Pro:
-Does a good job of mapping the rooms
-Zone cleaning
-Strong suction
Con:
-Doesn’t clean corners
-Motor is loud
-Can get stuck on furniture
**I had an issue with the vacuum rebooting throughout the day, and it turns out to be due to wifi channel switching handled by the router, a common feature that routers have. It seemed to be a specific case and went away after I tried a different router, but it’s something worth mentioning.
I think this vacuum is good overall. It has good cleaning power and is good at navigating itself around each room. The smart mapping is pretty accurate, but it will still leave some spots uncleaned. It’s also a little loud while running. The app is straightforward and cleaning zones can be set up.
Cleaning
Overall it does a good job of detecting the parameter and avoiding objects. On the initial run, it will follow the walls while mapping out the area, then it will start cleaning the area in a linear pattern. If it hits an object, it will correct itself and does a good job to navigate around it, but sometimes it will climb up on furniture parts, like table legs, and get stuck. Once the cleaning is done, it will return to the base and shimmy itself back to the base. Most of the time it will do it by itself, but sometimes it will keep bumping against the base or pushing the base away. The motor is also on the loud side, sounding like a R/C car running around.
The cleaning power is strong enough to pick up pet hair and small debris from a carpeted room. However, it doesn’t clean corners well, or at all. It will turn away from corners leaving about 1’-2’ of space untouched. It also doesn’t clean right up to the walls. It takes about 15 mins to clean a small bedroom, with a battery life of about 2 hours.
Setting up and the app
Initial setup was very easy with the Neato app. The app user experience is okay. You can start cleaning remotely, see your cleaning summary, and set up schedules easily. You can also assign cleaning zones. Right now you only get one map which will update after each cleaning. To set up each zone, you tap to create a new zone and assign it either Clean or No-Go. It worked well enough. There were a few instances that the app lost connection while the vacuum was running and needing a restart.
Maintenance
Upkeep isn’t too bad. The dust bin is easy to clean and the filters are easily removed. There’s extra filters included and each will last up to 2 months. Cleaning the brush does require it to be removed and using the included comb to clean it. The brush will last 6-8 months. The battery needs to be changed once a year.

I don’t like vacuuming. To me it’s a mundane task to accomplish. The room gets clean, dust gets taken out of your carpets and hardwood floors get a revamp if you have the proper equipment. I’ve always been a tech guru ever since I’ve been a child and I love taking the easy route. Automation to me is the key to a successful piece of tech. That and how useful it is in our day-to-day use.
I’ve never been more in love with something that can’t reciprocate and is made of plastic and metal. The Neato Vacuum gets three thumbs up from me if i had an extra opposable thumb. The application that it requires tracks the thing around your home and gives you a detailed map of where it travelled as well as being able to set a zone where it doesn’t clean. The Neato Vacuum doesn’t talk back back after you’ve sent it on a mission to eradicate all dust related messes. It goes out there and does it until it can’t or learns your complete floorplan.
Cleaning this machine is a breeze with the included blade that stores neatly behind the docking station. It has a small filter and small dustpan that needs to be cleaned in regular intervals. And last but not least it backs up into the docking station and wiggles into position and charges itself. I can spend a good hour just staring at it. I’ve dubbed my Neato Vacuum after my favorite Disney movie robot.

Unique Design, Competent Cleaner

Summary: In a crowded field the Neato Robotics - D9 is a contender but do make sure the features match your requirements. I liked its deep cleaning ability, its ability to get around or over obstacles, its app, but wish it could empty its own dirt bin.
Pros
- Long battery life between charges, enough to clean for at least two hours
- squared off design seemed to give it a broader 'swipe' and faster cleaning times compared to round designs.
- Aggressive 'climbing' ability to get around or over obstacles.
Neutral
- At times the unique squared off design could get in the way of narrow spaces, at times it helped with corners. Not a clear win.
- Like all robots, it works better with uncluttered work areas. So you need to pick up your socks.
- My furniture is rugged, more delicate furniture could potentially be dinged by its aggressive climbing as it hunts to get past obstacles
Cons
- It is 2-dimensional in its thinking... meaning it can't carry over 'no clean zones' from floor to floor.
- I am not a fan of having to empty dust bins every time. This is common with most robots though.

