Customers are saying

Customers are delighted by the Nitro 5's performance, graphics capabilities, and fast SSD, frequently citing its excellent value for the price. Many appreciate the backlit keyboard and ease of use, but some users note that the battery life could be improved and that the laptop can get warm and noisy during intensive use. The laptop's weight is also a point of concern for some customers.

I've had all three size laptop screen sizes and like the children's story ones a little large on plane etc., ones a little small to really see and type on (no side numeric keypad) and this, the 15-inch is just right. A full size illuminated keyboard is easy to type with and easy to see in the wee hours of the night. No annoying key clicks but a real feel tactile key stroke. They large side pad area is perfect for resting your palms while typing. I like the large mouse pad but am not in love with the use of the mouse pad as a mouse key. I'd prefer real buttons or keys. The integration, to me, needs more improvement. But, if you really need a lot of mouse key work for say CAD work, add a real mouse. The sound was FANTASTIC. I couldn't believe when I watched a movie trailer that the sound I heard was coming from my laptop. Phenomenal! I have the SSD (solid state drive) version and for me a great choice. Boot up speed and application speed greatly improved over slower hard drives. For those that use the keyboard for games I think you'll love it. Extra highlights on the ASDW keys. To keep the look of a sharp machine, the on/off power button (which is programmable for sleep-hibernate-on/off) is tucked neatly into the upper right corner of the keyboard. Supper fast WI-FI, solid video (thanks to the NVIDIA GeForce GTX GPU) which takes the burden away from the CPU allowing it to speed game play ), HDMI output, SD card slot, no CD/DVD drive though, but USB ports for connecting devices and external hard drives. Windows 10 HOME should be PRO for me too. NITRO Sense software will give the serious game player the edge over the competition. I know my grandsons will help me test this on ROBLOX. I'm more the graphics CAD design guy. CAD work is memory intense and the NITRO has both DDR-4 and a 8th generation Pentium 5 processor.

The price may be high for most consumers, but if you truly want a laptop that can game seriously, this is easily the best option. The 1050TI is no beast, but is more than capable of playing most games at Medium setting (mileage will vary of course). For night-owl, the backlit keyboard is a nice extra feature. The CPU is fine enough for casual video editing and rendering. While 256gb isn't much, the SSD is very fast and is worth it, as you can easily add another storage drive at a later date. The same can be said with the RAM, which is 8gb. It's fine, but can be upgraded as well. Summary: If you're looking for a gaming laptop and want to spend as little as possible, this is currently your best choice.

Ok so I actually exchanged my HP Envy for this laptop. Both were on sale for around 600 at the time and they're both normally around 800 dollar laptops. I went from gaming at the lowest settings possible to maxing out last gen games and playing this gen at medium settings. The cpu is basically an 7th gen i7. Since 8th gen got a core bump. i5s are now what i7 used to be. Quad core 3.4ghz turbo. The 1050ti has 4gb gddr5, which is better than the gtx 970 3.5 + 0.5 vram. It's about half as powerful as a gtx 970. But that's saying a lot, it can handle high texture loads and other things. This horsepower costs in heat. Acer packaged a nitro application that allows you to customize fan speeds. As long as you give this laptop room to breathe in your lap or on a desk with the nitro cooling on it'll be fine. I noticed fps drops in games, but it was my fault for putting the fan too close to a wall and it couldn't vent hot air properly. A lot of people do this on accident with consoles and such, just give them some room to breathe. Also heat isn't a problem if you turn on vsync and turn the graphics down to a point where it's not maxing out your gpu at 60fps. Just a tip. Anyways, I maxed out Bioshock 1 and 2 remastered. 60fps 1080p, it can do 60fps in 4k as well with drops when you look at the water effects if you plug it into a 4k TV or monitor with an hdmi. I love doing this with my laptop, it has great portability. The wifi is just as fast as plugging it in, i think it uses double antennas, i get a solid 60-100mb/s with no lag. Played resident evil 6 at a friend's house online. He was at his desktop and I was on my laptop. Solid 60fps again with no drops. The ssd equipped is small, but great for the OS. There's a slot on this version for a 2.5" sata drive, so throwing in an hdd or ssd is an option. It's just one screw away in an easy compartment. The ram is only 8gb ddr4, but it's future proof up to 32gb with two slots for 16gb sticks or whatever you'd like. I'm buying some once ram prices go down. Most likely that'll be next year since they've been artificially inflated for a long time. That 8 billion dollar lawsuit is gonna hurt. Overall, this thing is fast and with a nice graphics card it's pretty luxurious. Browsing and watching videos is easy, the cpu has Intel's built in video chip to save energy when you're not playing games. The 1050ti can be selected or not for playing games on an individual basis via the geforce control panel. The webcam is crap, and the speakers are on the bottom that's the only thing that sucks. But the speakers are loud and good quality at least. This thing beats the gtx 900 family when it comes to gaming. It's worth the price and if it's on sale it's a deal. Buy it.

