Customers consistently note the excellent performance and stunning 4K display of the x17 R2 laptop, making it ideal for gaming and demanding applications. However, some users experienced issues with the keyboard's reliability and reported shorter than expected battery life. Concerns were also raised regarding the system's heat generation and the relatively high price point.

An excellent Alienware!

This is a very expensive, but very powerful gaming laptop. As it is an Alienware the build quality is top notch. There is absolutely zero creaking or flexing. It is built very, very well.
In terms of the actual use experience the X17 has some caveats though. The first is that the trackpad is unusually small (by today's standards) for such a large 17.3" laptop. The keyboard is excellent even if it's not the Cherry MX mechanical one. The typing has a satisfying depth and good feedback. The only issue here is that secondary functions on the function key row aren't backlight, which can make it hard in dim environment to find certain controls like brightness.
The screen at 4K is super sharp with excellent color reproduction and brightness. Watching content, playing games or even reading articles from the web is nothing short of delightful. My unit had some backlight bleed, but it wasn't really noticeable at all during normal use. The camera while not 1080p is serviceable and Windows Hello works very well.
I really enjoy the Legend design language and styling that Alienware employs with the X series. The X17 is without a doubt the flagship model and the contrast between the Lunar Light and dark interior is stunning. Especially when you turn on all that RGB! The ring on the back is incredibly bright and it makes the laptop look like a spaceship when you see it from the rear.
On to the negatives. While the laptop is a top performer you will find that you have to do some tweaking to the power profiles using tools like Throttlestop or XTU. Dell likes to let their CPUs fly and you will notice that the i9 in this will readily and happily crank up all the way to top boost speeds until it hits 100 celsius. The GPU always stays cool, but sometimes it's a game to keep the CPU in check (if you care about that at all).
The cooling system is very good and does a great job in such a thin chassis. The fans tend to sound on the whiny/whistlely side so it's a good idea to play with headphones on if that bothers you. The speakers are pretty good by gaming laptop standards but cannot compete with the likes of the Asus Scar series or the bigger Razer laptops. I recommend you play with the X17 on an elevated stand or with the back propped up so that air can get in underneath it more effectively.
The power adapter is a good size considering that it packs high wattages and is slim enough to slip into bags. On the issue of size though the X17 has a very big footprint. It's bigger than most of the other current gen 17.3" gaming laptops due to the extended rear end that is part of the cooling system. Because of this and the premium metal chassis the X17 is a little heavier compared to say an Asus Scar 17 or even an MSI GE77/78. All this means that it might not fit your current backpack! I had to end up getting an Alienware Horizon Travel backpack (which are of fantastic quality and design) in order to be able to transport this baby.
Overall, the Alienware X17 R2 is a beautiful, well made gaming laptop. It offers really good performance, a lovely screen, good expandability, but at the same time it is a bit big and the fans can get a little annoying due to their tendency to whistle. Nonetheless, it is a good buy especially if you can get it on sale. The RTX 3080 that it packs is still powerful and a good GPU.

Would be 5 stars if I didnt need to send my computer into Best Buy totaltech to replace my motherboard and gpu. I purchased my open box for a discounted price. It was just the inconvenience for not being able to use the laptop for another 2 weeks as it got fixed. Bedt buy totaltech wasbreally worth it and was very helpful to get the computer fixed with no extra costs. The computer was awsome as well. Only thing i disliked about it was its battery life off charger.

This is a treu laptop replacement, meaning if this machine is meant to stay in one area a majority of the time, awesomesauce if you plan on traveling alot, this isnt the machine for you. BUT it is a very well constructed beast, beautiful 4k screen, great keyboard, decent speakers, and built like a tank on steriods. With the 4000 card series out maybe you should look at those BUT you cant go wront with a RTX 3080, enjoy this monster.

This laptop is amazing. I have a rtx 3080 with 12700k desktop and at 2k resolution it looks just as good. Frame rate at 2k with full settings on call of duty is about 116 constant fps...4k is more like 85fps. Visually stunning. But dropped a star because battery life is brutal. About an hour browsing internet without any battery saver on. Maybe 2-3 with battery saver on.

As a power user I have to admit that this is the most powerful computer I have ever owned. I am running a six monitor configuration and the graphics performance is butter smooth. With this laptop I have achieved my goal of replacing my desktop computer with something more powerful and it is indeed an upgrade. Props to the Alienware design team for such a sleek, rugged and fuctional design. I LOVE having all the ports in the BACK of the laptop as opposed to the sides. There are some minor drawbacks... I already scratched the cover by accident and am really bummed about that. The speakers are really poor sounding but I don't use them very often. The laptop can get super hot and this became an issue for a call to customer support help line. The laptop had performed a firmware update via its own update software. Following that update, the laptop back became extremely hot well over 100 degrees and the cooling fans refused to turn on. Customer support was great at helping me get this fixed by getting me booted into bios to restore the default performance settings and then running another firmware update. That fix solved the overheating with no fan issue, kudos to customer support! I am a happy customer!

They say the third time is the charm and in this case it definitely was. Not a single complaint except that you do have to keep this thing plugged into a power source basically at all times; the battery life is quite poor to say the least even out of the box. Great for advanced tasks like gaming on high res with high frame rates, editing music and movies and countless other tasks.

Very Fast for games; however, apps and software are slow to load; and some clicks take a few moments to register as action in windows 11 menus. This appears to be a Windows 11 problem.

Great Gaming Laptop, graphics at times didn’t seem to be 4K resolution even at max settings and 4K display. Overheated often
