This vacuum is amazing. It's our first wireless vacuum so we didn't know what to expect up front other than the premium Dyson price tag. We started using it and found that the battery lasts longer than what we need to get most jobs done. If you are vacuuming the whole house (ours is a two story 4 bedroom), then it would need a recharge between floors at most (one hour give or take). I will mention it is a little heavy. It has strong suction and picks up everything well. I really like the green laser-like light that comes on to show you what's there (hair, dirt, etc.) That works really well and I'm not sure how we gaged cleanliness prior to this? The attachments all work well and go on and off well too. It takes a couple of hours between full charges. We also bought a stand for it online which makes keeping it together much easier.

So I may be coming back to revisit this, but my initial impressions are this is a great vacuum. Battery life is great, has excellent suction, a decent set of accessories to start (though I wish Best Buy carried the add-on accessories that you can get direct from Dyson), and was easy to setup and get working. My only concern after having it for just over a month is the main attachment for use on carpet (see photos) has a wheel on its base that popped off and it appears that the screw broke. I exchanged it in store with no problem, but now I’m left wondering if it’s an engineering issue and it’ll do it again or if it was just a quality control issue and it’ll last for years. I’m still going to recommend it though as Dyson quality is typically very good and I’m leaning towards my experience just being a QC issue. If issues persist I’ll revisit and downgrade my score, otherwise I’ll come back after six months or so and put my score to five stars if things go smoothly.

We have owned a Dyson for 10 plus years. The v10 we had before still works well (so we thought) but the roller broke. We purchased this Dyson, after first use, we can tell that our previous one was not working as well as we thought. It managed to pick up more dust/debris from the carpets. We also have wood floors and the feature to see the dust/debris on there is awesome. I like that it shows the remaining batter time and you don’t have to hold a button for it to run, just press the power button once. It is a little heavier than the other vacuum but not much. Everyone in the family is able to use it without a problem. Hope this one last 3-5 years as well.

Powerful, sleek & versatile. I was hesitant to purchase it at first because of the hefty price tag and the variety of cheaper options but I have to admit this blows all similarly designed & purposed vacuums out of the water. Just get it, trust me. I'm returning mine for the bigger one !

This is my first time owning and using a dyson. Over all I have really enjoyed it. After vacuuming my carpets they literally felt new again and so plush. Its also very satisfying so see how much its sucking up each pass. The thing I am a bit disappointed on is the battery life on it, especially when using it on boost. It will usually last approximately 15 minutes (when used on my hardwood floors). That’s been the thing ive disliked the most. I feel that at this price point it should at least come with a second battery. I tried buying a second battery but of course that was sold out. If you have a larger home i dont think this is the one for you. Haven’t fully decided if its worth keeping for that reason.