This laptop is in incredible, especially for the price. It can run AAA games on med to high quality with no frame dropping. The screen it’s self is.. ok.. but not great. The typing feels amazing. The battery life is a bit on the pathetic side. It can get hot (I recommend getting a cooling table for it). It may have some flaws but the good outweighs the bad. The 1050 ti can run any game. The i5 8th gen prosessor is ideal for heavy gaming. And it has the capability to add a new hard drive/ssd and ram. Best laptop to get right now for under $1000.

Let me preface this by saying I've owned high end gaming laptops and basic business laptops so I'm gauging this one off my experience between them all. We got this for my college freshman as a way for him to join in with his dorm floor gaming groups without spending a bunch of money on a laptop. It was on sale for $600 and had decent specs so we though we'd give it a shot. I'm not a fan of Acer in general because of past experience, but couldn't pass up the price/specs relationship. He loves it. Says it does all he needs it to do and does it quickly. They play League of Legends which isn't a huge demand on a system, but he's played some FPS and said it holds up well with them as well (not on max settings, but at or above good quality). He says the screen is nice and clear, refresh rates are good, and speed is impressive (booting and processing). The dedicated graphics card is a must and does well with frame rates. Solid state drive is a little small, but entry level is as expected. His only complaint to this point is the weight (it's bulky) and the keyboard layout/appearance. Nothing major in any way. I think he'll upgrade the memory (8 is really bare minimum these days) and he'll use an external drive for data, but it supports those options according to specs. I would actually give it 4.5 stars, but that's not possible. It's a great compromise when you need something, but don't want to (or can't) spend the money other manufacturers require. My greatest concern (unfounded at this point) is the longevity of the product based on my experience with Acer in the past.

    Best configuration for the price

I build and configure enterprise computers professionally. The gaming laptop concept is new to me, so I read many of the reviews and also watch several youtube reviews before I made the purchase. (very helpful)I was not in the market but when I saw the black Friday price it was hard to resist. I don't play PC games anymore, but as soon as I heard Warcraft Frozen Throne will have a Reforge coming out for 2019, I had to look into a gaming laptop. The main difference I noticed between a gaming laptop and a regular laptop is the dedicated Nvidia Video card and a more pronounce cooling fan vents which makes sense for a more immersive gaming experience. The specs on this one Core i5 8300H, 256 SSD, 8GB of RAM and Nvidia 1050 Ti video card is what I was looking for. A big plus on the upgrade accessibility. If you need to upgrade the RAM, it's easily accessible without opening the entire bottom of the laptop. Same goes with adding a second SSD. Now on performance. The specs are great and the performance is what I expected. The laptop is fast with no issues on performance. Gaming is great and at times you will hear the fan for cooling, but it's not any louder than other laptops or desktop. I did have an issue with the Wifi driver just disappearing during the first few weeks of ownership a few times, so I recommend to create a restore point or get a 16GB back up USB for your W10 OS just in case. The issue hasn't happened since. I also have the wifi driver saved. You can get it from the Acer customer support site. Overall I'm very happy with the laptop and I could not find any gaming laptop anywhere close to this price relative to the specs and the real world performance more than satisfactory for gaming or daily computing work load. I recommend this laptop.

