The TV is great. I have the same in 65”. Only issue was, I had no accessories in the box and by the time I opened it to have it hung on the wall, I was past my return date. Had to buy a remote and power cord online.

Design
The Samsung S84D OLED TV feels premium right out of the box. Its ultra-thin profile and almost nonexistent bezels make it a statement piece in any room. Whether you’re wall-mounting it or using the sturdy center stand, it fits right into both modern and traditional living spaces. Samsung kept things minimal, ensuring nothing distracts from the star of the show: the screen itself.
The back panel is clean, with cable management grooves that help maintain a tidy look. For those who care about the aesthetic details, Samsung nails it here.
Smart OS
Tizen OS powers the S84D, and it’s a mixed bag of excellent usability and some frustrations. Navigating the interface is smooth, and all major streaming services are built-in. Universal search makes finding content easy, whether it’s your favorite show or a new app to download. One standout feature is Ambient Mode, which turns the screen into a piece of digital art or an information hub when idle. It’s a great way to avoid the "big black box" look on your wall.
That said, ads are littered throughout the interface. This isn’t unique to Samsung—most smart TV platforms do this—but it can feel intrusive. Samsung's ecosystem integration shines though. If you’re a Galaxy user, this TV syncs seamlessly with your other devices. It also supports Apple AirPlay, so iOS users aren’t left out. For Google Smart Home fans like me, the setup is a breeze.
Aesthetics and Picture Quality
Here’s where the S84D truly shines. The OLED panel is breathtaking. Colors are rich and vibrant without feeling artificial, blacks are inky and endless, and the contrast pulls you right into the action. HDR10 content, in particular, looks stunning. The brightness levels might not hit the peaks of QD-OLED panels, but they’re more than enough to make true HDR10 content look enthralling. Watching a high-action sequence or a scenic documentary on this TV is an experience that will leave you wide-eyed.
Samsung’s picture modes are well-suited for various tastes. Dynamic mode is the bold, vibrant option for those who want everything to pop, while Movie and Filmmaker modes are tailored for a more cinematic experience. Personally, I prefer Movie mode—it brings out the details in dark scenes and gives everything a natural warmth that’s perfect for late-night viewing.
Calibration enthusiasts will appreciate the easy access to Expert settings. If you’re diving into these, I highly recommend checking out online calibration guides from reputable TV review websites. Every OLED panel has slight variances, so fine-tuning can make a noticeable difference.
Quick aside, you will probably not enjoy using the “Picture Clarity” feature on the TV if you are someone who easily notices when a picture is distorted, or, if you can notice moments of motion that do not look right. I ensure that Picture Clarity is turned off before every movie I watch and keep it turned off for watching all kinds of regular content too. Picture Clarity causes too many visual artifacts and distortions, even on low settings, for me to recommend using it. I recommend keeping this setting off.
For gamers, HDMI 2.1 unlocks 4K at 120Hz, making this an excellent choice for next-gen consoles or gaming PCs. Whether you’re swinging through the city in Spider-Man: Miles Morales or exploring the stunning vistas of Forza Horizon 5, this TV delivers smooth, responsive gameplay with vibrant visuals. I tested the 120Hz refresh speeds using my gaming PC and had a great time playing Cyberpunk 2077, Night City looked absolutely colorful and crisp.
OLED Considerations
Let’s talk about OLED care. Burn-in is always a concern, but Samsung includes tools to keep your panel healthy. Features like pixel shift and logo brightness adjustments work behind the scenes to prevent static images from leaving a mark. If you’re a fan of news channels or sports with constant tickers, make sure these settings are enabled. They’re there for a reason, and they’ll save your screen in the long run.
The Missing Pieces: DTS and Dolby Vision
Now, here’s my main gripe with this TV: the lack of Dolby Vision and DTS audio pass-through. For a modern high-end product, these omissions are glaring. Dolby Vision has become the gold standard for HDR content, offering dynamic metadata that adjusts scene by scene to deliver the best possible picture. Samsung’s reliance on HDR10+ is fine, but it doesn’t quite reach the same level of detail and precision as Dolby Vision.
The absence of DTS support is equally disappointing. For those with Blu-ray collections or high-quality media servers, DTS audio is a must-have. Samsung’s decision to skip these formats to avoid licensing fees feels like a corner cut at the consumer’s expense. It’s frustrating because the S84D gets so much right, but these exclusions might be a dealbreaker for cinephiles who want the complete home theater experience.
Final Thoughts
The Samsung S84D OLED is a gorgeous mid-range TV that delivers where it counts. The picture quality is astounding, with vivid colors, deep blacks, and just enough peak brightness to make HDR10 content immersive and enjoyable. The design is sleek and modern, and Tizen OS provides a feature-rich platform that integrates well with other devices.
But the lack of Dolby Vision and DTS audio support is hard to overlook. For those who demand the best from their home theater setup, these omissions might steer you toward other brands. However, if you’re willing to compromise on those features, this TV offers incredible value, especially if you find it on sale.
This is the perfect choice for someone who wants a stunning display, smooth smart features, and solid gaming performance without stepping into flagship territory. Just know what features you’re giving up on before choosing the S84D.
P.S. – It’s very hard to capture an OLED’s quality in photos only, so I recommend checking this TV out in-store if you can!