I cannot stress enough that this is a fantastic vacuum if it is your first Dyson. You will love the powerful suction, long battery life, superior build quality, and performance that will be shocking to comprehend at first. This Dyson Gen5 Detect Cordless Vacuum has all the features you need to tackle cleaning every corner of your home. I know this because this is my 3rd Dyson, and it is by far the best. Like I mentioned above, if this is your first, you will love it. You have reached the pinnacle of floor cleaning, and you simply will not find a better alternative. Now, only read further if you currently own or have owned a cordless Dyson. I will be going through a few likes and dislikes that I have noticed after using the Gen5 Detect for a few weeks. Also, for context, I own a Dyson V12 Torque Drive that I will be using as my point of comparison. First things first, I do own the first-generation Fluffy Optic™ attachment, and I can confirm that the second generation is much brighter and more effective in rooms with more light. Not being able to see the laser in a bright room was always a bit of an annoyance. I included a side-by-side comparison to show how much better the new Fluffy Optic™ really is. The laser is great but can also drive you nuts. It's so effective that you could come back 5 hours later and see all of the new dust that accumulated throughout the day. You will soon change your vacuuming habits. Let's talk about batteries. The run time on the Dyson Gen5 Detect is more than enough for how I use it. My home is about 1,500 sqft, and I can clean it all on one charge while keeping the setting on "AUTO." Just as a warning, your mileage may vary. My home is about 60% hardwood, and the fluffy roller does not use much power. If you use this vacuum for regular deep cleaning and your home is larger than mine with more carpet, you will want the Outsize version or possibly an extra battery. Weight! There's more. See what I did there? Okay, this vacuum is about 1lb heavier than the previous generations, which is a very noticeable difference after using my V12 for the past 2 years. I was genuinely concerned because my wife would complain about fatigue with the V12 while using it for longer sessions, especially on carpet. I am pleased to report that you should not be concerned about the added weight. The more I use the Gen5, the more I notice that it is actually easier to use and more controllable with the extra heft. I'm not an engineer, but I did take a logic class once in college, and I believe the extra weight helps reduce the effort needed to maneuver the vacuum on carpet when it creates a strong seal. Before, the vacuum weighed less but felt like it required more force to push the unit along. Trigger be gone! Thank you for removing the trigger! I know that many will miss this, but removing the power trigger and giving us a power button is a massive quality-of-life improvement. Here are some rapid-fire dislikes. 1) I think the handle needs to be larger. 2) The screen on the back does not fill the cutout in the plastic and looks cheap. If I were Dyson, I would have a purpose-built round LCD. 3) There are no mounting accessories offered other than the cheap option that comes with the vacuum. What are you thinking, Dyson? I love the freestanding mount for my V11 because I don't want to mount it to the wall. 4) Battery charge time is slow. I know they do this to save the battery, but you should seriously consider a second if you have a large home. So the big question on most people's minds will be, "If I already have a Dyson, should I upgrade?" My answer would be no. If you already own a Dyson V11 or newer, I would not recommend upgrading to the Gen5 Detect. The marginal improvements just don't warrant the upgrade. Sure, I love everything about this vacuum, but next to my V11, it's only somewhat better. Like I said at the beginning, if this is your first Dyson, you won't be disappointed. If you are replacing a Dyson, think twice, but you already know you will be getting a quality machine. Act accordingly.

Dyson continues to refine its cordless vacuums, with this Gen5detect model being its most powerful yet with 262AW (air watts) of suction on boost mode compared to the V11 185AW at boost I use now. Run time has also been extended to 70 minutes in Eco mode compared to 60 for the V11. The weight is up to 7.72 lbs. compared to 6.61 lbs. for V11. The bin capacity is the same at .2 gallons. Motorbar heads are the same size as well with 4.5 hr. charging time being equal. This model also comes with a fluffy optic head cleaner for hard floors that utilizes a green light that illuminates dirt on the floor – as well as any tile or wood imperfections. It works very well but is best viewed in a slightly dark room or dark floors. Also new is a dusting/crevice tool built into the vacuuming tube. The vacuum top shows run-time as well as a graph showing size of particles that have been vacuumed. This model is stated to now remove 99.9% of dirt down to .1 micron. And the biggest improvement – to my mind – is they have, finally, added a power button – no more having to hold a trigger!!!! In my real world use I was able to clean my 3100 sq ft house (30% carpet using motorbar and 70% tile/wood using optic cleaner) using eco mode with 10 minutes remaining – and I did not rush. I got 45 minutes using medium mode (same mix as eco) and 20 minutes on boost using crevice tool. While I have no real-world numbers as far as AW comparisons – this model in eco mode seems to have more suction than V11 in auto mode. It certainly has more running time and is definitely quieter. Using the optic head is great. But the downside is you can visually see that the floor gets much dirtier, much faster than one would think. As such vacuuming habits may need to be adjusted. The particle graph is fine but is more like keeping track of a video game score for me - rather than being helpful. Hair screw tool is great for cushions, stairs, etc. The built in crevice tool is nice as you don’t have to change heads or carry around other parts. But if you remove the built in crevice tool (to try to save a little weight) you cannot attach the hard tube – can only attach the combination tool. The combination tool works well enough for use on ceilings, curtains etc. - places built in tool can’t reach or is too small. Filter and optic head are both washable. 2-year warranty. This unit is pretty much better in every way than prior models - but it still has some old and new issues. The weight gets more evident the longer you use the vacuum. Luckily, it’s easy to switch from hand to hand now that it has a power button. The weight also makes it extremely cumbersome to use in a car, etc. In my opinion there needs to be a flexible hose included to attach tools to allowing for much easier use – kind of like the old canister vacuums had. Still no light on the motorbar. Unit still cannot stand by itself – it must be leaned against something, laid down flat or “parked” in the wall dok. Parts are not interchangeable to other V models as I can do between V10 & V11. Tube power connections are different leading down to the head. Also, battery size is longer than V11 and has a different connector fitting into the vacuum as well as a different power connection into battery. As such cannot cross use batteries and now must have 2 chargers set up. Maybe all 5detect model parts are interchangeable? In boost mode, if using crevice or combination tool attached directly to vacuum head - there is so much air exiting the vacuum that smaller bits get blown around making it hard to vacuum them up. This unit does not have the trademark “whirl” sound when it is turned off, which I have to say I miss. Overall, another step forward for Dyson that is more powerful and quieter than any prior model - but with that power comes weight. Also, to move forward I guess they had to break with prior models’ interchangeability, which is disappointing. I wonder too at what point will size/weight be too much as this model is right on the edge for me. Having been able to test competitors’ cordless models I have to say that for me Dyson is the benchmark. Also having used prior Dyson models I can attest to the fact they function well in the long term. So, I do recommend this model - especially for someone new to their line. But if you currently have a working Dyson cordless vacuum (especially one with removable battery) I would suggest waiting as these older units are pretty great and lighter too.

