INTRODUCTION: I have owned two Chromebooks prior to the R11. I am familiar with the Chrome OS ecosystem, what it has to offer, and where it falls short. BUILD QUALITY (3/5): The build quality of the R11 is average, at best. It has a patterned aluminum cover/lid, but it doesn’t make the device feel any bit premium, and I wouldn’t count on it providing any additional protection to the display. The unit I received has misaligned hinges, which causes the device to rock a bit at certain angles—in addition to being an eyesore. That being said, I don’t feel as though it will cause any harm to the device in the long-term. I had no issues with flipping the display 180 degrees. Typing on the keyboard was fine, but I personally felt as though the keys could have had less resistance or bit more vertical displacement. I had to press harder on these compared to other keyboards I’ve tried on Chromebooks around this price range. DISPLAY (3/5): The 11.6” display runs at 1366x768—resulting in 135 ppi (pixels-per-inch). Comparatively, a 13.3” display at 1920x1080 results in 165 ppi. The R11 display is adequate at this resolution—text is sharp enough to avoid complaining, and viewing images and videos is enjoyable. That is, unless you’re trying to use it in direct sunlight. This display is quite reflective, so you won’t be using this much in direct sunlight. With a bit of shade, you’ll be fine. Indoors, the display is adequate and provides adequate brightness. The display is also quite reflective and is also a smudgy fingerprint magnet, which is why indoor use in moderate lighting conditions is ideal. As for the touch screen, it works quite well. If anything, Chrome OS needs more refinement and more features to really utilize the touchscreen. Multi-touch worked without issue. However, modern web content isn’t really suited to touch screens, so it’s definitely a bit awkward to have a touch screen, at the moment. PERFORMANCE (2/5): I really can’t give this Chromebook a 3 because there are older, cheaper Chromebooks that outperform this more expensive R11. The Intel Celeron N3050 is really a bottom-bin Intel Atom, more than it is a Celeron. These fanless processors (aside from the Core M series) don’t come close to the U-series Celerons. Sure, you’ll get more battery life, but what is that worth if it’s a pain to use the device? With my bookmarks, caching, history, extensions, etc. that is associated to my Google account, this Chromebook could not handle more than a few tabs without throwing a fit. When I used Guest mode, the Chromebook performed adequately with 4 tabs—to the point where scrolling was not abysmal. That being said, I had much better performance on a 13.3” 1080p Chromebook using the Intel Celeron N2840 and 4GB of RAM—which was the same price as the R11. Even Acer’s own C720 outperforms the R11. BATTERY LIFE (4/5): The battery life on this Chromebook doesn’t quite stand up to some other contenders, but with light processor usage, it shouldn’t have any problem lasting throughout the day before needing a charge. However, the idle drain is not very good. For a fanless design, you would expect low power consumption when the device is idle, but you will want to turn the device when you aren’t using it for long periods of time—otherwise you will be saying goodbye to 10-20% of your battery. CONCLUSION: Over all, the R11 is an average product. It doesn’t really get any high marks, and its touch screen really isn’t useful with the current state of the web and Chrome OS. Once Play Store integration with Chrome OS becomes stable, these touch screens will make more sense. But until that day comes, the vision for this Chromebook is very fragmented.

This Chrome book is piece of junk, very cheaply made. Right hinge came apart in 6 months. Contact Acer and they want me to pay for repair. Nothing is damaged, cover popped open and the hinge came out of its place, cheap plastic parts. Do not buy and Acer.

    Much Better Than a Tablet

I was in the market to replace my 5 year old iPad and was frustrated by its short usable life as I only really used it for emails and occasionally surfing the internet. I'm mainly a desktop computer user. My son, a tech person, raved about his chromebook and how great it is. He told me how easy it is to use and really doesn't break down or get slow with all of those annoying Windows and Apple updates as it uses the chrome operating system. After borrowing his old model chromebrook, still as fast as ever, I was sold. I also like having a keyboard to type emails. I decided to upgrade to a touch screen chromebook to maximize my options. I could not be happier with my purchase. Very glad that I did not buy a tablet or small Windows laptop. Highly recommend the Acer chromebook. I chose Acer because my son's old Acer chromebook has held up so well.

I bought this to replace my previous laptop that was a windows lenovo gaming bulky laptop and honestly was too much of a hassle to maintain the system. I am so glad that I went with a Chromebook versus a windows laptop! I do not have to worry about virus software, I have access to all android apps, it is user friendly once you accept that you are not dealing with a typical windows computer, has an HDMI port for presentation or video viewing, has a bright screen as I am typing this in the dark, responsive touchscreen, lightweight, and the battery lasts a surprisingly long time. My biggest issue is not having icons on the desktop, organizing files is a bit challenging and can be confusing as you have your google drive AND you have the storage on this device. My advice is just store everything, like schoolwork, on google drive which seemed to work for me. Microsoft word does not agree with this device at all. After paying for a subscription, I am unable to use the app because it crashes, freezes, or expects me to log in to Microsoft over and over and clears my previous work. All of this I have tried to remedy by uninstalling, reinstalling the app, and rebooting the device, all fruitless endeavors. Therefore, my purchase of the Microsoft subscription was useless and I highly recommend using google docs, as it can almost do everything Microsoft word can do WITHOUT the hassle! I would purchase this again given the option!