SarahH,
We're sorry to hear of this misunderstanding. Please know that the industry standard when measuring screen size refers to the measurement of the screen when measured diagonally (76.6"). The measurements of your 77" S84D are 67.5" x 38.9" x 1.8" (W x H x D) when measured without the stand.

S84D 4K OLED Smart TV – A Multimedia Experience!
|
Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
Samsung’s 77” Class S84D Series 4K OLED Smart Tizen TV is the largest one yet in my household. Aside the ultra high-definition pictures and videos it is capable of delivering, I have discovered its interactive and interconnectivity features/abilities may be the icing on the cake.
The S84D is my second 4K OLED TV with the previous one being a 65” from a competing manufacturer. While the initial leap to OLEDs may appear frightening on account of potential “burn in”, technology now exists to reduce the likelihood of this occurrence. Samsung employs pixel shifting, varying logo brightness and pixel refreshing as tools to this effect. At 67.7 x 13.1 x 41.7 inches (W x D x H, with the stand attached), the S84D while quite imposing captures the 77-inch diagonally measured viewing area with very slim bezels. The overall appearance is mostly screen. The integrated 2.1 channel surround sound speaker system with Dolby Atmos and Object Tracking Sound Lite is one of the best I have experienced in a TV with this formfactor. Sound output, in my opinion, is typically not given much considerations as soundbars have become ubiquitous. The output is sound that is simulated to originate from the location of its source on screen. Bass is decent for TV speakers and the whole system has a 30W RMS sound output rating. There are options to select preset modes or tweak an equalizer for that customized sound output.
Highest available resolution is 4K (3,840 x 2,160 pixels) which when coupled with the OLED HDR display produces bright and vibrant images/videos that are truly stunning. This is true irrespective of lighting conditions Colors are not oversaturated and accurately reproduced in my experience. I have discovered pictures cannot accurately capture this and you will need to see the S84D in person. Viewing angles are great all around. AI based upscaling is applied to all input feeds and fast paced scenes smoothly delivered through the display’s 120Hz refresh rate. Brightness, contrast, sharpness etc. can all be tweaked or preset modes selected.
Under the hood is a NQ4 AI Gen2 Processor tasked with all the clever audio and video intelligent features. The operating system is Tizen Smart TV which is developed by Samsung. I found it intuitive and easy to navigate. Operation is fluid and d I have yet to experience any lagging. There is Bluetooth (version 5.2) onboard along with Wi-Fi5 for wireless connectivity.
Accepted physical connections are as listed:
• 4 x HDMI (including 1 x eARC)
• 1 x Ethernet LAN
• 1 x Digital Audio Output (Optical)
• 2 x USB Type-A
• 1 x Coaxial Connector
• 1 x Ex-Link
• 1 x Power Plug
The remote control features a solar cell that can be recharged by sunlight or indoor lighting. Should a faster charging option be required, the base of the remote houses a USB Type-C port to facilitate this. It is lightweight with a minimalistic layout and design. There are about 12 physical buttons, a directional ring and a select pad. The channel and volume buttons can also be toggled as well as depressed. The microphone opening also functions as an LED indicator. During setup, there is the option to set it up to control your cable box. I did discover, however, that only one of my TV boxes played nice. Samsung adds they are constantly adding more compatible devices so I envision changes in the near future. The remote control has an integrated microphone for either Bixby or Amazon Alexa voice assistants. Due to the SmartThings integration, any Samsung smartphone has the option to become an accessory remote control.
My favorite feature as previously stated is the S84D’s interactivity and interconnectivity with a myriad of devices, especially within the Samsung ecosystem. With SmartThings, Samsung’s proprietary app, most smart devices can seamlessly communicate with each other. I happen to also own a Samsung refrigerator with Family Hub which is capable of displaying mirrored content from the S84D. My children particularly love the ability to turn the TV on/off via the refrigerator. My smartphone and tablet are also capable of sharing content with the TV and vice-versa. Should you require a bigger screen (77" perhaps), you are able to project your laptop to the S84D. Samsung also has varied content for a truly multimedia experience via its Samsung TV Plus (movies, live TV and music) plus Game Hub (gaming) which offer free content.
Packaging was top notch. There are guided steps to help you safely unbox the S84D without toppling it over due to its sheer size. One of my favorite steps involves repurposing some Styrofoam pieces as “legs” to help maintain stability before the stands are connected or the TV mounted. Screen is really protected with a screen protector to also prevent scratches.
It has been a while since something came along with this much utility. Samsung’s S84D delivers the essential functionality of a TV and then some. It seamlessly integrates into the SmartThings ecosystem to help make your connected world more cohesive (i.e. doorbell connected to SmartThings now displays video on your TV.) It is stylish, functional, energy efficient and built on Samsung’s legendary quality; I envision using it for years to come and wholly recommend.