OMG.... Now my kids love to vacuum... The Lazer light does it all.... The kids now think it's a video game... I will milk it as long as I can so I don't have to vacuum. Changing topics back to the vacuum.... Putting the vacuum together was super easy. Took all but 2 minutes. Charged it and was up and running. Total of 4 heads. 1 regular floor that has tangle prevention. 1 Small head that has tangle prevention. 1 Lazer mode. 1 Small upholstery. Emptying in the Gen 5 is much better than my first generation small Dyson ball floor vacuum. This gen 5 in 1 push of a button dumps out the dirt AND wipes clean the screen of hair and other stuff. Oh man much better than my first generation vacuum.. way more hygienic. The auto mode is nice .. it changes power up and down as needed. My favorite the laser light mode. I have 2 dogs and they shed like snow beasts... I already have a robot vacuum that vacuums 5 days a week on the weekdays but we still augment with our various other floor vacuums. Within a few minutes this vacuum already picked up a boat load of dust, hair, and dog fur. I have 3 people in my family that have long hair and this vacuum did not tangle like my other vacuums. Even my Dyson first gen ball vacuum gets all tangled and I need to deal with that frequently. So this is a plus with the new brushes. Battery life is pretty good.... My kid vacuumed 2 rooms and it still has about half charge left. The design is nice and slick as always Dyson is the gold star when it comes to appearance coupled with performance, functionality and use. The only thing to ding this vacuum on as with other vacuums of similar design is that it is top heavy and can cause fatigue over long use. If you have issues with this then you may want to consider a different model that is not top heavy that won't cause such fatigue. Other than that.... Great design, great look, great performance. I would highly recommend this product.