This robot vacuum does a great job of cleaning on carpet and bare floors.
Downloading the app and connecting the vacuum is quick and easy.
You do need to make sure to clear the floors of anything that can get stuck in the rollers or clog it like shoestrings on shoes, large pieces of paper, anything you don't want picked up. Same as any vacuum. The first few times running the vacuum it had trouble in some spots, mostly corners where furniture is placed close together. For instance I have a chair with a table placed next to it and the table is near a credenza. The vacuum got stuck, and though it tried, it wasn't able to back out. So for the first couple of runs, I had to babysit it. There are no remote controls that let you try to help it go backward or sideways when it gets stuck. That is the only reason I deducted a star.
Once it gets the rooms mapped like you want, you can add the trouble spots to no go zones to keep it from getting stuck. Or rearrange the furniture.
I did have to move the base from my preferred spot because the vacuum couldn't find it to park and charge. Once I found a good spot, it's not been a problem.
The cleaning is GREAT. It really picks up the dirt. It gets under the tables, beds and behind the sofa with no problem. If there is room for it, it will go unless you tell it not to. The dustbin is a good size and easy to access for emptying.

Neato Robotics - D9

When I received my Neato D9 I was excited to get it set up and running.
It mapped out my house as it started its first cleaning cycle. It seemed to find some markers to indicate a room and finished cleaning each "room" before moving on to the next section. I was a little frustrated that I couldn't see a map of its progress as it was built, and when it finished, the map was blurry or distorted based on wheel slippage that happened because the raised portion would get stuck under the cabinets on a few occasions. I removed one star for that.
While the rooms were not square, it did seem to get to every point of the floor as expected, but one thing surprised me that I'd never thought about before. While going through the kitchen, it recognized the raised portion of the standing mats in front of the sink. After it finished doing the regular back and forth in the kitchen, it went back to the mats and hit them from direct paths to get a better clean around them. Every robotic vacuum we've used in the past has not even recognized them as an area that needed more attention to detail, so I added a star for that.
The scheduling function works as intended, and it hasn't run out of battery in the middle of cleaning yet, but I'll just assume it would find it's charging station before that were to happen. It is a little tricky adding the no-go zones with a map that's not squared up, but I think it works well enough. I'm sure the map will square up better with more cleaning sessions.
Cleaning out the filter is fairly simple. Just need to remember that this has a much smaller bin than one that you push, so it will need to be cleaned out quite frequently.

If you’re looking for a little cleaning helper, look no further!
Finding a robot vacuum that can actually clean isn’t the easiest. There are so many options that only kinda pickup stuff. This little guy really “sucks” and by that, I mean cleans as good as a small/light vacuum which is saying something! It is so well packaged, and setup is a breeze. The mapping ability was crazy cool for me, as I had an older model from a different brand that just drove around until the battery was almost dead, and then it looked for its home. This one will map and actually do zones/areas instead of driving around and going over areas it already did! I also love the shape of this thing, having the edge where the roller is, is the best for cleaning from what I can tell. I have few, if any, complaints with the D9. It's not too loud, it really seems to do quite well in actually cleaning, and the accessories are great/convenient. So far, it's able to clean a whole main floor (only a few rooms mind you) on a charge.

Very powerful

I decided to invest on this vacuum because I have a severe allergy to dust and I need a device that can seriously clean.
Not disappointed, the D9 is super powerful and even cleans corners as they claim. I had a Shark before and I always had to manually clean the spaces it couldn't reach.
The D9 gets all the dust and dirt. It works amazingly both on carpet and wood floors. I was actually very impressed on how well it cleaned my very old carpet.
My only complaint is that they are not offering a self-emptying base. However the tank capacity of the Neato is quite impressive. I haven't had to empty it yet and it's been a week.
All in all, very happy with the vacuum.