Great OLED TV, Looks and Sounds Great!

This TV has great picture, sound, and features. OLED offers up a great display at 120hz where each individual pixel can turn off giving great contrast and HDR content.
HDR10+ looks great on this TV. You get the deep inky blacks from the pixels as they can individually turn off to give you true blacks giving you the high contrast. The panel is also Pantone validated, meaning it stands up to pantone’s high standard for color accuracy to real life. You can also use the AI features to set your preferred color, contrast, and tones. This process is neat as you select your preferred setting based on a set of photos and which one is more appealing to you. Once completed it will save your setting under whichever preset you selected, cinema, sports, or general.
This is a large TV so setup was a bit unique. The Styrofoam that is used to pad the TV in the box also serves as kind of a stand to hold the TV up and off the ground while you attach the two feet that will hold it in place. The directions will walk you through this process although I would have preferred some written guidance. The setup manual is very much a picture guide. My wife and I were capable of doing all the required steps and while heavy, we were able to lift it about waist high onto a chest that we’re using as an entertainment stand until I could get some help mounting it on the wall.
The Tizen OS is easy to navigate, works well, and is packed with features. Not only does it offer all of your typical apps such as Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, and more, it also includes several games and game streaming services. While there’s many to choose from, I was able to download Pac-Man and use the TV remote to burn up 15 minutes of nostalgic fun. You can connect several different types of controllers including Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation among others. Supported streaming services appear to be GeForce NOW, XBox, Boosteroid TV. While I know GeForce Now is a paid service, it’s been a while since I’ve dabbled with Xbox. I think it’s neat to see the support of these services built in.
There’s a total of 4 HDMI with one of them being eARC. You can connect the TV to WiFi as well although I would have liked to have seen at least wifi 6 or 6e standard, it does support LAN connection which should provide a stable network connection. There’s optical audio as well so plenty of options for connectivity. If you also have a Samsung sound bar you’ll be able to take advantage of the Q-Symphony technology that syncs the TV speakers with the soundbar, creating a more robust sound profile.
If you’re looking for a great OLED TV, you won’t go wrong with this one. It’s packed with great display technology, AI features for picture and sound, the remote is even solar powered so you don’t have to worry about changing batteries.

