Everything you need in a portable gaming laptop

The intent behind the X series of Alienware laptops is to create a more portable machine. I’ve had prior iterations of both the M15 and M17 laptops, and they were big, bulky machines, albeit with plenty of processing power and cooling capabilities. The X14 is definitely a thinner and lighter than the M15 that I had previously, but that does come with some caveats. Of course, the screen is 1” smaller, but also, due to the smaller, thinner frame, the X14 does not have the kind of efficient cooling that the M15 or M17 does, which results in a decrease in processing power output. Some may struggle with the 14” screen for gaming. I know for me, it did take a little while to get used to. But if you are someone who likes to take their gaming laptop on the run, the X14 is a great option for portability. The X14 has the Alder Lake i7 processor in it, as well as a Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 video processor, which makes for an extremely seamless use experience. Games, apps, and web pages are loaded quickly, and the laptop provides an all-around snappy performance. In the Balanced cooling preset, the keyboard gets uncomfortable hot in normal use situations, so I had to select the Cool preset, which does run the fans a bit more but not so much that you can’t hear yourself think. Like I said, however, since the cooling seems to be a little less efficient with this slimmer laptop, processor power is slightly downgraded. In normal use, this isn’t an issue. When we get into higher frame rate games, I can tell a difference between this laptop and the older M17 that I also have. The X14 is Full HD, with a beautiful, vibrant screen. It also has a 144 Hz refresh rate, which really helps smooth out gameplay. It would have been nice to have a 4K display, but I’m sure size limitations in the laptop led to just keeping things at 1080p. Another plus, for me, is the inclusion of Dolby Vision. There is a ton of Dolby Vision content on Vudu, Disney Plus, and Netflix, so I love the fact that I can watch those titles in their native processing on the X14. I love a gaming laptop that is also capable of being used for everything else. I do a lot of typing on my laptops, so I put the X14 through its paces. I know its a gaming machine, but I need it to do more. My typing experience on the X14 was kind of a Meh… I can’t pick out any one thing I don’t like about the keyboard, its just not really comfortable to type on. Kind of compact, key travel seems too little, the space bar is not very long and kind of narrow, okay maybe I found a few things I didn’t like. Like I said, its a gaming laptop, but for the price paid, it would be nice to have a better typing experience. I love the touchpad. Tracks extremely well and has good reactions. Plenty of inputs and outputs on the X14. Three USB C ports, an old school USB A port, HDMI, and surprisingly enough a micro SD card slot. Unfortunately, they are all located on the back, and accessing them when the screen is open can be a pain. The model I have also comes with a 512 GB SS hard drive and 16 GB of RAM. In use, less-demanding games ran without an issue on the X14. We use Steam a lot for our laptop and have a handful of simulation games and a personal favorite, Rocksmith. With the laptop open and an HDMI cable connected to our surround receiver, we enjoyed a smooth, error-free gaming experience. With a bass and guitar connected to the USB ports, Rocksmith songs streamed without any chop, hesitation, or stutter. Napoleon Total War, which is pretty memory intensive, got the laptop pretty warm and kicked the fans into high gear a couple of times, but we couldn’t complain about the smooth gameplay and transitions. We only ran into problems when we played something like Assassin’s Creed Origins, run at Medium, was the best the X14 could do. We tried running at a higher preset, and gameplay was unbearably choppy. Stepping down a bit to Halo Infinite, and running at 1080/60FPS was absolutely fantastic. The X14 barely broke a sweat. Same with God of War, the reboot for the PC. At 1080/60FPS, we had absolutely no issue kicking butt and taking names with Kratos. Final Fantasy XV showed some weaknesses, we tried running the game at 1080P and 60 FPS, but had several spots where transitions and action-type events stuttered. Running it at 30 FPS resulted in a less-than-ideal experience. I have enjoyed my experience with the X14 thus far. It is a powerful, smooth running laptop with a great processor, video card, and battery. It has plenty of inputs and outputs, a vibrant, bright screen, and will suit most gamers who desire portability in a gaming laptop.

