and the 8 qt Pressure Cooker in the kitchen I envision a day that is free of the traditional oven and certainly in a kitchenette. Space and energy saving. Setup of the Ninja Oven is simple. Basically, you set the oven on the counter remove the accessories read the instructions look up a favorite meal in the Ninja Foodi Smart XL Grill recipe book plug in and start cooking. Truly quite easy with astonishing results. Note on Foodi Smart Thermometer: After cooking the grip on the thermostat is Hot, use oven mitt to withdraw. Proof is in the pudding: - First evening cooked three 9” long Rib-Eyes using the Thermometer, aroma of cooking garlic drew family into the kitchen. Rib-Eyes cooked consistently throughout all the steaks, tender and juicy. - Steaks were cooked to order, two were prepared between Medium-Rare and Rare and one Well-Done. Simply select a number between 1-9 to select Rare to Well Done. - Second evening it was Salmon Filets with roasted vegies. Salmon was delicious and the vegetables were the best I have ever enjoyed. - The salmon did not require flipping over and the thermostat control alerts when to flip the steaks. - There was no smoke from the oven in either steak or salmon dinners – nice. Likes: - Ease of cooking. Ninja states: “Choose your food type” “Select desired doneness” “Insert Foodi Smart Thermometer” “Foodi Grill Smart XL Grill does the rest” That is exactly how easy it is to cook on the Foodi Smart Grill, even makes me look smart in the kitchen! - Foodi Smart Thermometer. The application of the Smart Thermometer and supporting processes is astonishing. Like having AI built into your oven. The thermometer cooking system is reason enough to have the XL Smart in the kitchen. - Front Panel is in an uncomplicated layout that provides ease of control and feedback - Low noise level. - Build quality is exceptional. - Cook time is remarkably quick. Decided to have Rib-Eyes again this evening and asked family if they want the steaks cooked outside on our $1000 grill or the XL Smart Grill. Steaks are being cooked on the Ninja, yes it really is that good. Family loves the dinners, style, and ease of use. For the Foodi XL Smart Grill my Rating is a strong Five Star Rating.

Unpacking and set up was extremely easy. I referenced the manual for cooking time for hotdogs and cheeseburgers, it took 5 minutes to cook the hots dogs and 10 minutes for the cheeseburgers. I placed the food inside and set the time for 10 minutes and pressed play. As soon as it started cooking, I must say it sounded like an airplane ready to take off. The fan is loud but not a deal breaker because it is temporary. The grill does take up a good amount of counter space so it will be stored off the counter when not in use. As you can seen from the pictures the burgers could have cooked a little longer for medium rare but the burgers were thick overall it was perfectly cooked. The time specified in the manual was close, but you can always use the probe but the meat has to be thicker than one inch. Cooking surface area is large enough to cook a 12 inch steak, as you can see from the pictures 5 hamburgers fit easily. The burger came out as if it was cooked on an outside grill. I love this new cooking tool, it will be used a lot during the winters for steaks and burgers. Overall, this is an awesome indoor grill that is versatile - grills, fries and broils. Clean up is very easy. I highly recommend this grill for the winters and for all your frying needs.

I've been using the ninja foodi XL for about a week now. So far, I used it to grill some chicken and burgers, roast a tenderloin and air fry some french fries.  Everything I grilled or fried in it cooked fast and evenly. The meat was juicy, the fries were crispy and it all tasted great.  However I'd like to point out that there's a small learning curve when using this machine.  So make sure you read the included cookbook/manual. Or watch a few videos on how to use it. Initially, I didn't and found myself very confused.   Aside from that, I definitely recommend this for all your indoor cooking needs.

This all in one grill is really a gem. You can plug it in and start using it immediately I do suggest washing it off but you can start cooking immediately. My first meal was fish I overcooked it a little but once altering the Settings or the time it came out perfect. Love that I can have a meal that mimics being on the grill. The only downside is the noise. But, 9/10 would recommend for someone who doesn’t necessarily have the space for an actual grill. Love that it has a thermometer to make sure the food is at the correct temperature. If you’re limited on space but want a grill, get it!

This thing is amazing! More compact than you would think (large, but not overly so). Easy to operate & clean. Feels well built. Pretty much nothing you can't cook with it. It really is smokeless. The touch screen walks you thru the entire process making it almost mistake free. I seriously will be using this as much as I can :-) The attached photo is the results of four 8oz sirloin steaks set to be cooked to medium rare. All four cooked at once and cooked to perfection! You won't regret buying this!

Probably the best appliance I have ever purchased. I use this practically every day. This is very versatile and easy to use and clean. When my kids moved out, this was the one singular thing they demanded for their new place. Makes a great gift for anyone. It can be a bit heavy, but it is so practical, it could take the place of a kitchen stove.