Solid Buy

The S84D is an incredible value offered by Samsung with a beautiful 77” 4K HDR OLED panel with excellent contrast, clarity, and color. The LG sourced panel is a tried and true WRGB OLED but with Samsung’s Tizen OS and feature set running on their Gen 2 NQ4 Ai processor. The S84D has several Samsung branded AI features including dialog enhancement, sound optimization, picture optimization, game modes, and even energy savings.
Out of the box the TV is very vibrant and bright with the default settings, perfect for a bright room. After a quick setup and selecting my picture preference, the AI mode did a pretty good job of dialing in the picture for my room but I do prefer a slightly dimmer screen than it settled on. Fortunately the Tizen OS is easy to navigate and change settings on the fly.
We tend to watch most of our content through our Apple TV, and though the S84D is missing Dolby Vision, we found it selected HDR10+ when available, which greatly enhances HDR capable content. Coming from an older LG OLED, this TV is a nice upgrade and with rich, vibrant colors combined with inky blacks you would expect of an OLED TV. The S84D has excellent viewing angles, far better than any LCD TV I have owned. Though I did notice a slight blue shift with far axis viewing, it is hardly a deal breaker and most people probably wouldn’t even notice.
The TV has decent sound out of the box, but since we already have a home theater setup we took advantage of the eARC port to interface the TV with our soundbar. Everything worked great thanks to CEC, and naturally you can control the audio with the included remote. For those without external speakers, the TV provides decent sound stage and excellent dialog enhancement.
If the hardware wasn’t enough to entice you, the S84D includes Samsung TV Plus live and On-Demand streaming. This ad-supported streaming service is a “no-cost” service that provides a nice variety of channels from News, Reality, Home, Movies, and more. Samsung also includes a nice assortment of Smart TV apps for streaming your favorite content directly on the TV.
Samsung S84D looks as good as you expect while offering a fantastic value for an OLED TV of this size. The combination of the 120hz 4K HDR OLED panel and Samsung’s value added features makes this a definite buy.

Great OLED TV for the Money

I purchased an 83” G4 a few weeks earlier. After watching it for a couple of weeks, I couldn’t even stand to watch my Sony in another room any more. I also didn’t need as bright of a TV as the G4 is in direct sunlight most of the day. This one is in a darker room. The C3 looks just as good, it just isn’t as bright as the G4. In a room without direct sunlight hitting it, it is unnecessary to buy the G4. Save the money and buy this one. It took two updates to get to the latest webos, but well worth it. No issues updating and it works just as well as the G4. It is slightly slower moving around the menu, but that was anticipated. I highly recommend this set. Much better than my Sony and Samsung that were replaced with these. I am using this one on a stand and not wall mounting. If wall mounting and you want something thin that looks like a thin metal picture on your wall, go for the G4 instead.

This is my second OLED I've owned after buying and selling a 77" LG CX OLED. I had a burn in scare so i decided to sell and go NEO-QLED. OLED black levels are in a different league compared to any non-OLED panel on the market. I thought about buying the LG B4 OLED but i have a Samsung ecosystem and it's been good to me. I'm now a Samsung OLED fan for life and looking forward to their future televisions. The 77" S84D is definitely the best or one of the best currently available and a steal for $1,699.

Great TV! Well worth it for the discounted price I got it for. Has access to ALL the apps you think you’ll need (no need to install an external device to get apps). Picture is AMAZING! Has all of the different modes to allow the picture to be adjusted based on what you are viewing (sports, movies, etc). My sound bar was automatically integrated so I control the volume with ONE remote! I also used the Smart Things app on my phone so I can control the TV easier and don’t even need to worry about where the kids “hid” the remote today. Highly recommend!

Do you remember when you attached your audio/video devices to a new TV, setup your streaming services and enjoyed your movies, etc.??
That's NOT how this television works. When turned on, it "serves" an endless array of ads for content, apps and streaming services that it tries to sell (as opposed to the user seeing his/her installed services (ie cable ,dish, HDMI 1, HDMI 2, etc..) ). This can be a challenge for older adults who are not tech savvy or have vision limitations. A television should NOT be an endless commercial for paid services and content FOR SALE..
THE display quality is very good, however. When you ultimately learn how gain access to your own devices and content, it does a very good job with picture quality. The tiny remote adds insult to injury with barely readable buttons no ability to choose inputs which means you have to dig through the TV's on screen menus too find your recent or chosen app or content.
I can't recommend this television in particular for those with little tech ability, or those with vision issues, all of which would make this unit a frustrating ownership experience.