I'm expanding from traditional to digital art and I needed to upgrade my ten-yr-old computer. I was not thrilled with the invasive set-up of Microsoft Windows 10. I took their app off my phone right after I installed it. Honestly, our world is becoming too Orwellian. And I'm running the machine as much like Windows 7 as I can. But this is supposed to be about the computer. It is fine, but I am not in love with it. Can't stand the track pad-I use a USB mouse- and I haven't gotten used to the keyboard yet because of the placement of all the number keys and the delete key. It is heavy but solid. The battery life is horrible, 3+ hrs. My pen display monitor--an XP Pen Artist 12--was recognized immediately and works beautifully. There's a lot of lag with the stylus, but I don't know if that's the pen or my system. 8 gigs of RAM was plenty for Windows 7, but I'm going to upgrade to 16 gigs ASAP. I use several graphics programs at once and occasionally the system will freeze. Also, the SSD is too small and eventually I want to upgrade that as well. Fortunately, this computer has the slots for significant upgrades. I do like the solid build and I think it is a good machine. But my dream would have been something with a touch screen and stylus and all the bells and whistles. However, since I didn't have the budget for that, I'm grateful to have gotten the Nitro 5 for $200 off on Thanksgiving sale. The Best Buy guys were so helpful in finding this system for me. They steered me to this gaming computer to handle my art demands and it is working out fine. Short of spending thousands of dollars on a fancy artist's system, this will do.

Good laptop, sleek looking, decent battery life, i recommend but your Nitro Sense to max and turn on coolboost while gaming, if you won’t turn it to max you might experience some fps dropping and heat throttling. I recommend buy a separate mouse or gaming mouse if you’re gaming also a gaming keyboard because the keyboard on the laptop won’t help you full experience on gaming and it’s kinda annoying while you’re gaming.

Good performance for the price. I purchased this as a portable work computer for a small business. I wanted a discreet graphics card, as it sometimes runs a light cad/cam program, and does fine doing that. With the ssd it boots quick and responds well. The only thing I would improve is the feel and layout of the keyboard- it takes a little getting used to, as the feel of it is not quite what I’m used too, and the power/ del keys seem a little out of place. Overall the price paid for the performance is great.

This laptop out of the box is very smooth and quick. I have a 8700K desktop so I wanted a laptop that I could travel with and play sometimes. It has the same graphics card as my desktop (sadly) in which has been outstanding. Keyboard is very smooth and so far this laptop is perfect. Added a TB ssd with ease of 1 screw, ram is just as easy. Good buy!!! p.s. it is loud under some heat or heave gaming. No issues.

The Acer Nitro 5 is one the cheapest laptops with decent hardware. It has 1050ti with 4gb ram which plays every game I've thrown at it with good graphics performance. It has a back-lit keyboard making it easy to see while using at night. The thing that stuck out the most was the fact that I could a hard drive. It you buy the model with the 256 gb ssd then the where the hard drive would be is left empty and everything you need is there to install your own hard drive so you have more storage. It also has I/O including 3 usb type A's sd card reader headphone jack hdmi Ethernet port to speed up downloads and a even usb c.. It is a solid laptop but has some down sides starting with the build its not metal design which isn't terrible but it would make it little more durable. My next some what complaint is battery life. It does have a 4-cell battery which is bigger when compared to allot of thin and light laptops but when with powerful components comes the high power consumption. Full battery life for me is about gives me between 2 to 2 1/2 hours of usage. I think the device would also be improved by having a higher refresh rate display the nitro only has a 60hz display.

We shopped and compared many different computers, read reviews and looked for the best deal. We chose the Acer Nitro over all other brands we could have purchased. My son is very happy with this computer, graphics, speed and ease of use. the computer needs to be on a solid surface as the fans run often to maintain internal temperature. So far, so good. My daughter bought a small 13" Acer for college 5 years ago and is still running strong. No problems ever.

When looking for a gaming computer fo my husband, this one became the perfect option. It has a spare compartment for upgrading by adding a second hard drive, which we did with an SSD. The Memory can also be specked up if needed or desired. However, right out of the box, this is super quick and powerful. My husband is happy with how well it plays the games he enjoys. He likes the sharp lines, the red colors, and that this computer has the gaming computer “look.” The screen looks good, but of course not as high quality as other screens on the more expensive computers. The things that I would like to see upgraded: the keyboard is just a little mushy, but very usable. The bezels on the sizes and bottom could be trimmed for more viewing space. I do with the track pad were a little closer to the center of the keyboard. The computer is thick and bulky, which helps hold all the components, assist in the upgradablitly, and helps keep the cooling system working very well; however, this keeps the computer from being as portable as slimmer competitors. These are very minor complaints. They do not affect the overall performance of this machine and, for the price, I find it to be excellent. My husband is happy and so are our pockets.

