I’m not too fond of Dell’s Alienware line of computers. Its desktop products are probably one of the more disliked products out there with regards to design, serviceability, and pricing. So when I picked up this laptop, I went in with low expectations. The majority of the hardware specifications can be viewed on this product page. But there are little details that I will point out in order to better inform buyers of what they need to know. Also, most of the hardware can be configured at Dell’s website directly. However, there are some combinations that are not possible with their configuration tool. I found it strange that this laptop model cannot be matched at their site. Getting inside the laptop is fairly straightforward. There are 8 total screws, 4 of which cannot be fully removed (ie. capped). You may need a thin plastic pry tool in order to carefully remove the cover. Once that’s done, you’ll have access to whatever hardware that can be upgraded or replaced. There are 2 SODIMM slots, both occupied by DDR5 4800 memory made by Micron. A single M.2 SSD made by SK Hynix, model PC801, occupies a M.2 slot, with an additional M.2 slot available for additional storage. The M.2 SSD has a head spreader that is mounted with 2 screws, something you’ll need to keep in mind when you’re installing a new M.2 drive. Other than memory and storage, there isn’t anything else. The Ryzen 9 6900HX is not the top AMD CPU in the laptop market. But it is definitely fast enough. While it does come with its own integrated GPU, a nvidia RTX 3070Ti is paired with this for better gaming performance. Considering the display panel is 1080p with a crazy 360Hz refresh rate (overkill in my opinion), it should be powerful enough to handle just about any games being thrown at it. While I do not have the most demanding games to benchmark the graphics performance, coupled with limited time, it handles the two games I play the most – Guild Wars 2 and Genshin Impact. Testing network performance is a bit tricky. Despite the fact that it has an Ethernet port for wired networking, I opted to test its WiFi performance. It is capable of WiFi 6 but I have no WiFi 6 router or access point to use it on. However, even using the 5GHz band and a link speed of just over 800 megabit per second, I can only manage to squeeze out up to 650 megabit per second with direct line of sight. And this is sourced from a desktop hard drive connected over Ethernet. The keyboard feels like it uses a traditional membrane and it’s lit by RGB lighting. The lighting can be controlled via software and each individual key can be set to a specific color. The keys have a bit of travel which is nice, as I am never fond of or a fan of low profile keyboards commonly found in laptops. Even though the laptop is 17 inches in class, there is no number pad to the right. It’s not a deal breaker and I doubt it’ll be used in a gaming environment. By default, the function keys are set to multimedia key controls. Flipping this to the function key is as simple as holding the “Fn” key and pressing “Esc.” Speakers in laptops have been the one constant in that it is rarely ever good. This is no different. The speakers are down firing and do not sound all that good. It doesn’t seem to handle low frequencies well and is at best passable for simple media consumption. If you really need to consume media or play any games, you’re better off using proper headphones using the headphone jack or through other means (Bluetooth or USB). Using this laptop is a bit of a hit or miss. On one hand, its large size (plus a large 240w AC brick) can be unwieldy for portability. Yet at the same time, its large size can be good when you don’t want to haul around a traditional desktop computer. Is it the best laptop out there? That remains to be seen. It does have one of the top AMD laptop CPUs and it is paired with a very good RTX 3070 Ti GPU. The asking price for this laptop appears to be in line to what other competitors are offering. And I am unsure if it is worth recommending it. I admit the hardware is very beefy. And it puts my aging desktop of 7+ years to shame. Verdict: Viable candidate for purchase but shop around before deciding The Good: Very fast AMD Ryzen 9 paired with 3070 Ti, high refresh rate display The Bad: Sound quality from built in speakers, configuration app to customize RGB lighting for keyboard The Ugly: Unknowingly drained the battery into Windows shutdown while poking around

Terrible. I have wanted an Alienware my whole life. I finally spend the money, and what a disappointment :-( I have had this laptop 2 months, and just had to take it in to Geek Squad due to receiving a battery error. Apparently the battery needs to be replaced after 2 months. It has to be shipped to Alienware to be repaired under the manufacturers warranty. A minimum of 2 weeks to repair. I use this laptop to run World of Warcraft & DayZ. My Acer Predator lasted 2 years and cost half the price of this one. Hopefully this helps someone considering this product.