We haven’t tried to do any work on this without an internet connection yet so don’t know how useful it is in that capacity. For middle school my child’s class is using Google docs and slides for most projects and it works quick & easy. She hasn’t used much technology in the past but it must be intuitively easy to use because she hasn’t needed any help. The flip to tablet capability & touchscreen is nice. It is lightweight and small enough that with a neoprene sleeve it still slips into the stretch pocket on the outside of her zipper folder (trapper keeper style).

Overall, I am extremely happy with my purchase. The computer is lightweight and strong. It is a perfect starting computer for my nephews in middle school. Everything is connected to Google for ease of mind, including apps and documents. Touch screen is amazingly great and fast. Speakers have an awesome sound. Extremely easy to use as a laptop or tablet.

My daughter uses google doc for her 6 grade and to 8th. They use chrome books at school and at home she tried using my mac book. But there was always a problem with how fast it was and with all kinds of viruses. So I got her this chrome book for school work. Well she uses it for everything. She plays games has different apps and she can use it like a pad because of the flip of the cover and the touch screen. So far it is wonderful, fast and easy to use. My daughter is 11 and I am glad that I did not spent almost a grand on a laptop and got her this on sale in Black Friday. I never used this company before and was skeptical but it seems to be great and she just loves it. I even take it and use it to go on web fast. Great device. And great price.

I bought this for my wife. She has a smartphone, Kindle Fire, laptop and desktop. Why would she want this Chromebook? This thing is light enough to take anywhere much more easily than a bulky laptop. She likes to take it into our kids' bedroom at night to type in her journal as the kids fall asleep. She loves that the Chromebook can bend backwards to get the keyboard out of the way so it feels more like a tablet. The touch-screen is a generous size. My wife loves browsing through Pinterest and then showing her friends what she finds as she plans out activities in our living room. It doesn't matter that her friends are sitting across the room on a different couch. It feels like our computers and tablets are simply evolving to become more convenient and streamlined. I'd say if we started all over, I would get my wife a smartphone, a desktop and a Chromebook. She'd be all set and wouldn't really need a laptop or Kindle.

I went into the store to purchase a traditional laptop for my son, the staff member that helped us explained the benefits of this Chromebook and I thought we'd give it a try. With that price point, I decided to buy one for each of the kids...they LOVE them! The size and weight are perfect and the Gorilla glass is a great quality to have, especially with kids! It's incredibly fast, so fast the I sneak them to use instead of my laptop! We all love the touchscreen feature and the ability to flip and turn it to use easel style or as a tablet. I just may have to go pick one up for myself!

    Comfortable And Great Sound

It seems that everyone is coming out with true wireless earbuds lately, so how does one brand/model stand out? Great sound quality, solid connectivity and a few uncommon features. These Sony buds hit the target on most everything. They sound great, are comfortable and have a nice charging case to supplement the built-in charge. What these buds have that most others don't is active noise cancellation and it works great! Of course, that comes at the expense of battery life which is a modest 3 hours on a charge, but the improvement in sound quality is noticeable. The charging case is a tad large but the shape is comfortable to fit in a pocket. It's metal and has a nice cool to the touch feeling. A minor complaint on the case is that it tends to topple over when the lid is open due to the weight of the substantial dual-hinged lid. The buds tend to stick out from the ears a bit as to make them noticeable but not so much as they're uncomfortable or unwieldy. The voice prompts are nice, too. As with many buds of this class, they have an app that allows for various adjustments. While other true wireless buds advertise for sports use, these are aimed more for daily use while traveling around town or just listening to music. I appreciate that as I don't always want to look like I'm on the way to or from the gym when wearing my earbuds. Overall, a nice pair of great-sounding buds. I'd give them a 5-star rating if they had a tad longer battery life or a smaller case, but they are definitely worth a look (and listen).

I was looking for an inexpensive computer solution for my teenage daughter so that she can do her schoolwork research and papers on google docs. The touchscreen and multi-format options make this great and very portable. The battery is great, lasting several hours without charging. The software is very easy and simple to use. Not much of a learning curve for people who are used to iOS or Microsoft products. The platform is limited but expanding rapidly. It’s perfect for our needs.

My 10 year daughter loves it, I love it too. Sleek, light weight, and nice white color. She has all the apps she needs for school assignments - she is an avid writer, and likes to watch videos (YouTube). As a parent you can configure and establish limits/controls so kids are safe from going into nasty places over the Internet. The fact that is foldable and can turn into a tablet, makes it even cooler (it's touchscreen). I know there are probably newer, better models out (she got this for Christmas last year), but if you are looking for a Chromebook this is definitely a pretty good choice.