My 9 yr old son is a heavy gamer. A bit embarassed to say, but probably like 3-4 hrs/day. He loves this machine for Fortnite and Roblox and streaming media. No lagging, hiccups, or anything. He's received several complements on the machine's appearance and cool light-up keyboard from friends. It's a bit heavy but hey, this thing has got a lot of power behind it. Very happy at this price point.

Bought this after I saw it on Linus Tech Tips. I'm really liking it so far. Plays Overwatch and Fortnite really well. The PCI SSD makes everything super snappy. The screen could be brighter, but is better than a lot at this price point. No problems whatsoever with temps. Overall, totally excellent value.

I'm gonna start with the good before I get to the bad. The good thing is, this is a hefty laptop. It can run every game I want it to and it can usually run them on the highest settings. It's not to loud, it doesn't overheat often, the battery last a good while.... It just took three tries to get to this. The laptop I am using now is currently my third copy of this model. The first one I got blackscreen after a week of use (a not too uncommon problem for this laptop in its early days.) luckily I could still return it in a new one. The second laptop was shipped promptly to me within a couple days, and it was missing the W key. The boys as geek squad told me they'd have to take the whole thing apart to put it back on, so it'd be best just to get a new one. When I finally got my third version, I was not only frustrated but worried that this one would have a similar fate. It's been a few months and the things been fine. I'm sure I just had a bit of bad luck getting two bad ones in a row (not the black screen issue, that ones happened to a lot of people in there first week) But I am overall satisfied with this product. Also minor nit-pick, I really don't love the glossy finish on the whole thing. Smudges too easily. Keep that in mind. But for the price you pay you get more than your moneys worth in my opinion in terms of power.

I'm an Independent Consultant and purchased this laptop to use for online teaching and video production work. I cannot say enough great things about it. Being an IT professional, I expected it to have at least one issue or glitch by now, but I have been proven wrong. I have this baby running several high CPU usage apps at the same time and it just keeps asking for more. It is super fast and extremely dependable. Finally, I look forward to going to my home office to work without being concerned that I'll have some computer problem during the day. I did upgrade it right away with 8 more GBs of RAM and an additional 1TB SSD drive. Acer made this incredibly easy to do by providing separate compartments on the bottom of the laptop (one for RAM, the other for an SSD or HDD). Both are easily accessible with just a screwdriver. Plug the new components in, screw the covers back on and viola - you're back in business. The Acer Nitro 5 automatically identified the new Kingston HyperX RAM (HX426S15IB2/8), but I did have to format and partition the Samsung 860 EVO SSD (MZ-76E1T0B/AM) before it recognized it. However, this was fairly easy to do using instructions I found on the internet. I wish I had enough money to buy another one of these!

I picked several options from browsing Best Buy online and went to the store to see them in person. This laptop out shined them all. It was a good price and has great performance! Been using it daily but only have done some light gaming but it worked fine for that too. I have never had a computer that booted as fast as this one. Having the solid state drive is not to be undervalued. It is quiet, and super fast! Frankly I am very impressed with this laptop. Battery life is fine for what I need it to do, which is working for short amounts of time in my lounge chair suffering the web where I am not plugged in. I cannot tell any difference in performance unlike my last laptop that felt very sluggish on battery power. Yeah, it is a bit lacking in strength in the lid. It is a bit flimsy. I am being careful with it but so far no issues. For this price point, it is an outstanding value with a great processor and and potent video card to boot. A great buy!

I bought this laptop about a month ago and it is a great buy for a value gaming laptop. The SSD keeps the machine running fast and I run all my games of an external 2 TB hard drive to keep the SSD space clear. The graphics of the 1050ti are great even for modern games and the screen is crisp. Only reason that I dont put 5 stars is that when I am running the laptop hard in game it can heat up a little and the fans sound like a jet engine trying to keep it cool. It is remedied with a good cooling pad but otherwise it can get a little loud and warm. Otherwise a great buy and I'm very happy with it!

Very nice laptop with decent specs. It's fast. Only concerns was the 3 hour battery life when browsing the internet, 1 hour and a half for gaming maybe. I keep it plugged in at all times anyway so that might not be an issue. It's definitely heavy too! Overall if you want a budget machine with decent specs and mobility, this is for you.
