    Alien in 4k

Ridley Scott created an all time classic Horror-Sci Fi film with Alien. A group of space shippers gets a signal from a baren planet and go to investigate only to get a face hugger stuck to John Hurt. There’s nothing more iconic than seeing the egg and the face hugger for the first time. Nothing like that had been seen before and it shocked audiences the first time people saw it. The story actually revolves around a company hoping to exploit the alien. This would be copied in subsequent Alien films and played upon the Frankenstein theme that messing with nature can only go wrong. Alien is one of those must see movies. The mood it set. The imagery it created and more are unforgettable.

I was excited to find out that this classic was getting a 40th anniversary release. Some people aren't fond of the way this steelbook looks. I am not one of them. I think it's gorgeous!

This movie is always worth a watch, and now to have it in 4K is excellent. This is the best it’s ever looked, and looks like it was filmed last year. Great picture quality! Slip cover looks awesome also.

Great movie. Debatable whether the sequel is better. The 4K transfer is stunning. Never looked better. Now let’s just get Aliens on 4 Blu Ray and we’re good. Did not come in a slip cover which was disappointing.

    A 5 star movie, a 3 star dip "collector's art"

To begin, the review score is based solely upon THIS version of the blu ray. It's important to note that while the review shows up for the blu ray version of Alien, (because it IS) it is NOT what was promoted. If you're looking for a blu ray version of Alien, of course, it's recommended, but as it was promoted- both in the ad and on floor displays- a "collector's art edition", it feels lazily put together. (attempting to place an image with this review). As a HUGE Alien fan, seeing a "Collector's Art Edition" of Alien on blu ray at $7.99, I was excited to add this to my collection of Alien/ Aliens movies and memorabilia. (Also grabbed the Predator blu ray- another movie I'm crazy about). The fact is, both art pieces offered are actually pretty cool, and at $7.99, I didn't expect anything extra beyond the art- but in both cases, while the art was simply printed on a thin piece of cardboard, given a touch of stickem in the center, then applied to the respective movies. The stickem itself wasn't even enough to hold it to the blu ray case. The cardboard the art was printed on was too big to either slide inside the wrap around the case, or be inserted within the blu ray case to take the place of the basic "regular" art of the standard blu ray within. So, was left with a piece of cardboard with beautiful art that wasn't in any way attached to the blu ray case whatsoever, or able to be inserted into the case. Ended up having to use a dab of super glue on each corner of the art and apply it myself- which, unfortunately, gives a stain through the white part of the cardboard (in Alien's case, the entire art is white). Now, as a reference point to this, Fox released a Collector's Edition art variant of Alien exclusive to Comic-Con 2014, along with a small handful set aside for online ordering- a version I eagerly grabbed up, at only $20. (Included a limited edition (of #500) 11"X17" wall art of that blu ray cover, as well). In that case, the CE Variant was a completely new wrap/ insert for the blu ray case. For some, if you're looking for Alien on blu ray, this is wonderful. You can, if you don't care about the variant cover being on a piece of cardboard that's not going to stay attached to the case- there's no reason not to own this. But, if you're like me, (and, probably who this art variant was geared towards,) you need to be aware of this before purchasing. Perhaps consider framing the cardboard art or hanging it on a wall, but if you want it to remain a part of the actual blu ray, you're going to have to do some work on your own- and find something other than glue- as I said, it left a discoloration through the cardboard- it's not atrocious, but it was upsetting that this wasn't taken care of on the production of this to begin with- and it was encountered on both movies I purchased with the art variant. Note: Alien DOES include a digital HD version to add to your cloud movies- Predator does not, so there was a little extra value in the Alien blu ray.

I received my movie from curbside pick up which I love cause of how things are with the virus. But I peeled the pickup sticker off an it removed a lot of the art work on my slip cover an as someone who loves slip covers on my movies this was just a let down maybe in the future they can put the sticker on the movie itself!

Best Buy curbside stuck the order sticker directly onto the slipcover and when removed, tore half the back info off. If having the slipcover in good condition matters to you, I would not use their COVID safety measures of curbside to avoid this issue.

Alien. In space, no one can hear you scream. A special film chosen for preservation in the National Film Registry for its importance. A film that was the antithesis of the hopeful, futuristic, fairy tale galaxy crafted by George Lucas' Star Wars only 2 years prior. It wasn't knights versus a big bad threatening the galaxy using a bright palette with allies formed from colorful by colorful, friendly aliens. This was a lived-in, used world where space truckers fought for their lives within a haunted house from a force of nature that threatened them personally, whose only alien didn't have any color and whose only alliance to our heroes is as sustenance. Alien is an AMAZING film. (And spawned a sequel equally as amazing that changed the entire series' genre not only well, but on a scale of success not known prior or since). It's a film that, 40 full years later, remains amazing with no asterisks to that "amazing" needed. It's not "amazing, but..." Every area of this film that you would have forgiven for aging over 4 decades; a script, special FX, the technology used in the film, the technology used in creating the film, the score... every single aspect has, almost half a century later, remain as something you could expect and be satisfied with in a film released this week. (One might argue the "technology being used in the film/ by characters point," but this is a flawed argument. These were "space truckers," low-end not kept current in tech, often using and re-using tech just to get by. Fun fact: the Nostromo, based on lore, was to have had TWO escape pods, but one was awaiting repairs to make it functional again, hence why there was only one available, with only a capacity for three, despite seven crewmembers). This 4K HDR version is gorgeous, and makes a terrifying movie even moreso. Not only was the facelift beyond perfect, but there's a noticeable increase of the picture's size: you can actually view more of each image. It is given a treatment worthy of its place in film history. The extras are good, but not overwhelming in the least. Nothing MAJORLY noteworthy is here that you haven't seen before... except... And this is NOT mentioned on the list of extras, NOR ON THE DISC ITSELF. Redeeming your digital copy THROUGH MOVIES ANYWHERE (don't do it through Vudu, which only redeems as 1080, as well) not only redeems the 4K copy, but includes the SIX original short films created by fans and chosen as winners by FOX. Again, the 4K and 6 films do NOT show on Vudu, ONLY on Movies Anywhere. (Of fun note, the short film "Alone" features James Paxton, son of the late, great Bill Paxton, who played fan favorite "Hudson" in the sequel, Aliens). So, why is Alien a difficult review? Because, in the process of upgrading to 4K, for whatever reason, Ridley Scott, who oversaw the process, chose NOT to upgrade to 4K the scenes that are added/ replace the scenes that make up the Director's Cut version of the film. There's a noticeable difference in watching the DC and seeing these scenes play compared to the rest of your viewing. As Ridley Scott has said that the Director's Cut is more publicity stunt than his vision, which is the one released to theaters, it's not necessarily surprising that he'd not spend the effort on these scenes, but it's disappointing when it comes to viewing the included Director's Cut due to the changes in quality. Even had Scott not wanted to oversee the upgrade on those scenes, it would have been appreciated had FOX just done the upgrade themselves to avoid this problem. While many still prefer the Theatrical Cut, there's nothing inherently wrong with the DC, nor necessarily better. It is, however, a wonderful complimentary viewing experience as a "what might have been," as well as giving us a view of what happened to both the Dallas and Brett characters after their abductions... Which, despite not being necessary, also offers an equally creepy scene as the rest of the film. Outside this one glaring flaw, watching Alien has never looked so good.