Alienware name to gaming is a name like no other! I have known the Alienware name to be the best computer in town for gaming since the year 2000! This Laptop is NO different. lets get the specs out of the way you get: 17.3 inch Full HD screen with 360 hz- and about 350 nits of brightnessnon touch with web cam AMD Ryzen 9 6900HX CPU (the best AMD CPU to date) NVIDIA Geforce RTX 3070Ti GPU with 8GB dedicated memory 16GB of DDR5 Ram (expandable to 32 with an extra Ram Slot) 1 TB SSD (expandable thanks to the extra M2 slot) Back lit RGB Keyboard HDMI and USB C ports a huge 240 watts power brick (you aren't moving this baby anywhere) Build Quality This laptop is built like a tank, it is heavy and sturdy. the hinges feels great. you can open it with one hand by lifting the screen up from the middle. the color is very nice. the mattish black with the number 17 etched on the back with the Alienware head logo on the back and on the power button look great. the ventilation holes on the bottom and the backlit ring also look wonderful. Software: this comes with Windows 11 home with windows hello and minimal amount of bloatware Upgradability: you can upgrade the Ram and SDD on this laptop. to get to the inside all you have is 8 Philips screws that are taken out easily. and you will be able to upgrade both in less than 10 minutes of time if needed. Usage and feel: the touch pad is OK, the keyboard feels well but I wish they had a num pad considering the size of this thing. the RGB backlit is customizable. the palm rest feels good but it will need to be cleaned all the time. the volume is high but the sound quality is OK. gaming I am using this and Comparing it to my Asus TUF gaming which has a 12th Gen I7 processor with 16 GB DDR5 Ram and an NVIDIA RTX 3070 and let me tell you, It night and day difference. Yes the Alienware is almost double the price but it is also much much faster that a comparable specs laptop with a bigger screen. fan noise and heat are very much acceptable for a laptop of this size and specifications. they are indeed better than the comparable intel CPU's of the same class. overclocking options are limited and locked by Dell. All games I played were played on high settings and I had zero issues or lag whatsoever. Games played were Microsoft Flight simulator, Assasin Creed Odyssy, Apex Legends, Tomb Raider. I really like this laptop and I think it is something that will last a few years with a memory and SSD upgrade down the road. Another thing I never mentioned is how good (and replaceable) the Wifi card is. I think this laptop is a home run for Alienware and the only things I wished were available at this price is a 4K Screen with a fingerprint physical security option. Other than that, this laptop is a home run!

Alienware m17 R5 is all about performance!