I was intrigued when I found out Alienware was making a 14" gaming laptop. I know most people like a 15" or 17" laptops for gaming (and they still have those) but I've always wanted a non-bulky gaming laptop I can easily take with me on the go. Lets get the basic specs out of the way. 14" 1080p display Intel 12th gen i7 CPU 16gb of RAM NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 512gb SSD drive The first thing you notice is the interesting design and how slim it is. The screen is hinged on top towards the back and ALL external ports are in the rear of this laptop. The clean white finish with the number 14 and the RBG alien is a great finishing touch. Its loaded with Windows 11 Home edition. It comes with some Alienware software that allows you to change the themes which includes the colors of the keyboard, change performance modes, overclock, and monitor performance. You can also use it to download software and driver updates. The screen is a 1080p non-touch display that has a 144Hz refresh rate. It gets pretty bright too. Brighter than most of my laptops. Its not 4k but full HD which is fine for a 14" display. The keyboard is customizable RGB. The function buttons are a little different than most laptops as they moved the volume to the right side of the keyboard and replaced some of them with different functionality. Charges via a Dell USB-C 130 watt AC power supply. Sound quality is ok for a laptop. Says it supports Dolby Atmos as well but I'm assuming via a external speaker or headphones. The front facing camera supports Windows Hello for unlocking which is a plus. The wireless adapter supports Wifi 6. Performance-wise I was impressed. Everything loads and responds quickly as you would expect with a latest gen i7. I noticed no lag at all. It wakes almost instantly after opening the lid and is ready to go. As for gaming I was able to play all my favorite games. The RTX 3060 as expected had no issues with anything I threw at it from my game collection. I did notice that it gets pretty warm and the fans need to kick up a notch to help with thermals. But it really depends on what games you are playing and how hard you push it. For example Fall Guys wasn't bad but as soon as I loaded up CyberPunk 2077 it kicked up a notch. Just keep an eye on space because after you start installing a bunch of games that 512gb SSD fills up pretty quickly with the size PC games are these days. As for any cons I would like to see a bigger touch pad and better thermals to reduce fan noise. Overall this is a fantastic gaming laptop! Its become my new full time gaming pc. If your looking for a super portable true gaming laptop you can take with you anywhere, this is it!

Is a Grey Alien LED worth the money?

I've wanted an Alienware computer ever since i was a kid but could never afford one. Recently I was in the market for a thin and light laptop that packed some power if I decided to do some casual gaming, work, or really anything I wanted to throw at it. After visiting the store my eyes betrayed me and wandered toward the forbidden fruit know as Alienware - which I've grown to accept from a child as a luxury beyond my stars. However, the A14 at only a G was surprisingly within my budget range and boy is it worth it. The quality is undeniable - it's a beautiful machine and the tuned performance is unparallel to any brand out there. It's lightweight, thin, sleek and runs every game i throw at it at max settings. Battery life is surprisingly decent considering how light and thin it is given its power - last i checked humans haven't had a revolutionary breakthrough in battery cell technology in the last decade or more so my expectations for this feature was low and the battery life went above and beyond that even. Look... Everytime i take this out of my bag in public, it turns heads. I feel confident talking to women again, and recently won a Texas holdem no limit poker tournament in my local town. Lately, I've been killing my zoom meetings, and closed every client I've met with the last two months and my work has me in the running for a new promotion. So is this a five star laptop? Is Alienware worth the hype? The answer is an astounding, "Yes".

Slim, fast, and trouble free. How many times can you say that about a gaming laptop? I bought this as an open box and have been pleasantly surprised. Laptop is quick, quiet and stylish without being garish. Games both through Steam and on the PC are quick, tue laptop doesnt get too hot, and ive found no major glitches. Yep, a good bit of kit.