This is the second Dyson vacuum I owned. The first was one of their big, intimidating upright vacuums that took up tons of space but made up for it with raw sanitizing power. As such I was eager to try out the Gen5 Detect to see if it could serve as a worthy and more space-conscious replacement. And while I’ve been overall very impressed by its performance so far… I sadly have come to the conclusion that it may be more of a supplement. To start, I’d like to highlight that there are a lot of things that this vacuum did right. The first thing is that it comes with just about everything you might want or need standard, rather than requiring you to go out and look for expensive accessories after the fact. And as you’d expect it offers a ton of suction power and very good cleaning performance. The standout feature here is the “fuzzy optic” brush cleaning head meant for solid floors. A green light source scattered in a wide fan in front of the cleaning area causes every speck of dust, stray dog hair, or scuff on the floorboards to immediately fluoresce so that you can identify which areas need the most attention as you work, which is supplemented by a real time display on the back showing you how much material the vacuum is picking up as you go and how big most of it is. I’ll admit that I’m not sure getting a final tally of the number of dust particles removed is necessarily something I NEED to know, but it does add to the cool factor of the tech. Other features such as the hair-removal combs for the carpet cleaning head or the interesting corkscrew design for the upholstery head aren’t quite as flashy, but they do the job as well. And, as I’ve come to expect from Dyson, there’s a lot of attention shown to making the unit easy to maintain as well. Every time you open the dust bin a set of seals scrapes down the permanent metal filter, helping to clear it out and making sure none of the crud you pick up works its way back into the rest of the machine. The main HEPA filter twists off and can be cleaned in the sink. And everything with moving parts that need to be maintained is designed with toolless maintenance in mind, making it quick and easy clean up after you’re done or swap in spares when the time comes to replace parts. As for the actual user experience, I was very satisfied. The cleaning heads aren’t quite big enough that I’d want to be vacuuming an entire house with them, but they’re great for spot cleaning after a project or quickly touching up a bedroom. And the motor, despite its bulk, is shockingly quiet. By default it operates on an auto mode, where it adjusts the motor speed to how much dust it picks up. In the past I’ve found that these kinds of things are usually very hit or miss, with it often making more sense to just turn them up to full and leave them here, but I didn’t have any issues with the Dyson. It was responsive any time it found a big pile of dust or stubborn clump of dog hair, and apart from that it kept things dialed down so that I could enjoy watching the bin fill up without feeling bad about scaring the dog. Unfortunately, as much as I liked my time with the vacuum, I also kept running into little issues that did dampen my enthusiasm somewhat. The first one was encountered right as I opened the box and found popped seams on two of the cleaning heads. It wasn’t particularly hard to fix – a little pressure along the open seams was all that it took to get the plastic parts to seal back together and there haven’t been issues since – but it was very surprising to see that it made it through quality control on a product from a company that’s made a name for itself on paying attention to small details. I never ran into any similar issues with build quality again, but I did find a lot of things about the design that seemed a little… off. The weight distribution, for example. The motor and battery unit are very heavy, and the attachments do not do a good job of taking up any of that weight as you use them. This can make the thing a little ungainly to maneuver, which made getting into ceiling corners something of an adventure. Apparently with this model they also moved the power button from a trigger on the grip to a button placed on the rear of the unit. While I can see how a trigger wouldn’t feel great to use here, I don’t think that a button that more or less requires a second hand to reach is that much better. Often I do find myself needing both hands to steady the vacuum, particularly with the wand attached, so the presence of a thumb switch or some other mechanism to allow for one-handed operation would have gone a long way towards making it feel less awkward. I was also rather disappointed to see that there was little if any attention being paid to how you store the collection of accessories that come included. On my upright vacuum, everything either had a storage solution or was designed to retract into the body of the unit itself so that you never had to worry about losing something. Here, it feels like an afterthought. The charging stand has two sockets for accessories, but there simply isn’t enough space to make use of them. Just about everything is wide enough that if you insert it into one of the sockets, you block access to the other. The only exception to this is the main wand, which you’d normally probably be storing attached to the vacuum anyway. So everything ended up scattered around the living room for a day or so before being shoved unceremoniously into a bag stowed in the closet. Finally, the carpet cleaning brush was constantly getting bogged down when I tried to run it until I was able to dial in the right clearance using a stiff slider on the front of the cleaning head, where you basically had to flip the thing upside down to adjust it. If you live in a home with throw rugs or multiple thicknesses of carpet, it seems to me like this would be an annoying extra step to go through every time you wanted to move on to another room. Ultimately, I don’t think any of these issues are necessarily deal breakers. Most other vacuums I’ve used have had similar problems, if I’m being honest. But when you’re paying extra for a brand like Dyson, which is supposedly offering an elevated experience, it feels like it’s not unreasonable to expect more. It’s still a great option for small spaces or as a supplement to an upright or robot vacuums to do detail work, but in my opinion it’s still something of a lesser option to Dyson’s upright offerings.