The Alienware m17 R5 17.3-inch gaming laptop is another great product in the Alienware lineup. I have been looking for a gaming laptop for awhile but hadn’t found one with the right specifications to price. The m17 R5 definitely hits the mark. Discussion: • Unboxing – I enjoyed the unboxing process of this laptop. It only had necessary packaging which is not only great for the environment but great for not filling up my garbage/recycle can. It comes with the computer enclosed in a cardboard shell with foam padding on top. On the lefthand side is a small box containing the power cord and brick. • Display – One of the things I was looking for in a gaming laptop was screen size. I am so glad I waited for one with a 17.3-inch screen and 360 Hz FHD display. While the large screen size does make its portability a little more challenging, it is much more convenient than lugging my desktop around to friends. The 360 Hz refresh rate is great; however, I have not been able to take full advantage of it since I sit around 200-250 fps at max settings at 1080p. One area of improvement with the display would be to make it 1440p and OLED instead of LED. This LED screen suffers from backlight bleed, especially noticeable at the edges in dark environments. • Processor – The AMD 9 6900HX processor is an absolute beast for mobile platforms. It is an 8 core 16 thread processor that will handle pretty much any task you throw at it with ease. Those of you who are content creators, coders, gamers, students, or entrepreneurs, this will work great for you on the go. • RAM – This gaming laptop comes with 16 GB of DDR5 4800 RAM. While I would prefer 32 GB for more intensive applications such as photo editing, it is something that could be upgraded later. • NVMe SSD – I am glad this came with a 1 TB M.2 drive. There are many competitor gaming laptops that have 250-500 GB drives which to me is silly given how big games have become (cough cough Call of Duty). This is a great choice by Alienware to not skimp on the drive size. • GPU – The Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070Ti graphics card is really in the sweat spot for 1080p gaming. Given it is a mobile GPU it doesn’t perform quite as well as its desktop equivalent but can more than handle games at 1080p. I play primarily FPS games (Valorant/Apex/etc) and have been getting around 200-250 fps with near or max settings. I debated looking for a laptop with a 3080 but I don’t think the increase in price is worth the marginal improved performance, especially at 1080p. • Dolby Atmos Surround Sound and Dolby Vision HDR – The speakers themselves are average at best; however, when Dolby Atmos is paired my gaming headphones, the sound was great. Dolby Vision HDR seems to work at promised when supported. Overall, I am a big fan of the Alienware m17 R5 gaming laptop. It does everything I need it to do and can replace my desktop gaming computer when I am on the go. I own many Alienware products (ie: OLED monitor, keyboard, etc) and I have never been disappointed. This is another Alienware product that lives up to its expectation of being great.

Absolute BEAST of a Gaming Laptop!

The Alienware M17 R5 - Dark side of the moon is an absolute monster of a gaming laptop. It has everything I think you'd possibly ever need in a gaming system and more. Initially unboxing the computer was packaged very well with a nice padded buffer. Initial setup only took a few minutes and we were up and running with new Windows 11. I liked the fact that the computer isn't stuffed with a bunch of useless software that I have to end up scrubbing off the computer. Windows 11 is a much different feel than past OS's but I am loving it so far. Only thing I did notice with initial installation is the 3070ti didn't have the correct drivers installed, so I had to download the Nvidia drivers and we were off and running! The laptop itself isn't the most portable coming in at 7.3 pounds, but if you're purchasing this laptop you probably already anticipate that with a 17 inch screen. The LED Full HD (1920x1080) screen is very bright and crisp but I have noticed a little bit of bleed on the screen at times, but nothing that hinders the overall performance. The processor is a monster, the 6900HX can handle everything and anything with an 8 core 16 thread processor topping out a 4.9GHZ (INSANITY). I am also a professional photographer and video editor and it renders video insanely fast compared to my old pc. The ram is 16 GB of DDR5 which should be sufficient for most all games and editing programs and I believe can be upgraded if you're needing more! The 1tb SSD is blazing fast as well. Anyone who has never had an SSD hard drive is surely missing out! The 3070TI graphics card is an absolute beast as well. I loaded up APEX legends and maxed out all the setting and the laptop handled it beautifully. Also played Red Dead Redemption 2 which I consider to be a very graphics intense game and it didn't even flinch. 200-250 FPS is absolutely insane on APEX legends and smokes anything my Xbox one X can deliver! The laptop comes with 4 USB ports and a dedicated HDMI and Ethernet cable. Only thing I wish it did come with would have been a card reader. The keyboard is very nice and responsive and you can edit the color scheme through the Alienware app. The Alienware command center also lets you customize and tweak your GPU and CPU as well to your likings, but honestly the computer is an absolute beast and I haven't really had to adjust much! Overall I have been incredibly impressed with this Laptop. I ran a GPU benchmark on the PC which I find useful to see how well my computer is setup and the results were mind blowing. UFO for all three categories meaning this computer is going to perform through the roof!! I would highly recommend this laptop to anyone looking for a very impressive 17 inch gaming laptop. It has everything you could want and then some for all your gaming needs!