The Dell Alienware x14 R1 is promoted as the world’s thinnest gaming laptop and I have to say, it’s the thinnest one I have come across. With powerful specs and interestingly stylish design, I have enjoyed every second with the x14 thus far. Windows 11 setup, is very simple and allows you to migrate an account if you have it setup up correctly on the other computer/laptop. Because this was the case, I was up and running within 15 minutes. Screen: The 14” screen can be a little small for some in terms of gaming but this is a tradeoff if you would like extra portability. The screen itself is 1080p with 144hz refresh rate and Dolby Vision with select content. The colors are very good and brightness is awesome. I am not nitpicky in terms of color accuracy but it seems very vibrant and blacks are very rich. It gets plenty bright for just about every environment and the fast refresh rate makes gaming pleasurable. There are options to keep the fresh rate at 60hz, 80hz, 144hz, and a variable setting to alternate between 80-144hz. I found the variable setting great for everyday use as thing should help with battery life but the fastest setting is a no brainer for gaming. Build Quality: One aspect of this laptop is the unique design with the ports located at the rear along with most venting for the fans. Outside of this, the laptop feels very sturdy and like a quality piece of machinery. The “Lunar Light” color looks fantastic along with the black/dark gray inside. Of course the Alien logo on the back is illuminated so that adds a little character. The keyboard feels on par with most laptops these days. Key travel is good but it won’t compare to the mechanical gaming keyboards. The trackpad is very smooth and overall is decent in size but on the smaller side of things. This laptop does include a webcam but the 720P 30FPS resolution is decent in only the best lighting. Ports (Rear): - 1 USB-C Charging (130w charger included) - 1 Headphone Jack - 1 HDMI 2.1 - 1 USB-A 3.2 Gen 1 - 1 Micro SD Slot (Sweet!) - 2 USB-C Thunderbolt 4, USB4®, 15W (3A/5V) Power Delivery, and DisplayPort 1.4 Gaming: The overall performance of this laptop with the 12th Gen (i7-12700H - 24 MB cache, 14 cores, 20 threads, 4.70 GHz Turbo) processor, DDR5 memory at 5200MHz, and RTX 3060 with 6GB of GDDR6 memory makes this thing a powerhouse for its size. I typically do most gaming on my laptops via Xbox (occasionally steam downloads) and nothing really bottlenecked this laptop. Halo games along with Forza Horizon 5 didn’t overly task the system and gaming held 1080p, 60fps without much issue. Granted the games I play are not maxing out the GPU at most times, they still put a good load on them but I had no issues with gaming for several hours. The temps were warm to hot but everything stayed within reason. The keyboard does get noticeably warm over time. The 144hz display made everything buttery smooth and like mentioned earlier the colors are really good. Of course you should be able to power an external 4k display if you choose with this laptop via HDMI or DisplayPort. Likes: - 12th Gen i7-12700H CPU, RTX 3060 6GB - Screen (Good Colors, 144hz refresh rate) - Trackpad Feel - Case design/color/quality - DDR5, 5200mhz Memory - Wi-Fi 6E Capability - Fans quiet during normal use - Micro SD Card Slot (Awesome!) - HDMI 2.1, DP 1.4 Dislikes: - Rear facing ports hard to access in some cases - 720p webcam Overall, I have really enjoyed using the Dell Alienware x14 R1 for gaming and daily use. I can’t wait to test out video editing once I have some footage but based on what I have experienced so far; it should handle it with ease. I would highly recommend checking out the x14 R1 in this spec if you are in need of a new upper range, slim, gaming laptop with great performance and fairly portable design. As long as you can deal with the 14” screen, it’s one of the best all-around laptops I have used.

    The UFO of gaming laptops!

Great laptop for starters! Design and feel are out-of-this-world. And the engineering that went into just the base model 14” can’t be matched! Now, when it comes down to gaming I was hard-pressed to find ANY GAME that would drop below 50fps at MAX settings. With that being said, it does get loud when under load and it does get HOT but only where it matters. This isn’t a LAPtop you want in your lap as the thermal exhausts do get very hot, and the only thing you can upgrade in this model is the NVMe SSD, but again with it being thinner than an upright dime at just over a 1/2in. thick it IS the worlds thinnest gaming laptop! Pros- -Thin and Lightweight -Handles the most demanding titles easily -RGB backlit Keyboard (RGB and Macros customizable) -Face ID -USB-C chargeable Cons- -Fans at full speed make me swear it’s going to fly! (Wife calls it The UFO) - No Individual RGB key color.

With a i7 12000H CPU and and RTX3060 GPU, this small laptop offers great performance. Although the screen is only 1920x1080, it is an excellent match for this size laptop and is very clear. The SSD is blazingly fast with speeds above 6000. The battery will last all day for surfing and normal activities such as writing, etc. as long as you set the mode to Quiet in the Alinware Command Center. Battery life when playing games in minimal like most laptops and is not recommended. Great expandability with 2 Thunderbolt 4 ports. Charges through usb.

Perfect blend of performance, size, and convenience. If you’re looking for the performance of a larger 15 inch laptop, this is not for you. Dell was able to pack a lot of performance in a small package and still be charged via USB-C, which makes it for probably the lightest gaming laptop out there. Pros: - Compact, lightweight, sturdy feel - Sufficient power for 1080p gaming - Powered by USB-C, so smaller power brick (or just use a GaN charger) Cons: - 75w (boosted) 3060 - don’t expect this to drive a 4k (and even a 1440p) at 120 fps in ultra high definition. There are other laptops for this - Fans can get a up on the “these are loud” side of the spectrum. - Trackpad tracks great, but can feel cramped for people with larger hands or use 3-4 finger gestures.