The Dyson Gen5detect Cordless vacuum is a top-tier cleaning tool that combines powerful performance with innovative features. Its exceptional suction power effortlessly handles dirt, dust, and pet hair across various surfaces, while the built-in green laser highlights microscopic dust on hard floors for thorough cleaning. Designed for convenience, it is lightweight, easy to maneuver, and offers up to 70 minutes of runtime, making it ideal for larger spaces. The advanced filtration system captures 99.99% of particles as small as 0.1 microns, making it perfect for allergy sufferers or pet owners. Additional features like the LCD screen for real-time updates and versatile attachments enhance its functionality, although the price and smaller bin size may be considerations for some. Overall, the Dyson Gen5detect is a premium investment that delivers outstanding results, setting a new standard for cordless vacuums.

Great evolution to the Dyson product line

I've been purchasing Dyson's cordless vacuums since the V6 model so have owned several iterations throughout the years. This is a great step in the right direction for this product line for the main component itself as well as the included attachments (I've included some pictures of comparisons between the Gen5 Detect vs. V12 Detect). Now, I will acknowledge that, as someone who owns several iterations of Dyson vacuums, they've made just enough design changes that this model is not compatible with components/accessories of previous models. This vacuum does a great job with hardwood floors using the Fluffy Optic cleaner head. I also use the same head for low pile rubs and hasn't caused an issue. The green laser has been improved with a little more power to shine a little further than previous models, which is helpful for hardwood/tile floors, specifically. It's, of course, significantly more noticeable in dark spaces but it's sufficiently powerful enough to illuminate particulate matter - it's a fun way to incorporate the Tyndall Effect into a consumer product. I honestly thought this as just a gimmick but it's actually quite helpful. The Digital Motorbar cleaner head has been slightly redesigned - it still incorporates their spiraling across the rotating component to help reduce entanglement of hair but it also has noticeably shorter bristles to help with that as well. In addition (this is probably the biggest change) is that they've incorporated a comb-like component into the cleaner head to essentially remove hair from the bristles so it can get sucked up into the canister. For carpets, this head also has the option to get tighter suction with the red notch at the face of the head. It opens/closes some "gates" to allow for use on low and high pile carpets- when it's open it allows a bypass stream so that it's not completely (literally) vacuum sealed. Both attachments have a new bouncy tube at the pivot point of the neck to help maneuver the cleaner attachment as you use them. The primary wand (tube) itself has an integrated dusting and crevice tool. These were traditionally two separate attachments that you could swap out but now it's always available so you don't have to carry them around or go back to the dock. Minor, creative change. The third major attachment is the conical surface brush (I use them for car seats and couches, primarily). The angled design is supposedly intended to help with managing hair. The fourth is their standard combo tool that's sort of a wide-mouth nozzle and brush in one. Overall, the power is outstanding. Note that these new attachments now come with integrated ports to actually power the rotating tools (there are two metal pins at the docking point), which is probably how they get the brushes to rotate as well as they do. Previous models that didn't have this would jam up the attachments if the suction was too tight. MY GRIPES: - I'm glad they changed the on/off switch to be a button and not a trigger like they had in the past; however, this thing is heavy and I can see extended use of the vacuum could cause some strain on the wrist. - Because of all the motors and batteries being situated on the handheld component, this vacuum can get a little clunky to maneuver when, for example, vacuuming your couch. - There's not standing dock available to purchase for this vacuum and because of the minor changes to the power cord and attachment design, you can't reuse previous Dyson docks. Your only real option is to mount the (included) wall dock or buy a third party model. - The 70+ minute rating is when the vacuum is used on the "ECO" setting. That should be sufficient for large homes with hardwood floors but I would say, you'd get ~35% less battery time when using it at the standard setting and probably an additional 50% reduction when you go to intense setting. Overall, though, that should be more than sufficient for standard sized homes.

I would recommend this to a friend