PROS: - Unboxing and setup is super simple! All that is inside is the laptop and the power cord, so overall it was an easy process. On top of that, setting up laptops via Windows 11 is really straight forward and makes it a smooth process. - The build and quality of this laptop is really high end! Has a futuristic gaming design to it that is really appealing to gamers, nothing about it feels cheap, and for being a large 17.3 inch laptop it does not seem too burdensome. - I really like the color lighting flare the Alienware laptop has as well. Just some really nice high end effects. They play into the great keyboard which I have found fast and responsive. - This thing packs a huge punch too! I mean there is a lot under the hood between the AMD processor, 1TB solid state drive, WiFi 6, NVIDIA GeForce graphics card, and 16 GB ram! You can really feel the power is this laptop as it easily handles any application or game I have through at it so far. - The screen is gorgeous! It supports Dolby Vision HDR and is up to 360 refresh rate as well. On top of that, the large 17.3” real estate screen really adds a big immersive experience. - Based on the awesome specs I listed above, this Laptop can game at a super high level! I have never had a better laptop gaming experience and this is truly a game changer. You can really push any game you are playing at the highest specs and this laptop does not have an issue with any of it! The high frame rate and the large screen bring a great gaming view and give you an edge on competition. - While playing games the laptop has an incredible cooling system that helps all the processing power of this laptop run quietly and at a great pace. - Another positive is that this laptop can have its Solid State drive and memory upgraded if wanted which is nice so that you can future proof this as well. - Lastly, I love the port placement as well. It’s nice to have connections on the back side which is nice so the wires are out of the way. CONS: - Understandably, the charging brick is quite large and just adds another large item to bring with you if you want it to be portable. - I also with the screen was 4K, but HDR Dolby Vision is a great start. BOTTOM LINE: - This is one of the best gaming laptops you can get right now! The screen, refresh rate, and processing specs all push this laptop want over the top. It handles games at a very high level and is upgradable to ensure you can enjoy this laptop for many many years! I think this laptop is a great buy for serious gamers out there who need the best they can.

The Alienware m17 R5 17.3” FHD Gaming Laptop is a huge upgrade over my previous laptop. This Alienware laptop is fast with tons of memory, well built, and double the storage of the laptop that it has replaced. For the price point it offers tons of features and great build quality. Upon booting the m17 R5 for the first time I could tell it was going to be something special. It took me a little while to go through the setup process, but it was straight forward. I had no problems at all with process. With 16gb of system memory and the AMD Ryzen 9 6900HX processor there isn’t a lack of computing power. Moving between programs is seamless. I was able to use multiple forms of media at the same time to create an interactive PowerPoint for a work project and never had any lag. Watching a show on streaming media or playing an interactive video game flows very well and the viewing screen is second to none. Having the ability to use this laptop in this manner is due to it having the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Ti graphics card. What makes the build quality so great is due a few reasons. Utilizing a 17.3” screen with 1080p HD resolution with great back lighting, viewing media on the screen is easy on the eyes. Keeping it cool to the touch is Alienware’s cryo-tech cooling technology. Unlike my previous laptop I’m able to work with the m17 on my lap for hours. The sound quality is quite nice. With dolby atmos surround sound enabled, makes for a great soundstage for any media type to include listening to music. The keyboard is well laid out and has great lighting. The shell feels sturdy to the touch and I do not worry at all when traveling with this laptop. I enjoy video recording family vacations, my word working builds, and when I go off-road riding. Anyone who video log their lives will know that videos take up a lot of storage space and on my last laptop I had a 500gb hard drive that I filled up really quickly. The Alienware m15 R5 came loaded with a 1TB M.2 PCIe NVMe solid state drive. This drive make uploading and downloading data extremely fast and with the extra storage I can work on my videos without a worry about the lack of storage. All in all I thoroughly enjoy this laptop and I know for years to come that this is going to be an asset to me in both work and play. I recommend this laptop, it will do whatever you need and more.
