Customers are saying

Customers enjoy the XPG SPECTRIX RGB GAMING S40G Series SSD's read speeds, but some have experienced slower-than-expected write speeds, particularly as the drive fills. Several users reported significantly reduced write performance after a substantial amount of data was written to the drive, impacting their workflow. The slower write speeds were a concern for some users, especially those involved in music production or other applications sensitive to storage performance. While some found the speed acceptable, others felt the performance did not meet expectations.

The more data you add the slower it gets (SataIII)

I'm upgrading from an 2TB Adata XPG SX8200Pro to this 4TB Adata Spectrix RGB. Once 1.9TB of data was copied to the 4TB drive I immediately felt a slowness when loading sample keyboard and piano sounds in DAW to play. I felt as if I went back to SSD SataIII speeds. (SSD wasn't bad when that's all we had but you can't get use to almost instantaneous sample loading with NVMe then go backwards). Next I loaded a song I was working on the previous day with the 2TB SX8200pro and I waited in frustration while watching the audio files and misc loading. The SX8200pro was snappy and fast loading this same song, the 4TB is too slow for me to deal with even if I'm gaining 2TB more. Disk speeds listed below confirmed my suspicion about the 4TB dropping down to what felt like SSD Sata III speeds. (Both drives were running at x2 pcie slot speed vs x4 due to add'l tech installed in adjacent slots at the time). Comparison: 4TB Spectrix (Empty) 1259mb/s W 1487mb/s R 4TB Spectrix (1.9TB full) 480mb/s W 443mb/s R 2TB 8200Pro (Empty & 1.9TB full) 1514 mb/s W 1641mb/s R I installed the 2TB in x4 pcie slot speed to copy from and the speeds were 2650mb/s W 3164mb/s R. ** Btw, high temperatures were not a factor or issue. I thought I was getting a bargain at $400 compared to similar capacity drives but I can't deal with the slowness when it comes to music production. The Adata 8200Pro was 95% full and it was still fast and snappy, Adata needs to make a 4TB SX8200Pro. If you're coming from a regular Hard Drive or need a higher capacity SSD considering SSD prices are inline with NVme then this drive may not feel that slow to you. I hope this helps someone else and maybe save someone in my situation the hassle of the wrong tool for the job.

      Hello EWJR,

We are sorry to hear about your negative experience with the XPG S40G 4TB NVMe M.2 SSD.
These are abnormal speeds that should not be experienced even before reaching 80% filled capacity, it does seem like the drive may be defective.
If you still have the drive we would be more than happy to assist you in replacing the drive. Please reach out to us via the support email at:

    Mining Chia? Don't use this!

This is probably the best deal for a 4TB NVMe M.2 drive. If you're using it just regular drive (games, photos, etc), I think it would be fine. If you're mining Chia with sustained usage...prepare for headaches. I had two of these and both started having issues at the same time. Maybe there are bad sectors. I'm seeing the issue on both Windows and Ubuntu. It's frustrating. Also, under sustained use, this drive gets HOT. I removed the plastic shroud, which is fine because LEDs are on card and unaffected by removal of the plastic part. Then I put a heatsink on it. I also have a Corsair Force 1TB and that thing has been impressive. I'll be trying to get more of those

I thought I was getting a deal, but it doesn't mean anything if the drive dies after barely using it. When first installed, I got good speeds from my tests, ~2100MB/s write and read. Then I spent a few hours copying about 3.5TB of data over. After that, the speed PLUMMETED to ~30MB/s. It was fine when empty, then a joke when almost full. I couldn't get it to go any faster after that. And the stick was HOT during use (metal part of the cover). At one point I unplugged it to cool down, but when I reinstalled the drive, the system could no longer see it. I couldn't even reinitialize it. In the end, I couldn't get to any of the data. This was all in the same day! Perhaps just the drive I got was defective, but now I'm not looking to chance it again with this model. On the plus side, the colorful lights kept working....

ADATA claims this 4TB drive has a 3000 MB/s sustained write speed. Wanting to verify their claims, for both speed and capacity, I ran a test that filled the drive with data, then read the data to make sure it was good. The write test started out at just over 1000 MB/s - which is nowhere near the claimed speed, but still kind of fast. It kept up that speed pretty well, for about the first TB, before it started really slowing down. By the time the drive was full, it was writing at 200 MB/s. That's 20% of the initial speed, and 7% of the advertised speed. Read speeds were only slightly higher than the write speeds, less than 220 MB/s at the end. I'll be returning this.

You might have seen information online suggesting this is TLC NAND. It might have been at one point, but I can confirm that it is Micron QLC NAND now. Not that I truly expected it to be TLC given the price, and ADATA's recent reputation for changing the specs of their products. Shouldn't make a difference if used as just a storage drive though. Drive does get hot, over 70C even under light use, and I didn't even bother to actually test this thing. The integrated "heatspreader" was less of a heatspreader and just something to diffuse the LEDs. It was very easy to just peel it off, and put my motherboard M.2 heatsink over it, which lowered the temperature to 40C. Get this if you want a lot of M.2 NVME storage for cheap.

Huge and very fast NVME M.2 SSD

It's a huge and very fast NVME M.2 SSD. It's last-gen with PCI 3.0, but I can't tell the difference. I copied my boot drive over so it boots from this drive now. It's at least twice as fast as my much older M.2 drive that I was using, and 4 times as big. Couldn't beat the price. Very satisfied.

Running fast and cool. With intensive use I get around 45C max. It is running under my GPU so not the best nor worst condition. Read speed up to spec, write speed a little less than advertised but still good.

I thought I got a bargain but I was totally wrong. This "SSD" turned out to be much slower than a regular HDD. Several symptoms: 1. Extremely slow, both in terms of read and write. It is even slower than my external HDD. 2. If you open a folder with thousands of files, it takes minutes to load the files and half of them cannot load the thumbnails and show as corrupted. 3. If you would like to open a file larger than 1GB, after several tens of seconds you got it crashed. And then, you can not see your hard drive anymore in the explorer! You have to reboot the OS. To sum up, this is an entire failure and avoid this!

Terrible drive, do not buy. I set up downloads for my Steam & Origin library after purchase & went to bed. I woke up to the drive not being able to be read by Windows & had to reformat. This was after writing less than 2TB on a 1gbps internet connection. This was on a brand new 5950x gaming build. After I get home today I will be taking it to Best Buy for a return.