Design: Pros - Very thin and light for a gaming laptop - Beautiful and clean design - Full RGB capable keyboard - Luna White is very nice on the top - Plenty of I/O ports and all in the back, out of the way - 1080P 144hz display is very color accurate, responsive, and looks fantastic at 14" - Very responsive touchpad - Front Facing Camera is very responsive to Windows Hello and looks good during calls - Very nice rubber texture on the body of the keyboard side which is nice on the wrists - Keyboard is responsive and perfectly fine to play games on Cons: - Some may find the 14" screen too small for some games - while 1080P looks fantastic on this model, some may wish for 4k, though performance on the 3060 would have suffered, so I am in support of the 1080p resolution here - Fans can be loud at times - Needs the use of an external mouse to play most games properly. Recommend turning off the touch pad when external mouse is in use while using the keyboard for gaming Performance Pros: - This laptop runs surprisingly cool. Under full game load, the CPU reached a mac of 85 degrees on only some of the cores. Overall thermals in this laptop are incredible, aiding in top CPU and GPU performance (pictures of screen shots attached) - The 144hz Gsync display was very responsive when playing FPS games - 3D Mark 7833 - Unigen Heaven FPS 192.5 - GS:GO 400 FPS with max settings - Fortnite 16- FPS with high settings - Call of Duty Cold War 120 FPS with high settings Cons - The fans can get loud, though not annoying. The use of headphones with noise cancellation completely eliminates this - Battery life is nearly useless when playing games. Lasted 45 minutes under full load - Cannot adequately play AAA VR titles, like Half Life Alyx well, many settings need to be set lower than desired Bottom Line This is hands down the best gaming laptop I've used to date. The Cooling system alone is absolutely amazing. The rest of the laptop is extremely well built, feels premium, clean, and not distracting. It looks like a gaming laptop without being too flashy. I love the 14" size and the performance this lower level RTX 3060 provides is impressive at 1080P. It is more than capable of playing any game at a good performance level. I absolutely recommend this laptop to anyone searching for both a phenomenal laptop in general that plans to play games at an impressive level.

The laptop performs well even with the most current games. However the fan gets a little loud at times under high workload. Additionally be prepared to upgrade the storage as 512GB is just not enough for todays applications and games. The display isn’t bad and supports a decent color gamut and contrast. Finally, be aware that some of the output ports are connected to the iGPU from Intel vs The dGPU from NVidia. Hence there are cases when I can’t use the NVidia control panel to control the output resolution/timing. This is important if you have a wide aspect ratio panel and want certain scaled display outputs so that apps can recognize the custom resolution.

Overall I really like the design and build of this laptop. While it’s a bit bigger than a normal 14 inch the quality and performance is great. The overall weight is also perfect in my opinion. The fans do run noisy though; that’s just the result of being so thin. Additionally the touchpad is a bit small but it’s a a high quality touchpad so I don’t mind it. One big miss is that its 1080p as max resolution. While the screen has a nice color calibration and the refresh rate is great it would have been nice to have at least a 1440 option.

was torn between asuas rogs or alienware laptops, glad i went with alienware, feels and looks like premium product and its blazes through everything i throw at it, unless your editing intenseive 8k video the i7 is enough power along with the 3060 nivida card. No need to be running games at 4k since its a 1080p display but with a wide color gamut and dobly hdr depending on the software i wont complain. Only downside this could have is the 512 ssd is not enough at least its upgradable

Managed to get an open box example for less than $700. Really a no-brainer at that price. Display quality is a pleasant surprise, as are the RTX 3060 benchmarks and gaming performance considering the low TGP of the card. Battery life under general use (i.e not gaming) is enough for most use cases, bolstered by the convenience of USB-C charging. Build quality is very good and the chassis is very solid. I like the keyboard (especially the soft wrist guard material). Overall very pleased with this purchase, especially at the price I paid.

This is a great machine as long as you remove most of the Dell and Alienware applications. I used this machine for a year stock and when I uninstalled them I gained a huge performance boost. The only other complaint I have is the jet engine inside of it. Thankfully I game with headsets and don't hear it.
